The Coastal Celebration's 5pm sailing is still at Tsawwassen as of 7pm. They are holding due to an oil spill incident on the ferry. She is in berth 5 the SOBC in berth 4 the Rennie in berth 3 the Burnaby in 2 and the New West in berth 1 so Tsawwassen is full up right now. The Celebration should be leaving soon. Too bad they cant sail the SOVI at 7pm seeing she is just sitting at Swartz Bay. This is going to delay the Celebaration's sailings for the rest of the night!
Edit: Coastal Celebration left Tsawwassen at 7:02pm on her 5pm departures so it looks like there will be two 7pm departures and two 9pm departures and probably an 11pm departure out of Tsawwassen unless they cancel the last round trip from Swartz Bay but the 9pm is filling up so I dont think they will. Gonna be interesting at Swartz Bay as there is not room for two coastal's. As the SOVI is in berth 1.

I did a quick search on Google and found this. No shots where fired rather they found a man dead on the upper vehicle deck. CTV Vancouver Published Thursday, February 20, 2014 10:37AM PST Last Updated Thursday, February 20, 2014 11:15AM PST Officials are investigating the sudden death of a middle-age man aboard a BC Ferry early Thursday morning. The man was found slumped over seated on an upper vehicle deck of the ferry, which was heading from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo just after 7 a.m. He wasn’t associated with a vehicle, according to police. The ferry returned to Horseshoe Bay and first responders removed the man’s body from the vessel. Const. Jeff Palmer said there appears to be “nothing at all suspicious” about the incident and the BC Coroners Service is now investigating the man’s cause of death. Several trips were canceled in the aftermath including the 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Queen of Oak Bay ferry sailings to Nanaimo. Travellers are asked to check BC Ferries’ website for updates regarding ferry service between Horseshoe Bay and Nanaimo. Read more: bc.ctvnews.ca/man-found-dead-on-bc-ferry-police-say-not-suspicious-1.1695915#ixzz2tthzbOzTThis has become a rather sad story. Yesterday's Times Colonist reports that this fellow has still not been identified, two weeks after his death. He had no ID on him, and the coroner and West Van police are asking for the public's help. His photo was in the story.
Sad to reflect on someone being so obscure that no one has come forward to say this was their dad, their brother, their husband... whatever.

The news reports I have heard have said it happened on the 9pm ferry from Departure Bay but when I first heard the story I thought it said the first ferry from Horseshoe Bay because everything that morning was cancelled. Is this right???

I saw a local (Nanaimo) news story yesterday saying that the man has now been identified. - likely thanks to the media blitz of his photo. However, seeing the various photos of this man makes me think that I should smile more when I'm at a ferry terminal, for the cameras. - not that I'm concerned about my mortality, but because it's obvious that I'm being photographed many times.

I for one will be glad to see an end to the Microwaved Meals on the Sky and the return of Full Cafeteria Service to Route 17. If I were to do a word association thing connected with the Island Sky, the first thing that comes to mind would be "horrible food". In fact, as noted gourmet Hannibal Lecter said to the kid on the plane who had objected to airline cuisine, "It isn't even food, as I understand the definition." I suppose for the 45 minute trip across Jervis inlet it might be acceptable to serve frozen crap in plastic, but on the longer runs the ' Sky has been doing this past winter and into the spring, it's completely unacceptable.

It's completely unacceptable to serve that crap to those of us who may cross Jervis Inlet as well.

2 ships were down this morning for a round trip due to mechanical problems. The Alberni cancelled a round trip and so did the Cowichan this morning. At least it is one of the less busy days of the weekend.

The North Island Princess is experiencing Mechanical Difficulties at the moment which saw the last Round Trip of the night cancelled. Now it appears repairs will take longer than overnight. As a result, Water Taxi Service has been set up as has been the case in the past. Link: www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=850068

The Queen of Burnaby was delayed an hour this morning due to a fire on a pleasure craft off Harwood Island. She was one of the first on the scene and crews assisted in retrieving the single occupant of the boat who is alright. The CCGS Cape Caution was dispatched soon after to deal with the fire. More can be seen on the Powell River Peak's Facebook Page. Link: www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=850654

It looks like an extra sailing was added on route 18 for the grads of Brooks Secondary School:

1 Aug 14, due to heavy BC Day long weekend traffic there is unscheduled sailings on:
Route 2, Queen of Cowichan Route 3, Queen of Coquitlam Route 7, Island Sky
This used to be a lot more common in the 1990s and early 2000s. I think a combination of more realistic scheduling and an overall drop in traffic have reduced these extra trips on major routes quite substantially.

