Isn't it kind of Trumpish to like one's own post?

In regards to my post above Dated Nov 26, After research I found out which ship that was. It was called the Governor Cornwallis which had a fire and sank in Dec, 1944. mv Scotian ( Smokwa) was probably built to replace her. blog.halifaxshippingnews.ca/2017/09/dartmouth-ferry-governor-cornwallis.htmlHowever, There is almost nothing out there about the SS Smokwa as the Scotian. BTW, What Does "Smokwa" mean anyway?

BTW, What Does "Smokwa" mean anyway? Smokwa apparently means 'crane' in a Salish dialect. Makes sense, since bigger Black Ball sister Kahloke meant 'white swan', or in some circles, 'Brandon Swan'. You're probably right about her origin, given the timeline and the fact the she looks to have been bigger than the ' Cornwallis.

Another interesting- and somewhat curious- photo from the Bowen Museum & Archives, on this page of Bainbridge shots. The Bainbridge docked at Snug Cove, but not at a car ferry dock. Dated 1956, which is also the date they assign to her first vehicle carrying run. I'm a bit skeptical about that, since Union Steamships were still operating then, but perhaps for a brief period, Union and Black Ball service overlapped. Cy Peck also served Bowen in those early days, but the Archives has no photos. As I think I've noted before, Bainbridge is the very first ferry I have memories of. Family holidays on Bowen in the early '60s are a special memory. bowenislandmuseum.ca/?s=Bainbridge

Video featuring the Bainbridge (fast forward to 3:42) 'SS San Mateo', thanks for unearthing that clip. Very brief, but the footage of the Bainbridge coming into Snug Cove brought back happy memories of weeks spent in delightfully musty Union Steamships cottages, and seeing my father off on Sunday evenings. She seemed like such a grand ship to a six or seven year old kid.
