So I found some more pics in my "archives"...
These 2 taken on Sept 24, 1987 when the Queen of Coquitlam was being used briefly on Rte 1. I can't remember the circumstances that caused her to be used on that route...I think it was something to do with one ship being in refit and another one breaking down unexpectedly. Whatever the reason, it was enough of a novelty for me to make a special trip.
The interior, after the orange upholstery was replaced, but before the bergundy and teal made an appearance:Actually, it looks like there's still some orange seating up ahead in the number 1 end lounge.
Entering Active Pass. The front of the upper car deck is visible, the only photographic evidence I personally have to show there was a time a C-class was used on rte 1:

I found another little album! Back on Friday July 29, 1988 I decided to devote an entire day to riding on all 5 C-Class ships. That season, the ship assignments were as follows: #1 DB-Queen of Surrey #2 DB-Queen of Alberni #1 HSB-Queen of Oak Bay (some things never change ;D) #2 HSB-Queen of Coquitlam #1 Langdale-Queen of Cowichan ====== First a couple pics taken the previous day...I had trekked to Giovando Lookout on Newcastle Island to take a couple shots...one of the Coquitlam: Then the next day, the ferry riding began! 2:00PM sailing from DB to HSB: Queen of Coquitlam arriving at HSB at 7:35PM for her 8:00PM sailing to DB:

Woah! I just realized how cool this photo is! You can see what to me looks to be the Surrey or Oak Bay, still not fully painted, in behind. Awesome!

That was the Queen of Surrey in the background, not too long after she was launched. She was rafted along the otherside of the pier, and towed away from there (as you can see) in a real hurry, after fears of the Coquitlam toppling over on to her.

I have a photo from like 25000 feet of the Coquitlam at Langdale and the Surrey arriving from Dec 4th as I was on a WestJet flight out of Victoria to Edmonton via Kelowna and we flew over Howe Sound on a clear day. I cant really post it on the forum though as my photobucket account is full and I cant afford to upgrade at the moment! It is on my Facebook photos though from that trip!

Quickest and cheapest solution, Karl: Just register a new free email account somewhere, and use that to set up a second Photobucket account.

FYI: The first set of photos on this thread were originally posted by Chris (Ferryman). His was too wide for the guidelines of this Forum. These are my resizings of his photos to the regulation 800 width. These photos are credited fully to Chris. The then new ferry in the background is the launched QUEEN OF SURREY II. The folks on the yard had to move her out just in case... The QUEEN OF OAK BAY was built in Esquimalt.

I found this on the internet one day, and the photos are actually credited to Jim Pilcher. I had asked him if I could post those on here and he agreed. He had also signed up as a member "Jimpilch" on here, but I don't know how often he looks on here anymore.

Yep. Textbook example of "unsafe draft" or "insufficient freeboard".

Wow! I didn't think they would run a C Class ferry there, even though it was mentioned in the reports. Thanks for sharing these photos, excapg2.
I see the Queen of Coquitlam is on its way back to Langdale. It has gone around the north side of Gambier Island, currently passing Port Mellon.

WOW! It's very strange to see the Coquitlam tied up there. Glad to see that they're actually able to fit her in the new dock now though. This makes Option B for getting to/from Squamish from Vancouver alot nicer. Would have loved to see the sighting myself, after living in that area for 6 years, and seeing only the Garibaldi II and Nimpkish use that terminal during that time.

So she was there just to test out the dock? Would a coastal class and a spirit class fit in there too, or just C-Class? And what about V/B Class? Who would have paid for fuel consumption and crewage on that trip? BCF, the government, the construction company? Must have been a double-take sight for anyone on the sea-to-sky highway, or any squamish residents nearby

Apparently, BCFS is working with the government to see the Coquitlam placed on reserve status (I would assume out of Langdale) incase there is any closure of the Sea to Sky. That way traffic can still flow, albeit between Horseshoe Bay and Darrell Bay.

I hate to say it, but I think it would be kind of cool for something to happen causing sea-to-sky drivers to need to take the ferry. It would be fun for the tourists to experience the ferries, and it would be an interesting discussion topic here on the forum. What thread would discussion on that topic go under if that were to happen?

What thread would discussion on that topic go under if that were to happen? If that were to happen, chances are it would be because of a major rockslide that might just bury a couple of cars or take out some houses- as well as choking connections to a billion dollar event, with millions watching around the world... so maybe, in your honor, we could call the topic "Luke's Cool Disaster Thread". Good grief.
