:)congragulations to mr. F. horn for his very illustrative selection of our NIP, and the other Wack selection, etc. I have just been reviewing some of the illustrative work I did for Case design people who did the original design work on the Island Princess conversion, and I should get wettcoast to forward you one of the extra booklets I gave him on that very interesting operation, many years ago. She looks pritty weathered nowadays, but like the Wack has given many years of good service to BC. mrdot.

Here's an archived-post item from Aug.2006 by ShipRider 16. - that's a great picture. It's the NIP arriving at Blubber Bay in great light, showing her twin hulls. ==================== i129.photobucket.com/albums/p228/c_simonetta92bcfpics/Texada%20Trip/P8261021.jpg------------------- and a series of great photos by Retro from the same August 2006 trip: From the Powell River Portion of our trip:North Island PrincessAt Blubber Bay: From Powell River:North Island Princess / Queen of Burnaby:

I have to ask for more information about her. Turning a monohull into a cat? Doubling her capacity? What's the story here? Was there money in the "repair and upgrade" budget that was not in the "new build" budget? That extensive of work, it would seem cheaper to start from scratch!

:)the year that I taught school in Duncan, I did some work for John Case, who did the design work for this project, and it was a monumental conversion, that has worked well, when you take into account that it has been well tested for all these years, and the cost was very much less than any newbuild would have been. mr.dot.

This expansion was done long, long ago. A little more than 30 years now, if I'm anywhere close to being correct. BC Ferries needed a larger ship at the time, so instead of building a new one, they decided to take the more inexpensive route and just do a total rebuild of a ship they already had (and still have to this day). So this has nothing to do with the Newbuild program.

For more on the (North) Island Princess's 1971 conversion see the very first post on page 1 of this thread. This work was done almost 40 years ago! I have also scanned 3 pages from BC Ferries' Fleet Bulletin of June 1971. This is from my brother's collection* and features some of his artwork. Artwork by D.O. :)thanks to my brother, wettcoast, for posting this part of my past life, I can't believe it was that long ago, but it underlines how we used to be able to get it done yesteryear. Thanks also for his help in changing up my signature pic. That prewar Margurete and Kathleen, were both the names of the then CPR president's wife, who was the sponser at the clydebank launchings in 1925. Not many people are alive that can remember the first Margurite, lost in the war, but some, like me can vividly remember the sinking of her sister Kathleen at Lena Pt. in 1952. mrdot.

I caught the first post on this thread, which is what has me so fascinated. We stretched our Mat, Mal and Tusty, but that did not change the essential nature of the hull. This is, well, it probably shows my ignorance, but I have never run across this sort of retrofit before... and I've SEEN her. I have pictures I took as a child, having been thoroughly fascinated (she was the first cat car ferry I had ever seen). I guess now, 20 years later, I simply have a new reason to be completely fascinated by her.
So… how does she handle compared to a design built cat? That she is still in service is obvious testament the engineering that went into the build. Is there any chance that someone has the body plan of the hull form?

I have the deck plans and the out line drawings of the NIP that were just laying around on her in the mid 80's. They are in my storage locker, but, I'm busy with my work with the Sally-Ann and other Xmas events to look for them. However, I'm free after the 27th, perhaps I can find them for you then. Sting Ray

:)for anybody that doubts the quality of BC built, as opposed to overseas or old country, as some used to say, just take a look at the deminutive little Island Princess that used to dock beside our newly built Queen of Prince Rupert in Kelsey Bay back in 66! It is still ticking just like the timex parked in this ships locker! I wonder how many of these modern marvels featured on Discovery channel will fare over the next 50 years? ???mrdot.

I think that was then and this is now.... lets see what ship is in service in 40 years from now... Island Sky or the Coastals.. Quality may have been great in the past... but not so much any more..

:)yes, sadly my friend, that was then, and we are fast loseing the ability to construct anything of added quality, and may the good lord grant you the years to check out the warenties on any of these new generation vessels! Hopefully your seniors benifets will be there in years to come and you will be able to check these things out in the comforts that I have been granted. :)mrdot.

Some pics of the NIP taken today: Her catamaran hulls. Her horrible rust. I think it's worse than the Queen of Burnaby's rust, now... I really wasn't pleased with lighting conditions today... all my photos turned out appallingly.

:)re. the rust on NIP, she takes a pounding on that crossing and is a very exposed to the elements design, but has been a remarkable conversion, which I had a small part in all those many years ago! I don't think our top guy should be making any disparaging remarks about Washington state ferries, or any other fleets, for that matter! But that being said, she has given many nautical miles of service, and has repaid her conversion costs many times over. mrdot
