I didn't' realize that the Needles vessel was that new....from 1990. Nanaimo, No wonder the confusion... It seems that there was another Needles. MV Needles, Arrow Lake Xsing at Faquier, March 1981 MV Needles [Two], Arrow Lake Xsing at Faquier, August 2005 I am fairly sure that the old Needles is now called the Shelter Bay.

I've never been on a cable ferry, so forgive me for asking what might be a really dumb question, but...
are they actually pulled along on the cable, or is it just used as a guide?

Thanks, Nanaimo. Your photo of the Shelter Bay looks to be either an identical sister, or genuine article, proving the old Needles is now the Shelter Bay. Mr Hornby... A closeup of the new Needles... There are three cables. The outside ones are for guidance. The inboard one is propulsion I gather. The motor that pulls the cable is not on shore ( ). I believe it to be on the ferry. I guess by 'cable ferry' they mean that the vessel has no props and is pulled along by the centre cable?

Whoever the photographer 'Mr Awesome' is, he seems to live on a planet where all the ferries, be they on a lake or on the ocean, are fighting against a very strong downward tide. Must make navigation quite a challenge.

Yeah I guess I can see what you mean. So, are you saying that you do not like my photos? I'm a terrible photographer. I don't have a lot of knowledge about composition, and I have a cheap camera. Most of the people on this forum do infinitely better than I do on any given ferry scene. But there's something that I am trying my best to keep in mind: the ocean is fairly flat, and ferries generally do not head up or downstream. Keep your camera level. A couple of forum members have recounted their experiences with 'Shipspotters', and their rigorous standards for contributions. This forum's requirements aren't anywhere near that strict.

On another note, I agree with Neil, keeping your camera level and straight is important. If you can't, it's easy to straighten your images on the computer using Windows Live Photo Gallery.

I think iPhoto does the job too...

To do this, select your desired photo to straighten, then click on the pencil that says "Edit" below it, then click on "Straighten".

I really never noticed any problems with homophones or the like on my part... I think my major grammar deficiency is occasionally stretching the definitions of seldom-used words... EDIT: And over-tensing verbs... I often screw around with my conditional past and subjective past tenses
