I rode on the Sunshine Coast Queen a few times just before BCF retired her. I enjoyed her uniqueness in the fleet. She was a Sunshine Coast landmark that is now nothing but a legend.

I think I've seen that last one before, or at least something remarkably similar. And yes, those are the HSQ and LQ accompanying her.

About 20 years ago, I had some slides that my friend's father had taken in the early 70s converted to prints.. The Susie Q, courtesy of John Jameson Sr. Attachments:

Does anyone have any interior photos of the Suzie Q or remember what her interior was like? From looking at all available photos, it looks like she had a lounge at one end, where the four rectangular windows were, and her cafeteria at the other end. Anyone?

From looking at all available photos, it looks like she had a lounge at one end, where the four rectangular windows were, and her cafeteria at the other end. Anyone? The only interior photo I've seen of this ferry is in a book I have of Michigan Ferries. I've scanned six pages of this book showing construction photos. This is the only interior photo of this ferry in my book collection. There might be another on Page 120 in this book, but the caption doesn't show positive identification of where the photo was taken. You will need to buy this book to see more great photos of this ferry. You could also view this in a library (use ILL if needed). One more thing. If WSF had purchased this ferry for 1979 use here after the sinking of the Hood Canal Bridge, I would have suggested that she would be renamed SUQUAMISH (SUzy-Q-UAMISH) and had her placed on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth run alongside the KLAHOWYA. Have the Whidbey ferry KULSHAN running shuttles between Southworth and Vashon. Having a big 175-car ferry like this on the Southworth run would have relieved some of the traffic congestion the Bremerton run was getting from folks taking the southern route around the Canal. The SSQ wasn't fit with foot passenger gates like most of the other ferries here and foot passengers would have had to use the car deck for loading activities at terminals having foot passenger planks. Three Steel-Electrics would have been placed on the Columbia Beach run and the OLYMPIC would have joined the RHODODENDRON at Keystone (WSF would have had to find another tie up location for the OLY as there were no additional slips available at that time on the Keystone run, which was a couple of years from being capable of berthing two ferries).
Here's what I would have had as a vessel assignment roster in 1979:
San Juans 160 KALEETAN 100 EVERGREEN STATE 075 KLICKITAT 035 VASHON
Keystone - Port Townsend 065 RHODODENDRON 055 OLYMPIC
Port Townsend - Edmonds 206 WALLA WALLA
Columbia Beach - Mukilteo 075 ILLAHEE 075 NISQUALLY 075 QUINAULT
Temporary Hood Canal Commercial Service (while Lofall and South Point docks were being restored for vehicle use) 00? BEACH GIRL
Lofall - South Point Passenger only with bus services at each end while vehicle slips were being constructed
Edmonds - Kingston 100 TILLIKUM
Seattle - Winslow 206 SPOKANE 160 ELWHA
Seattle - Bremerton 160 HYAK 160 YAKIMA
Fauntleroy - Vashon Fauntleroy - Southworth 175 SUQUAMISH (ex SUNSHINE COAST QUEEN) 100 KLAHOWYA
Vashon - Southworth 065 KULSHAN
Tahlequah - Point Defiance 040 HIYU
Here's the actual vessel assignments in 1979:
San Juans 160 KALEETAN 100 EVERGREEN STATE 075 KLICKITAT 035 VASHON
Keystone - Port Townsend 065 RHODODENDRON
Port Townsend - Edmonds 206 WALLA WALLA
Columbia Beach - Mukilteo 075 ILLAHEE 065 KULSHAN 055 OLYMPIC
Temporary Hood Canal Commercial Service (while Lofall and South Point docks were being restored for vehicle use) 00? BEACH GIRL
Lofall - South Point Passenger only with bus services at each end while vehicle slips were being constructed
Edmonds - Kingston 100 TILLIKUM
Seattle - Winslow 206 SPOKANE 160 ELWHA
Seattle - Bremerton 160 HYAK 160 YAKIMA
Fauntleroy - Vashon - Southworth 100 KLAHOWYA 075 NISQUALLY 075 QUINAULT
Tahlequah - Point Defiance 040 HIYU
Here's the actual vessel assignments in 1980:
San Juans 160 KALEETAN 100 EVERGREEN STATE 075 KLICKITAT 035 VASHON
Keystone - Port Townsend 065 RHODODENDRON
Port Townsend - Edmonds 100 TILLIKUM (Spring phaseout)
Columbia Beach - Mukilteo 075 ILLAHEE 075 NISQUALLY 055 OLYMPIC
Temporary Hood Canal Commercial Service (while Lofall and South Point docks were being restored for vehicle use) 00? BEACH GIRL (Route deleted)
Lofall - South Point (Spring debut for vehicles) 100 TILLIKUM 065 KULSHAN
Edmonds - Kingston 160 ELWHA
Seattle - Winslow 206 SPOKANE 206 WALLA WALLA
Seattle - Bremerton 160 HYAK 160 YAKIMA
Fauntleroy - Vashon - Southworth 100 ISSAQUAH (New ferry) 100 KLAHOWYA 075 QUINAULT
Tahlequah - Point Defiance 040 HIYU
It would have been nice to have the SUZY Q here on Puget Sound in 1979. She would have been a great asset to our system, at least on a temporary basis.
The numbers preceding the ferry names are for their car capacities back in that year.

Thanks, FerryNut, for those pix. Very interesting she had twin screws at each end.

I was poking around in an antique mall in Edmonton a while ago and came up with an unusual find. I found something a little out of the usual for the prairies. Thought you might find it interesting, its from 1953. not exactly an alberta thing but glad someone thought it was worth passing on.

as an aside to this schedule I sent a copy to a friend and she was thankful she said they had put the bridge in lol as she took a very wide load over the bridge a few years ago and didn't want to think of dealing with barges or ferries lol.

I realize that she was a heavy weight ice quality ship, but I thought that even the toughest of ships would have a few months when they couldn't run on the Great Lakes.

Thanks for sharing that with us, Piglet! I never did get a chance to ride her before she was retired. She spent a few winters after retirement in Swartz Bay in the late '70's until she was finally sold in 1981.

Thank you 'dave2' for posting these items. They give all of us a bit of history from the time BC Ferries / the BC Government decided to proceed with the forth & fifth C-class vessels (Surrey & Oak Bay), and the stretching of the PR-class trio. It also gives us an indication of the then Social Credit government's attitude toward ship building in BC, and the importance of BC Ferries as part of BC's transportation infrastructure. What a contrast from the reconstituted Socred-Liberal government that we have today.
I don't recall anything about a plan to convert the Susie Q into a truck ferry. This is 'news' to me 35 years after the fact. The idea must have been discarded fairly quickly.
Quote from then Premier Bill Bennett: How many times has this claim been made?

Wow, what an interesting documentary. I never did sail on the Suzie Q, but remember seeing her and Langdale Queen at Horseshoe Bay when I was a kid during our many trips to the mainland from Nanaimo during the early-mid 70's.
