In the January edition of Western Mariner, maritime law expert Darren Williams analyzes the November BC Court of Appeals ruling that found BC Ferries was in the right in dismissing Colin Henthorne, master of Queen of The North the night it sank off Gil Island. In the article titled, 'Must the Captain Always Go Down with the Ship?', Williams says, "In essence, the Court confirmed that, while the captain need not physically perish with his ship, he must always take ultimate responsibility for the happenings of his ship, whether they are within his control or not." The Court found that it was not Henthorne's conduct at the time of the accident, but his attitude and compliance in assisting the inquiry afterwards that occasioned his dismissal. Worth a read, if you can pick the magazine up. I looked in the gift shops of four separate ferries, those being the Queen of Coquitlam, Burnaby, Island Sky, and Queen of Surrey, yet found no Western Mariner copies. Do they no longer stock them on the ferries?

Do they no longer stock them on the ferries? I decided to buy a 1 year subscription (did that a couple of days ago). Hopefully the January issue arrives in my mail box soon...

Yes... I just couldn't tell you exactly where and when. The Island Sky had it, not sure if she still does.

Have they ever carried the Western Mariner on any of the ships? Any crew member on a BC Ferry is a Western Mariner. So yes, plenty of western mariners are carried on the ships, each day. ....but that's not really what you wanted to know, haha.

Up until the time I mentioned it, I've found a copy of Western Mariner whenever I've looked for it in the gift shops aboard routes 1, 2, 3, 30, and 10 (assuming that route 10 is the inside passage route, which I think it is).

I guess i've just never noticed it in the past years... I've been on the Surrey a few times recently, and they don't carry the Western Mariner anymore. Also I checked on the I Sky 3 weeks ago and they didn't have the magazine.

Western Mariner magazine has been something that has slowly been filtered out of the gift shops for some reason. When I commuted on the Ferries (Route 2) in 2009, I noticed I could find the magazine in the Gift shop on the Oak Bay, but not the Renaissance/Cowichan. Now you can't find it in either. I was onboard the SOVI almost a week ago, and it was nowhere to be found either. Queen of Nanaimo doesn't have it either.
However, there should already be a Western Mariner thread around here somewhere....

A new thread for our comments about this BC marine magazine, and the various stories and other interesting things that we find in it.

I received the January 2012 issue today, first in my subscription.

February's Western Mariner doesn't carry any feature articles on ferries, but there is a summary of the work done on Klitsa and Quadra Queen, as well as a piece on the recent purchase of Black Ball by employees. It also has an article on the problem of derelict boats on our shoreline.
The best reading on the local maritime scene this month is in the current BCAA magazine Westworld, which has an enjoyable lengthy look at a cruise on Marine Link's passenger-freighter Aurora Explorer. The featured trip went from Menzies Bay near Campbell River up to the head of Bute Inlet, and all the way south to a landing on the sands of Savary Island. Sounds like a wonderful way to spend four days, although rather expensive for such a spartan craft.

The short mention of the Quadra Queen II's refit included a comment on how her service-speed was increased as a result of changes from the refit. I think it was regarding the paint and bow-bulb. - I'll check my article later.

My March2012 issue of Western Mariner has arrived; it is prompt at the start of each month. I've just browsed it so far, but it includes a feature story of the ever changing Victoria BC harbour, including Blue-bridge, CP Terminal. This also includes photos and story of a Spirit-class BCFerry using the Esquimalt Graving Dock. ----------------- On a different note, I've emailed the editor to mention to him that Nov.2012 is the 100th birthday of Philip Spaulding. ---------------- ps: here is the website for the various cover-pages of past & current issues of the magazine. www.westernmariner.com/cover-gallery.html

Western Mariner's August 2012 edition has a long feature on boatshops that do wooden boat work, with lots of photos of gorgeous wooden boats.
- also a short article on the workings of Tsawwassen Terminal "A Large, Efficient Transportation Hub".

The September 2012 issue of Western Mariner magazine has a half-page article on the Queen of Vancouver's final-voyage to Ensenada.
It mentioned the prep work done by Mr. Lotoski and gave a brief run down of the 4 V-Class ships.
It had a couple of photos of the typical Fanny Bay at-anchor scene, that we saw last month.

I don't know if there will be anything for the public to peruse from this, but Western Mariner mentions the Canadian Ferry Operators' 2012 conference in Victoria, this coming Monday and Tuesday. www.cfoavictoria2012.ca/

Interesting lineup of events. Everything from a tour of the Atrium, to a bus ride out to Swartz Bay for Breakfast on the Coastal Celebration. Also interesting to note that it's "Canadian Ferry Operators", and George Capacci is making an appearance on behalf of Washington State Ferries.

In my reading of the January 2014 issue of Western Mariner magazine, I read a letter-to-the-editor about the ownership & registry history of a barge in the interior. - Nothing eye-catching there, until I got to the letter writer's name: Frank A. Clapp, Victoria BC.
Good to know that Mr. Clapp is still around and still researching and writing.
He is the man who wrote the definitive reference booklet on BC Inland ferries.

May 2014 edition features a ferry bonanza for sale to the alert buyer.
Harlow Marine International is offering the ex-AMHS Chilkat, the Albion ferries Klatawa and Kulleet, the ex- Albert J. Savoie, and a smart looking 50', 50 passenger vessel selling for a mere fifty grand. The four car ferries don't have price tags attached, but given prior figures, I think the whole lot could be had for a million bucks.
I call on Mr Hammersmark to quit hiding behind this dodge of the humble bus driver, and to loosen the purse strings on that fortune he's made off banner ads, membership fees, and his shameful underpayment of long suffering moderators. Let's vote on which of these vessels we want, and become the only ferry forum in the world that isn't dependent on someone else's schedule for when they take a fan trip.

Just waiting for the QUEEN OF NANAIMO to go up for sale, Neil. Then we can play a "Symphony in E-major" anywhere we want, whenever we want...

Just waiting for the QUEEN OF NANAIMO to go up for sale, Neil. Then we can play a "Symphony in E-major" anywhere we want, whenever we want... The Queen of Tsawwassen is what we should have grabbed. We could have just swapped the horns. Right now, though, the Chilkat is about our size, and we could still just swap the horns. The E-major horn on such a small ship would probably push it backwards. Just too bad she isn't a Spaulding design, but she looks close.
