The Queen of Coquitlam layed up at Langdale yesterday. According to Rob, they're painting the underside of her eyebrow (the overhang above the wheelhouse) from green to black.

Here is another 'fresh' scan of a four year old Queen of Coquitlam under way between Nanaimo and Horseshoe Bay. The date: 15 June 1980. This view shows the ship still dressed in its original lovely coat of pastel blue. It also shows evidence of changes that had already occurred since the vessel was new in 1976 such as plated in car deck windows and the loss of the upper car deck 'arches. There is something else notable about this photo too, and I am going to leave it up to others to figure out just what I am referring to. Certain members (Fluge, Scott, Neil, Mr. DOT,...) should wait a few hours before answering. Fujichrome slide © JST - Hosted on my Flickr Photo Site.

Would the "something notable" involve the fact that she's flying international signal flags? There also doesn't appear to be any vehicles on-board, so would this mean that there's a special event being held on-board? Maybe she's carrying dignitaries or Royalty aboard, or some ceremony is taking place?

She was in regular service at the time but I guess that she was lightly loaded as there seems to be no cars visible (when you go to the hi-res version by clicking on the photo), and few people too.
You are right about the flags though. They are marking an 'occasion'.

The flags are there to mark the 20th anniversary of BC Ferries. Also, her masts are now painted black instead of white.

:)isn't it funny how the years have flown by and the ferry corp, was already 20 years old, at this date. However a Bennett was still at the helm, and would not have dreamed of re-branding this historical trim. however in expo year, a second dogwood livery was introduced. I also used brother whitecoast's fine slide to generate a new portrait of the said vessel. It hung in the office of then manager of Deas dock, but all my work of this era was scrubbed when new managment took over. :)mrdot.

As I looked at the marina at Bowen Island and saw a bunch of masts, I could also see something familiar in the background. - Queen of Coquitlam heading to Langdale. August 13, 2011.
