My guess is that it's the North Island Princess A 55 year old vessel replacing a 44 year old vessel; does not make sense. I think they would build two 50 car vessels; one to replace the North Island Princess and the Quadra Queen II.

B.C Ferries has no money, and a large part of there fleet that should be replaced. I am not saying that this makes sense from a age aspect but capacity is capacity and the NIP would work. Look at the New west it will be 50 next year and its running as the #4 boat on the busiest route in the system, when they could be running a pair of Coastals.

A minor bit of info on the Quadra Queen II: - from April 2013 Ferry Advisory Committee minutes. ok, so the ship will gain a more flexible certification (Near Coastal is better), but the route itself will still be considered "sheltered waters". This gives the company more flexibility in allocating the QQII to different routes, should the need arise. ========== background info from HERE: (the string of ? ? ? is mine, for a part that I don't understand)

It's time that we had some fresh photos of the Quadra Queen II. - here are a few from this evening, at Sointula. Making the turn into the berth lane ----------- 3 variations on the same berth scene: - quick shutter speed, to darken the photo - regular lighting - a close-up --------------- more photos to be posted in the days ahead.

Forgive the barrage of QQII photos, but I thought these at-night views are worth posting, morso for their uniqueness than their quality. - from 9:00pm on Dec.28, 2013, at Sointula. Arriving at the berth. The berth area is part public-pier and part ferry-dock. Unique night-time view showing her starboard side (the pier railing is in the foreground) - I like how you can see the car deck at the bottom-left of the photo. Departure, empty - this is a "scheduled call" at Sointula, on an evening run from Alert Bay to Port McNeill. No one's going from Alert Bay to Port McNeill either, at least not with a vehicle on board. ------------- PS: The clouds were low and cool, although you can't see them in these photos.

Mr Horn, if you're going to reference low and cool clouds, the least you can do is actually show them, since that would justify your photography.
Don't try to bask in the reflected glow of someone else's inspiration.

A few views of the QQ-II at Sointula at her 4:30pm visit, on December 29, 2013. Her approach to the berth area: - she makes a 90-degree turn Entering the corral A couple of HDR items:

One final set of QQII photos from this evening. - I'm on the beach for her 7:00pm visit to Sointula. So I get a close vantage point, and also the dark-sky view. This sailing visit to Sointula was probably typical for traffic: - approx 10 vehicles arrived at Sointula, returning from the "big island" from the weekend. - 1 vehicle departed Sointula, headed back to Port McNeill. I am right at the water's edge for this photo:

Quadra Queen II on her 7:50am visit to Sointula, BC - December 30, 2013 The morning golden-hour of dawn... - I like the visual of the prop-wash in this dawn light - and I'm curious what the big-light is over on the Port McNeill hillside, in the photo background. I've seen it in lots of my darkness photos of this scene. Underway on her 7:50am sailing from Sointula to Port McNeill - a fairly full sailing for vehicle traffic, because it's Monday morning.

A few different views of QQ-II from late December. My attempt at a wide-angle long-reach style. - "RIA" means "fail" ---------------- Shot from Malcolm Island, as the ship travels from Alert Bay to Port McNeill - the Hyde Creek residential area of northern Vancouver Island is in the background. ------------------ At the Sointula berth: A low-light close-up of her superstructure: Dawn photo of the white-effect of her prop-wash. - I like the colouring in this photo.

I really like the second and third shots. I have only been to Sointula once but I remember that little dock right along side the berth area makes for some cool photos. I always thought the Tachek QQ2 and Tenaka were cute little ships! I dont get on those ones too much though!

Some more Cue-Cue-Too for new year's eve: - these pics are taken from Sointula's downtown core, during December 28-30, 2013. --------------------- Approaching Sointula, the place of harmony... ----------------------- Harmony having been experienced, she now leaves for Port McNeill and her next trip from Port Mc to Alert Bay: That moment when the backing-out ends, and the engines are switched to "Forward." Gotta love that prop wash. --------------- ps: If you compare my photos of QQ2 taken from these 3 days, pay attention to the monkey-island Christmas tree. The Christmas tree was up for December 28, but not for Dec. 29-30.

3 photos of QQ2's 4:25pm approach to Sointula, on December 28, 2013: Just before her approach turn: Part way through the turn: - showing her Christmas tree, and both her red & green Christmas navigation lights Headed for the berth: ----------- A lovely time of day for outdoor photography.

My video compilation of 3 day's worth of footage of Quadra Queen II, seen from Malcolm Island.
It was fun to be around a rarely-seen (by me) ferry on a rarely-seen (by me) route. Similar to most routes, he schedule has her only in the berth at Sointula for 10-minutes or less, seven times per day. Unless you're behind a camera fixed on the berth, you could easily see her approaching Sointula's berth, then turn away to do some work, and by the time you've looked at the berth again, she is gone.
----------
Here's my video work from this visit. It has a mix of lighting conditions, from daylight, to dawn/dusk, to night-time.
I hope that you enjoy it. (for best viewing, switch the YouTube gear-icon to highest quality)

Some December 2013 photos of the passenger lounge in Quadra Queen II: She is Mayne, and Tachek is Bowen... ------------------------ Trying my best to copy Scott's style. (It didn't work; probably because I was wearing sneakers) Looking forward along the port-side alleyway. I'm standing in front of the sun-deck door. --------------------- 2 pano shots from near the starboard stairwell door. Both are taken from roughly the same spot, one looking aft and one looking across to the port-bow corner.

Quadra Queen II seen by me at Port McNeill, mid-day on December 28, 2013. - she's arriving from Alert Bay. Her next trip would be McNeill to Sointula (with myself aboard) (note the Christmas tree on her monkey-island) With Sointula in the background: - the yellow building (to the right of the ferry) is the Co-op grocery store, which is the landmark building in town. ---------------- Making her turn at the berth.

Some on-board views of QQII's exterior. - from December 28, 2013. --------------------------------------- ------------- This shows that similar to Tachek, much of the aft end of the car deck is uncovered. I expect that Tachek's sundeck will have a narrower beam than this, because it is sitting atop a narrower structure. - ps: I spy a Christmas tree inside the bridge structure, on the starboard side.

The odd things to photograph on a ship: - here is her starboard stairwell. I like the photo effect of looking up this type of structure. This is QQ2. Compare it to the narrow stairwells of Tenaka, and these are much nicer to navigate. - Tachek 1.0 also had nice stairwells like this (width-wise).
