QQ2 view from Port McNeill. I shoot the same scene every year, and the weather is different from year-to-year and hopefully my videography slowly improves.

The Quadra Queen II is visiting Swartz Bay today to drop off some crew vehicles. Currently about 20 minutes out, I’ll see what I can do for pictures!

This is all I could manage, she was only there for a few minutes. Very neat seeing such a small boat in berth 3. I'm not sure when (if ever) the QQ2 would have done dock trials at SWB but it only managed to fit in after a bit of adjustments by the ship and terminal crew. To elaborate; the ships crew had to disassemble part of the (for lack of a better word) gate at the front of the car deck in order to leave enough room for the apron to come down. On shore side they had to rope up some of the apron fingers (as seen in the picture) because the apron was a bit too wide for the ship!

Many years ago, her sister ship Tachek was one of the route five vessels, but I imagine that at least one of the Swartz Bay berths would have been smaller then.

I finally had some free time yesterday and was able to capture Quadra Queen II arriving at Victoria while she was making her way to Point Hope Shipyard. Bonus was capturing her passing by big sister Spirit of BC while she was moored at Constance Bank. Nice work Chris! It looks as if QQ II is getting this TLC none too soon.

Cool to see the pics of Tachek at Swartz Bay. Tachek was a regular on route 5 in the early 90s, as Tenaka and Nicola were in the late 80s. Both berths 4 and 5 have been rebuilt since those days: those berths may have still been single lane loading at the time (maybe someone can confirm or refute??)

Quadra Queen II update from this afternoon. She went back in the water last week and it sounds like she might be going to Deas next for paint.

There is at least one picture I have seen in a book, somewhere, of Tenaka loading at Village Bay. Both Tenaka and Nicola served as the second ship on route 5 in the late 1980s. Tenaka in summer, Nicola in the off-season. Tachek took the spot over c. 1990, and once the Cumberland was settled in the first spot, Mayne Queen was the summer second boat, Tachek the off peak choice. Mayne Queen was the refit grunt until the Skeena was delivered, then Mayne Queen became year round second boat. Sometime around 1990ish the Tachek took over year-round as the second, and remained the off season boat until some time mid 1990s.

Here's Quadra Queen II arriving at Sointula, on evening of December 29, 2018 on her direct trip from Alert Bay to Sointula: The view is from my hotel room deck, hence the obstructions of the two log poles in the hotel exterior. The purpose of the photograph is to show a light-trail of the ship's navigation lights, showing her path from Alert Bay to Sointula. She comes into view on the far left in the background, and then moves from left to right, and then turning into the berth. Exposure time is 12 minutes, with maybe 4 of those minutes being end-of-trip time in the berth, in order to solidify the image of the ship. When doing a long exposure, movement is only captured by light, and the structure of the object is only captured when it is stationary for a long enough time, relative to the total exposure. So the photograph shows the travel of the ship's lights, on her route across my frame and then into the berth. I had fun... DSC01157 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr
