This photo, from the camera of my brother, Mr. DOT, was taken at Deas Dock, circa 1997. It has been seen here before, on the Q-Wack thead. D.O. Thorne photo © by Wett Coast, on FlickrThe Wack was heavilly weighted at one end in order to raise the other end to allow RAD maintenance. The V class in behind is very likely the Victoria. Note the blue tarps covering the upper car deck windows. In behind that, I see a tall pointy mast belonging to the Queen of Prince Rupert.

I might be popping down to Deas this week sometime to say hello to whichever ships are hiding out there right now... do we have any idea what's there? I know the Nicola was put back into the water, but has she left, or is she still sitting there?
SiiTech shows the Queen of Chilliwack and the Bowen Queen... if that's all we've got, I'll probably pass on going. Is there anything going to be showing up within the week?
I'm not gonna go if there isn't much worth seeing there.

The NoRad will probably be there by some time on Monday or Tuesday, though they might store it elsewhere (Departure Bay?) for awhile.

The NoRad will probably be there by some time on Monday or Tuesday, though they might store it elsewhere (Departure Bay?) for awhile. She's sailing towards Port Hardy at 19 knots right now, around 7 NM from Bear Cove. I'd guess she'll be in the southern reaches of the Georgia Strait by tomorrow evening if she leaves Port Hardy quickly. If there's going to be any time spent for destoring or whatnot, her arrival would wait 'til tuesday. >> Since she's heading south, would they destore her at Port Hardy, or at her final destination?

Tonight I dropped by Deas. The fact that I forgot my tripod, and that I haven't managed to convert the girlfriend to ferryanity yet sort of limited my time to get pictures, but here's what's worth showing: The Bowen Queen is getting her car deck repainted; she's under tarps. And yes, that's the Chilliwack peeking out from behind the Greek. And here's the NorAd, safe and sound. On the drive home we got stuck for nearly an hour in standstill traffic. The 99 freeway was shut down due to an MVA blocking the road ahead... so I took a picture in a spot where I highly doubt many pictures ever get taken: Usually cars whizz thru there at 120, so it's more than a bit risky to stand in the middle of the road clicking the shutter, even for a risk-taker like me.

They're essentially identical pictures. Why post both? I thought they were the same at first.

I have heard many people say that the spot across the water from the berths @ Deas is tuff to access. Is that because you are trespassing someone's property or because of vegetation or another natural factor such as mud?

I believe it is impossible to access these viewpoints without trespassing on railway property or else a private company at the end of Dyke Road that is sort of a gravel transfer station. I suppose it's possible to get permission to access these places if you want to do it "legally". Of course, I think most of the nice photos you see of ferries at Deas are taken from Deas Pacific Marine property itself as they own a lot of the land "across" the slough from where the ferries dock as you can see in Google Earth.

But that land owned by Deas across the berths is not destined to be open to the public, right?

The land opposite the berths at Deas is BCF property. It is possible to get there on foot, but you are trespassing on BCF, Telus, and CN Rail property.

With help from Mr. DOT, Curtis & Nick, this photo now has a date - early 2007, before the NorAd entered service. Thanks for the assistance.
I have tentatively dated this photo as 'circa 2008'. I wonder if anyone here can help pin down the date a little closer. The NorAd joined the fleet in 2007. The Burnaby appears to be getting significant work done. Anyone who knows the approximate dates of when the Burnaby had major refits done in the years 2007 through about 2011 should have the info that will provide a reasonably accurate date for this photo.
PS - The original is a colour negative from my brother's camera. Unfortunately, the negatives are undated; I have to guestimate the date. Northern Adventure & Queen of Burnaby @ BCFs' Deas Pacific Marine - February 2007 photo © Mr. DOT by mrdot., on Flickr

The Burnaby appears to be getting deck steel replaced on her outside decks. Unless I'm mistaken, this was during her 2006-2007 upgrade during which she was coastalized. If that's the case though, the NorAd would not have began Northern Service yet as she started on March 31st, 2007. If I had to guess again, perhaps during the Burnaby's Spring 2009 Refit during which the Queen of Chilliwack relieved Route 17. I wouldn't doubt the NorAd was down for her refit as I believe the NorEx had just entered service. I can't think of any other dates that would be plausible.

Burnaby's MLU was finished in April that year I think.

A couple photos from Deas:
PS: Just a heads up that "Deas Pacific Marine" no longer exists. It's now called "Fleet Maintenance Unit".

I've finally renamed this thread, based on Ferryman's comment that BCF had changed the name of the facility.
I've kept the "Deas" word in brackets, for our own WCFF purpose.

Curious to know if anyone has swung by here lately? I'm wondering how the Chilliwack is doing. She is still sending out an AIS signal at random times...

Given that this photo is taken post-C Class, does this mean that the Langdale Queen and SC Queen are officially mothballed and retired in this photo?

Sidebar - The Landale Queen looks positively tiny in this shot. I never realized there was a such a size difference with the Suzie Q. I'd love to see a photo of her car deck...
