From the February 2012 issue of Western Mariner magazine on the QQII's 2011 upgrade: Wow, that's a significant improvement. Does anyone know the approximate cost of this past refit? A 20% reduction in fuel consumption will add up savings quickly.

From the March 31 2011 Management's Discussion & Analysis report: So, how much does that route spend in fuel for a year? - according to the Performance Term #3 report, the total operating expenses for the Port McNeill route are approx $5.5million annually. Fuel is likely the 2nd highest part of that, after payroll. So I can't do a great payback-calculation for you.....but I tried.

I don't really expect the fuel savings to pay back completely the cost of the refit... it just offsets the money nicely so that it's a bit more bearable to spend that much money on a 43 year old boat.

Not that it helps your calculation out much, but the 2006 fuel report indicated that the Quadra Queen used 210 litres per round trip. So, now you just have to figure out: round trip as in Port MacNeill to Alert Bay or to Sointula; when the fuel was bought and what they paid (hedging experts take note), and the savings after the refit work in terms of increased fuel efficiency. Piece o' cake.

Great photos as always, Scott! It's nice to see an old ship get a 'new' life such as the QQII.

QQII seen by me on December 29, 2012. She's sailing from Alert Bay to Port McNeill, and I'm at the sidewalk park next to the Port McNeill ferry terminal. - in front of the corner of Haddington Island (if it weren't for the clouds, we'd see some spectacular snow-capped mainland mountains in the background of this photo) - in front of the southern suburbs of Sointula On board view from the bow View from the wharf at Sointula " Place of Harmony" ....and a part of the ship that caught my eye. This is stairway on car-deck leading upstairs. I call this the "Holstein Door"

Quadra Queen II, as seen by me today at Sointula BC. In the afternoon: - she's on her approach into the berth. --------------- In the evening, from the beach below the pub in downtown Sointula: - she's rounded the corner of Haddington Reef and is headed for Sointula - Port McNeill and the snowy mountains of Vancouver Island are in the background. A view never before seen on this forum.... Close-up of her port-side in the Sointula berth.

One final video montage from my recent Sointula trip. - QQII as seen from Port McNeill, on Dec.29, 2012
The sidewalk park along Beach Drive (next to the Port McNeill terminal) is great for photography angles of the arriving and departing ferry, on both of her routes.
I show the various approaches at different speeds.

A final set of photos of the Quadra Queen II ferry, from my trip to Sointula, last weekend. On board, her 4-lane car deck. - much more versatile than the 3-lane (with only 1 over-height) on the Tenaka. No wonder that Cortesians prefer Tachek (QQII's sister) the Tenaka, but I digress. At the berth in Sointula. A "looks like she's aground" shot. - she appears from behind a point on Malcolm Island, on her way to Port McNeill from Sointula. A photo by Mrs. Horn, of QQII on her way to Alert Bay, in the morning. That's Vancouver Island in the background ---------------------------- Many of you who have driven Hwy-19 to Port Hardy have noticed the gravel quarry that is just north of Port McNeill, and it's conveyor-belt that goes under the highway. - The shipping dock is visible from Malcolm Island, and Paul Martin's CSL freighters use this dock to take gravel loads to customers in California. When did the Quadra Queen II get her passenger cabin lengthened? Why did BC Ferries only lengthened her passenger cabin and not the Tachek?

Here's a paragraph from a recent item in Sonitula Ripple news web site, by Shane Field. - it concerns the future use of Quadra Queen II. from here: sointularipple.ca/2013/04/small-taste-of-an-early-ferry/--------------- This type of item is usually speculation-candy for us forum-folk. Who knows what vessel Capt. DeKoninck was referring to as possibly moving to Port McNeill's routes?

Who knows what vessel Capt. DeKoninck was referring to as possibly moving to Port McNeill's routes? Maybe a Bowen Queen sized vessel; most likely a 50 car vessel. Quinitsa? What route will the Quadra Queen II operated on? Will the Quadra Queen II become a spare vessel?