It is an overall drop in traffic on routes 1,2, and 3. Route 1 in past years also had an extra unscheduled sailing on the Friday of the BC Day weekend. Very busy at the major terminals and route 1 is the only route running behind. Route 30 from TSA sold out around 1830h and route 2 from HSB was full at 1945h before the Cowichan was scheduled for an extra round trip. Nice to see the Coquitlam and Cowichan doing four round trips.

As 'Dane' and 'hwy19man' point out, traffic is down on routes 1, 2, and 3. I'm sure a Royal Commission will be called, hundreds of thousands of dollars spent to get to the bottom of this overall traffic decline. The present incompetent administration will however put a much different spin on this week-ends need for extra sailings as pure economic evidence that at $ 71.00, car and driver, is not the major contributor to the general traffic decline. Of course not. At 71 bucks a pop, the current mismanagement of the fare structure is well within the electorate's tolerance level. All's well in route 10 and 40-ville too,oh, right they canned route 40 as being 'unneeded'. Yup, makes sense to me. If the sudden surge of traffic on routes 1,2, and 3 gets totally out of hand, and more vessels are required, I'm sure the 'NorEx' and 'NorAd' could be sent South as 'loaners'. I wonder what the effect on overall traffic volumes might be on routes 1,2, and 3 if more realistic fares were introduced? At $ 71 car and driver alone, I would quake at the thought of planning a trip with a standard vehicle and a family of 4. Yikes!!! There IS a chapter or two in most Economics 101 text books that explains the relationship between selling prices and sales volumes. (Fares and traffic volume). Lower fares will lead to an exponential increase in traffic volume. Guaranteed.!! Extra sailings may become more common place.

A pair of medical emergencies, one to each vessel on route three have put the route more than an hour behind schedule!
Update as of 1514h: Please be advised that the Queen of Surrey is currently operating 63 minutes behind schedule due to a medical emergency.
Update as of 1326h: Please be advised that the Queen of Coquitlam is currently operating 56 minutes behind schedule due to a medical emergency.www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=865715 www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=865629

I think that was a berth availability delay for the 'Surrey, resulting from the 'Coquitlam's delay.

Thanks Dane for the explanation. That would be an unusual coincidence for that to happen.
The delays on route 3 have become longer, it is now 90 minutes. The Surrey ended up doing the Coquitlam's schedule. The result of all this is that a round trip for the Queen of Surrey has been canceled (1935h and 2040h). It will sit in port for 45 minutes at Langdale and do its final trip on time.

More clutch issues for the Surrey I see.
Interesting that they're providing an extra RT on route 7 this week, because the thurs-mon schedule has better connectivity for Powell Riverites. Perhaps this is a way of 'making up' for the issues on Sunday? Hopefully people take advantage of this later sailing.

Perhaps one of the regular BC Ferries employees that issues the service notices is away on holidays and their replacement person actually gives a care or two about how notices should be written. Just guessing on why the more human touch in this service notification though.

The Queen of Cowichan is having issues today. She's currently halfway across the strait bound for Nanaimo and sailing at only 16.5 knots. Her 12:50 and 15:10 sailing have been cancelled. No word yet if Coastal Renaissance will be fired up to save the day.

Not often the Quadra route gets cancelled by weather, and it seems a bit curious right now, as EC currently reports gusts of 43k at Campbell River.
Not a good day for a cancellation on route nine, as I believe the 'Nanaimo takes on fuel on Saturdays, so if she isn't able to do the afternoon crossing, that will impact the schedule another day, as well.
Folks on Cortes and Texada cut off again... been a bad week for them.
