Couple of shots of the Queen of Cumberland from my recent trip to the coast - I know it was done in the name of safety, but it's too bad the symmetry has been ruined on the Queens of Cumberland and Capilano. They just don't look as good as they used to! Oh well...

I've noticed the past few days that the Queen of Cumberland has been running late because of "Mechanical Difficulties with the Vessel" anyone know what's been going on?

Well, that would explain why one of the deckhands secured the Cumberland to the Village Bay dock with a big rope line when we came from Pender for the Sunday night transfer rigamarole...don't think I had seen that before and suspected something was up...that and the fact that the Cumberland was 30 minutes late picking us up from Pender.

A walkthrough of the Queen of Cumberland shot back at the end of December. Now here for your viewing pleasure almost 6 months later. Up Next: The Mayne Queen. Curtis' video shows the commemorative plaque regarding the ship being named the Queen of Cumberland, with reference to the conditions that Cumberland's miners worked in. The ship was launched in 1992, when Mike Harcourt and the NDP were in government. I doubt very much that that plaque would have ever been so worded had the previous Socreds or subsequent Liberals been in power... in fact, I wonder if the boat would even have been given the name she has. The Cumberland Museum does not launder the community's past, and is well worth a visit if anyone is ever in the vicinity.

Queen of Cumberland berthed @ Village Bay, Mayne Island. I had just gotten off the Cumberland and transferred onto the Mayne Queen (from which this shot was taken) which was heading for Sturdies Bay on Galiano. The Cumberland would soon depart for its return run back to Swartz Bay. 8 November 2017 © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Apologies if this sounds a bit callous, obviously as a layman I know little about the inner workings of both BC Ferries and Transport Canada... But what's the freakin' holdup with getting the Queen of Cumberland back into service? She had her incident with the lifeboat's davit failing during training a little less than two weeks ago, and as of yesterday evening BCF announced she'll be out til May 16 - almost a full month! Last week they were saying she'd be back for May 1. As per the most recent service notice (but reiterating past ones almost verbatim): "We are investigating the root cause of davit failure and need to replace the rescue boat and cable. Once the investigation is complete, we will begin the necessary repair work, which includes the replacement of the davit. Acquiring this replacement part and the installation is going to take some time." This question may not be answerable without insider knowledge, but do you think it's the investigation that is taking time, or did they have to repair or order a new lifeboat and that's the holdup? www.bcferries.com/schedules/travel-advisory.html

Could be that they had to have a new davit manufactured from scratch, a custom fit as it where.
“We are investigating the root cause of davit failure and need to replace the rescue boat and cable,” says a statement from B.C. Ferries.
“Once the investigation is complete, we will begin the necessary repair work, which includes the replacement of the davit. Acquiring this replacement part could could take several days.”
It will then have to be installed and certified, and crew trained in its use.

Cumby just exiting Active Pass on her way to Swartz Bay! Additionally, we sent over about half a dozen stores carts with food to Tsawwassen this morning labelled for the Cumby. Things are looking good for her return to service tomorrow!!

The mid-afternoon position of the Route-5 ships: Queen of Cumberland in berth-4 and Mayne Queen in berth-5, at Swartz Bay. On the Holiday Monday schedule (July 2, 2018), they departed within 10 minutes of each other, after 2:00pm. It's a busy day, and both of Cumberland's platform decks are being used. 20180702_131756 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

On my morning trip from Galiano Island to Swartz Bay on July 3, 2018, we stopped at both Village Bay and Otter Bay. It was a morning milk-run. At Otter Bay, the platform decks were deployed. I was on the car deck next to a row of Galiano cars, and was in a perfect and safe spot to witness the platform being deployed, from a main car-deck perspective. Here are 2 stills and the video: Platform fully raised, allowing for overheight main deck. . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr Platform and its ramp lowered. . by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

Here's a Swartz Bay Berth-4 view of Queen of Cumberland arriving and releasing traffic from her two platform decks:
- July 2, 2018 on a busy Holiday Monday afernoon
Yes, this ship has been operating these ramps since 1992, but I still find them fascinating to watch. Even after 26 years.
