Does anyone have a recommended hotel/motel in Anacortes, for staying the night-before the next morning's International sailing?
Just a simple & safe overnight stay, relatively close to the ferries.
Thanks for any advice.
(and thanks to WCK for the inspiration of an alternative way to end my vacation).
The above quote from Mr. Horn originates from the 'Accommodation Enquiries & Advice' thread. It got me thinking about taking the Alternate (and/or Scenic) Route. As some might know, I am a big fan of seeking out and then doing such. Two or three times yearly I travel between the mainland and Vancouver Island and on perhaps one crossing out of three I will opt for something other than Route 1, Route 2 or even Route 10. I have done the following alternates over the past ten years:
- Many trips on 'Route 1A' Tsawwassen to/from Swartz Bay via one or more of the SGI's.
- Victoria to Vancouver via Comox & Powell River & three ferry crossings
- Victoria to Vancouver via WSF's Sidney/Anacortes route (just last week) including a call into San Juan Island's Friday Harbor.
- Vancouver Island 'home' to Kitimat via 'The Discovery Coast Passage' route aboard The Wack from Port Hardy to Bella Coola. This became a 'choice' following the loss of the QotN.
Another possibility for me at some future date is to go from Victoria to Vancouver via the Coho route to Port Angeles, and WSF's Port Townsend to Whidbey Island crossing.
Another long distance 'alternate route' that I really really want to do perhaps next spring is to travel from my home up here (Kitimat) to Vancouver Island by finding my way to Ketchikan Alaska and then going south to Bellingham, WA, aboard the the AMHS's flagship, the Columbia. I would consider doing this in either direction, and this could potentially be something for Voyagers to think about.
I would like to encourage others to contribute to this thread by telling us about 'alternate routes' that you have taken, or might take some day. This need not be restricted to crossings between Vancouver Island and the mainland of BC or Washington, but anywhere on the North American north-west coast. Being that this is the West Coast Ferries Forum, your alternate route has to include at least one ferry crossing.
