Here's a picture of the Mayne Queen a few weeks ago as she sails out of Active Pass towards Sturdies Bay. Mayne Queen

Anyone know when the Mayne Queen is due back? The Queen of Cumberland is out of service until at least May 16, that's 29 days. Currently the Eagle is taking on about 2/3rd of the Cumberland's sailings with Route 9 cancellations to facilitate this. The Quinitsa is also doing some sporadic sailings - but surely the return of the Mayne Queen will be welcome. Then the Bowen can take over Route 5, or 9?

The Mayne Queen will return to service on May 2nd I believe. However the Bowen Queen will then immediately head north to replace the Quadra Queen II. Route 9a will also be starting up effective May 4th to pick up the slack from what I gather

Mayne Queen, back and ready for action this afternoon, after nearly a two month hiatus for drydocking and TLC. Here she is tied up in Berth 5 at Swartz Bay, about to start up for the afternoon runs on Route 5a. Mayne Queen with a fresh coat of paint by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr

Here's a video view of me boarding Mayne Queen, doing a car-deck spin, and then disembarking at Galiano Island.
....the remainder of the video is of the drive up to Bluffs Park on Galiano.
The video also illustrates that some drivers really like to use turn-signals when boarding a ferry.

Last Friday, I rode my first truly "minor" BC Ferry, smaller than the Queen of Capilano (the other "small boat" I've ridden) and it was probably one of the most memorable experiences on a ferry that I have had, with being invited up to the bridge for a northbound Active Pass transit, and getting to see almost every other ferry in the area up close from the very open car deck, and being the ONLY one to walk on a mid-day sailing from a major terminal. I'll definitely be sad to see this boat go in a few years, but for now, I hope to be back to do it again.

A day trip on the Mayne Queen through the southern Gulf Islands is a great way to spend a day.

Getting to go up to the bridge (invited by the bridge crew after talking with them about my limited understanding of the schedule down on the car deck) and the "chill" small boat vibe makes it a great boat to enjoy a few hours. It was the 3:30p sailing from Swartz Bay to Saturna, Mayne, Galiano and non-stop return.

Was there ever a Captain on the Mayne Queen nicknamed captain crunch in the 60-70s?

Was there ever a Captain on the Mayne Queen nicknamed captain crunch in the 60-70s? The answer is yes. My brother (Mr DOT) used to refer to one of the Swartz Bay based skippers by that nickname. I will comment more about this later.
