JMT photoNew instalment in the historical dept. I will let people decide where and when and check back later to see how we are doing. Well folks, this photo was taken in June 1978 by one of my brothers at the now dis-used Montague Harbour Terminal and the vessel is almost certainly the Mayne Queen.

DOT photoThis photo, from about 1986, is of the Bowen Queen. Both it & her sister MQ were Swartz Bay regulars at that time, with the Bowen having been on the Fulford Harbour run at that time.

Another pic of the Mayne Queen, this time from the 4th of May, 1975. The picture is fuzzy but the Side ramps are clearly still there. JST photo ©The above pics by orcasnative are interesting in part because they clearly show a train up on the former BCR tracks above the terminal. The Horseshoe Bay Tunnel has been around since the early 1970's and that bit of track was no longer part of the main line. I guess they occasionally stored equipment or rolling stock in that bit of track. I believe that it is gone now, given over to ferry terminal expansion?

Excellent photos WCK, and Orcasnative!!
Interesting note to point out, regarding the rails up above the terminal, Jim. I believe those rails are still entact, and is just a siding now. The rails end just up above the washooms further up the hill along the holding lanes. I've seen some container coaches parked along that siding for months (if not a few years) now.
Those photos of Horseshoe Bay sure bring back memories of how much of a concrete jungle it once was. The waiting rooms were just a small shelter beside the berths with a few chairs. My impression of Horseshoe Bay when I was a child, was a dark and rainy place, and I can't seem to recall times when I was there as it was sunny out. Then there was Tsawwassen, which seemed to be the sunny terminal, no matter what time of the year. Ah, if only I was this age, back then.

Another view of the railing on the MQ where the side ramp once was. The area seems to have a rough top surface. 2 May 2007 - JST photo ©

Good call, WCK.
It almost looks as if the "rigid" section, is slightly higher than the rest of the railing. Unless that is an optical illusion...

Where would these side ramps have been used on the Mayne Queen?

Those are some great photos of Horseshoe Bay, Orcasnative. Thanks for those!
It's really quite something to see the 'before' shot of the terminal a number of years ago and to see what it looks like now. The overpass for offloaders was a heck of a lot better than the traffic light that they now have there. I remember loitering numerous times in the holding area before the toll booths under the cliffs due to sailing waits. As for Chris' comment on the waiting rooms, there was only the tiny one down near Berth 3 for ages, as I spent loads of time there while waiting for Bowen and Langdale sailings. For the longest time BCFC didn't concern themselves with waiting room areas since the HSB retail district was just outside the terminal.
The rails above the terminal are still there, even with all of the construction above and below that area. I sometimes see cars stowed there and at other times there's nothing on those tracks.

Love to see the vintage photos, thanks for posting. As for the Mayne Queen, talked to a friend who has been travelling to Mayne Island since the 60's and he cannot think of where they might have been used other than at Hope Bay or Port Washington on Pender Island or Lyall Harbour on Saturna. It will be interesting to find out why they were installed.

I'm guessing that the top photo is of the Mayne Queen, because of a side-loading gate aft-starboard. I am glad you like the photos, I have included the shot of Sturdies Bay as a fashion statement.

Here is a photo of a terminal and ferry taken probably in the early summer of 1970. The photographer was the late Dr. Max Edwards of Victoria. I was, once upon a time, the kid who delivered his daily copy of the Victoria Daily Times. This image is scanned from a slide that is dated Aug. 1970 so the photo date would be prior to that. The location and ferry identity I will leave for now. I would encourage some of the 'newer faces' around this forum to see if they can figure it out. Merry Christmas!

I'll say it's the Mayne Queen at Otter Bay.

It is definitely Montague Harbour. As for the ferry, since the Mayne has been guessed, I will say Bowen Queen...

It is indeed Montegue Harbour. The dock mechanism was operated by the ship's crew much like some of the inland ferries. The ferry's identity is given away by a careful examination of the ferry itself. Here's a larger version of the image: farm5.static.flickr.com/4021/4214616451_0db53ce772_o.jpg
