:)to our younger members, many of the smaller units of BC ferries began life in the highways dept. and much of my earlier illustrations and some pics. were featured in the highways journal which BC ferries were part of at that time. :)mrdot.

:)further on the early bc ferry days, several larger units came under highways jurisdiction as well, as the earlier days of the Powell River -Little River route were under the highways fleet, and featured the old Chinook as Sechelt Queen, and the onetime Princess of Vancouver when she too suffered the indignity of a snubbed nose! :)mrdot.

The shot of Quinitsa at Tsawwassen is intriguing, partly because she's a very rare sight on the mainland, and also because of the paint job and the date.
1983 was the first summer that BC Ferries put two ferries on route 5 more or less full time, and Quinitsa served as the second boat '83 through '85, having been displaced from Gabriola by the launch of the Quinsam in '82.
So she was sailing for BC Ferries under Dept of Highways colours for at least two years. I don't recall the paint scheme when she showed up at Denman, probably in '87.

I was a kid living in Nanaimo when The Quinitsa began service to Gabriola in 1977, I believe, replacing The Klitsa. I remember being fascinated by the Z-drive propulsion system - you could see the propeller legs going into the water at all four corners of the ship.

If the cable ferry takes over the Buckley Bay - Denman West. What route while Quinitsa take over of the main vessel on the Gravelly Bay-Shingle Spit or the Heriot Bay-Whaletown or Vancouver Island-Cormorant Island-Malcolm Island or Westview-Blubber Bay or another route?

Based on what we've heard, the Quinitsa is likely to take over the Gravelly Bay-Shingle Spit Route when the Cable Ferry is built between Buckley Bay and Denman West. This will allow the Tachek to become the Main Ferry between Heriot Bay and Whaletown. As for the Kahloke, the only thing I can think she'd end up doing is act as a Relief Vessel. As for the Tenaka she will probably be retired when this takes place.

On a lower note, looks like BC Ferries' plan to retire the Tenaka when this Cable Ferry enters service has got the green light too... on the other hand, BCF would gain the Quinitsa as a regular relief vessel... Or the Kahloke depending on which vessel they want on Denman-Hornby. Perhaps a Summer/Winter Tandem? Considering how many times the Tenaka and Kahloke had to go into Shuttle Mode over the Summer, it might be a solution to have the Quinitsa do the run in Summer and the Kahloke in the Winter. I think Quinitsa will end up on the Gravelly Bay-Shingle Spit all year around after the Cable ferry comes into service.

Quinitsa will end up on the Gravelly Bay-Shingle Spit all year around after the Cable ferry comes into service. I'd expect to see Quinitsa on that route in the summer only. If she was on it year round, I could see it opening up a ton of scrutiny since the fuel burn would be more (at least double?), since the Quinitsa has four engines as opposed to the Kahloke's two engines. Not to mention the fact if whether or not she'd sail back and forth half full all of the time in the middle of the winter. What else could Quinitsa be used for? Not a whole lot of other routes. However I do see Kahloke being used as a relief vessel just like she was for the longest time on routes like Chemainus-Thetis-Penelakut, and now of course Mill Bay-Brentwood Bay. With that in mind, I suppose that's the only time you'd see Quinitsa running to Hornby in the winter - when Kahloke is providing relief elsewhere.
