Part of a 'MLU' includes a total stripping of paint off the superstructure, any damaged plating is repaired or replaced then a coat of new rust protection 'paint' is applied. When all outer upper-works areas are 'MLU-complete', the entire superstructure will get a fresh coat of BC Ferries white/blue marine paint. (While the S.O.B.C. is out of the water her entire hull will get a sand-blasting and any repairs needed will be done then repainted with anti-rust protection and I guess black or dark blue hull paint) 'Hands-up, those that would like to go back to the pastel blue, and dogwood logo on the funnels'? Ooh! Me!!

Do you think the visors will be removed permanently or is it just for the refit?

The visors are there I believe? The bow doors are off - surely just for the refit.
Edit - sorry I see what you're saying, the visors at the stern... hopefully they'll be back!

Are there going to be that many visual changes to her? I mean besides a fresh coat of paint?

I have heard from what I consider to be a reliable source that work on the SoBC is progressing well and she will be headed back to our waters perhaps by early May, and possibly by early April. That is good news in that operating crews will have time to get all 'fammed up' well before the busy days of summer.
Good speed to the SoBC ...

Spirit of BC Return to Service Date:
According to RBI at BC ferries website The Spirit of BC is expected (SUBJECT to CHANGE) to return to Full service Based out of Tsawwassen on May 16 on her regular service. A few Days later on May 18 Route 1 sailings will be Temporary back to Normal for the Summer before the Spirit of VI leaves for her Mid-Life in Poland.
Just before the Spirit of BC Returns Coastal Renaissance will be opperating out of Tsawwassen replacing the Celebration. So when the Coastal Celebration goes for her refit, Renaissance will replace her and remain as the Tsawwassen based vessel untill the Spirit returns. Renaissance scheduled to replace Celebration effective April 4, and the Inspiration will be #2 at Swartz Bay with the Coquitlam out of Duke Point. Queen of Coquitlam will be on the Duke point to Tsawwassen run replacing the Inspiration from April 4 untill May 16.

BC Ferries RBI for April 4, May 15, May 16 and May 18 2018 SUBJECT TO CHANGE!
www.bcferries.com/bcferries/faces/reservation/booking.jsp?pcode=GUEST
The RBI For the May long weekend have not been made public yet for rt 2, But I would assume the Renaissance will be either on Rt 2 or replacing the Inspiration durring that time. Coquitlam would do extra weekend salings on rt 2.

What I don’t understand is since the Queen of New Westminster is currently tied up at Tsawassen Berth 1 and isn’t scheduled to operate again until March 16th why not use her as the #3 boat right now, have the Spirit of Vancouver Island operate normally and have the Renaissance replace the Inspiration or Celebration right now

Why not ask them, and get back to us if they reply?

Coastal Celebration and Inspiration NORMALLY do not go for thier refitts untill Mid-Late Spring. Now According to the RBI the Spirit of BC is schedualed to return May 16, in service. Therefore Coastal Inspiration will be replaced by the Renaissance like normal.

The Spirit of British Columbia makes a brief appearance in this drone footage around the 1:45 mark. However I recommend watching it all the way through since the footage is neat to watch with the choice if music for the video itself. SOBC can be seen in several scenes but in the background.

Nice look at the new bulbous bow, didn't see anything else that stuck out to me as new immediately. Thanks for sharing!

I think the biggest change we’ll see on the outside will be the change of evacuation systems. She should be receiving an LSA slide systems much like the Coastals, Salish, and a number of other vessels have. This also means that all of the overhead deck cradles full of life rafts on deck 5 will be eliminated. Looks to me like the same/original whistle is still on the mast

Wow that is a huge shipyard! Great video of what a busy big shipyard looks like. That's where the big boys go to play. To say nothing of the other assorted vessels besides ferries that are in the yard.

I had a similar "Wow, this is how the big players get it done" reaction to the video. And I saw the size comparison of our little Spirit to the big ferries. Of course the overnight ferry is a staple of Europe, whether it be to/from Ireland, cross channel, or Baltic. And Gdansk is right in the middle of that big market action. Europe, and specifically Gdansk, are a different market, a different type of ship and a different type of shipyard from what we know and experience on the Canadian west coast.

Your point is well taken 'Mike' of the vast operational differences between our wee market as compared to the European behemoths. Just to add a point of interest, if one is seeking a 'ride' to Sardinia, Corsica, Elba, Ibiza, Malta, Valencia or Sicily, the Italian company, Moby Lines with their 'mural-decorated' vessels are at your service. (And we thought the murals on the 'Coastals' were too much)
