Here's an older photo sent to me by member, excapg2. It shows the Garibaldi II and the Nimpkish side by side at Woodfibre. This would have likely taken place when the Garibaldi II had just been replaced or was about to be replaced by the Nimpkish so the GII could go for refit.

Nimpkish seen on June 4, 2013 at Seymour Narrows, just north of Campbell River. - she's on her way down to Deas Dock to float-idle for the summer season (she's not needed during summer because of Route-40 service). Seen from the Highway 19 Seymour Narrows viewpoint. --------------------- Seen from the top of the Western Forest Products log-sort, just 1km north of the highway viewpoint. - not the largest ship ever to run these narrows. Going fast with that powerful tidal current. Making her turn into Discovery Passage -------------------- She's then goes out of view from this location. So I get into my car and travel south to Campbell River's Tyee Spit beach, and I arrive 5 minutes before she appears.... (see next post).

Nimpkish, as seen from Tyee Spit beach in Campbell River, June 4, 2013. - she's on her way south for a summer of inactivity at Deas. With Quadra Island's April Point Resort in the background, plus the splendid peak of Mt. Doogie Dowler. I love the view across to Quadra Island, with those mainland mountains in the background. Passing in front of Quathiaski Cove, where the Powell River Queen ferry is in berth. -------------------- After these photos, it was back into the car for a quick 5-minute drive in Campbell River to a beach on the south-side, on the 50th Parallel. - I got there just in time.... (see next post)

Nimpkish seen from Campbell River's Rotary Park, on the 50th parallel, opposite Cape Mudge lighthouse. - June 4, 2013. Quadra Island in near background, and Cortes Island in middle background. Entering Georgia Strait, where she heads in a diagonal direction towards the mainland (she's headed for Blubber Bay, on Texada Island, for a stopover) -------------------------------- My final stop on my Nimpkish chase was the beach at Oyster Bay park, south of Campbell River. Here is Nimpkish in front of Mitlenatch Island In front of those lovely Coast Mountains ======================= Next post from me on this adventure will be for my YouTube video compilation, which will take a while to edit and upload...

Thanks for that photo essay and all your chasing around, Mr Horn. Always interesting to see a boat 'after hours', and certainly an intriguing contrast- that teeny ferry and our imposing mountain scenery.
Wouldn't it be something if someone could hire a boat and follow the mighty Nimpkish around on her central coast route, with the winter snows on the peaks? A proposition that maybe you could put to Mrs Horn, when she's in a particularly indulgent mood.

I was just now looking at the BCFS autumn schedule for Nimpkish, to see what kinds of trips could be worked out on her, just to sample the "Nimpkish mid-coast experience." I think that if it ever happened, it would be a Mike-solo trip, as there would be nothing romantic or remotely comfortable about such a trip.

Today is Day-1 for the Nimpkish on the newly named "Discovery Coast Connector" summer route. She is currently headed for Ocean Falls, and then proceeds to Bella Coola. There is very little information known about the extent of any renovations done to the ship, in preparation for this different type of summer work. I pay close attention to the various ferry reports and media reports, and I haven't seen anything regarding shipyard work, or contractor work. I'm assuming that any work done has been done on-site in Bella Coola in recent weeks. I will be keeping watch for blog & media reports on how the connector service is going, as the season progresses. -------------- ps: Here is what the Minister said in the House, on March 3, 2014: (underline is my editorial emphasis) from HERE

I think Mr. Stone should review the Nimpkish's ship profile on the BCF website. It has been updated to reflect the Discovery Coast Connector route, but still says: "amenities - none"

Here's Todd Stone's trip-blog on his Discovery Coast Connector family vacation - complete with photos ! ...and the excerpt about his Nimpkish trip: OK, I have not been on MV Nimpkish. I'm sure it's a cute ferry, but saying it is a good tourism product on the mid coast is akin to saying Hiyu would be a good fit on the Anacortes-Sidney route. I find it hard to believe that Mr. Stone can say this plucky little ship is a suitable for The Discovery Coast, and do so with a straight face. I think he needs to stop drinking the Cool-Aid and step back into reality! Yes, I'm sure the breathtaking scenery the mid coast offers helps to distract passengers from the lack of amenities afforded on such a tiny vessel, but it's hard to ignore its diminutive size, especially when BC Ferries is having to turn away many customers as the posted article eluded to. The "Discovery Coast Connector" route may not be a bad solution, but clearly they need a larger boat, i.e. Northern Discovery. I'm not suggesting another Northern Expedition cruise ship, but perhaps something along the lines of the new Alaska Class ferry, which carries 53 cars (ASV standard), and 300 passengers - see link: www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/alaska_class/documents/010214_ACF_General_Arrangement.pdf , or maybe the new Fogo Island ferry built by Damen, which carries up to 60 cars and 200 passengers - see link: www.damen.com/en/news/2013/12/damen-to-deliver-80-m-ice-class-ferryOf course, those are strictly day boats, so perhaps a slightly larger design similar to either of those vessels, but it would include a few ensuite cabins for passengers, plus some fully reclining chairs in The Forward Lounge for those who do not want to spring for a cabin, or when the cabins fill up, and public washrooms that include showering facilities.

The following item was originally posted on the Coastal Ferry Act Review & Govt Response 2012-14 thread. I have placed this copy here to keep it with other Nimpkish items. This article is similar in tone to the Les Leyne Times-Colonist article posted by Mr. Horn (above). Note that this Tom Fletcher piece dates from several weeks ago.
An opinion piece from Tom Fletcher of Black Press...

A refurbished QPR would have been perfect for the Discovery Coast route. Nimpkish is ridiculous - way too small with too limited food services and washroom facilities. She would require a major, QoNW type of refurb to be suitable.

Great idea princessofvanfan, however those of us that think a refurbished QPR might have been an option, we will probably be hearing from the 'rust-bucket' crew.

The stories related by passengers on the Nimpkish must be incorrect or overblown eh? Minister Stone says the vessel was more than adequate for that route. Oh well, at least there's potable water...duh I suppose the proof of the pudding...as it were.

Nimpkish is getting a refit done, in April 2015.
I saw this mentioned in the minutes of the October 28, 2014 north coast Ferry Advisory Committee meeting.
I have no idea of what shipyard (or Deas?) is doing the work, and what type of work will be done.

I have no idea of what shipyard (or Deas?) is doing the work, and what type of work will be done. Yup, she will probably go high and dry, as her last refit was four years ago. Perhaps she will get hauled out at Deas, like the Nicola?

Is she going to be provided with new amenities like a solarium on her outer deck?
