My first post. Let's see if a YouTube video shows up. I was on the stern having arrived on my motorcycle after boarding started from Clinton. We were about half way across and the engines were suddenly cut. Surprised me as I haven't ever had that happen and knew we weren't that close to Mukilteo yet. Several seconds later the PA system keyed up and I started to wonder if an emergency was happening. Then the voice told us there were Orca whales on the stern. I ran up and caught this video as we slowly drifted. The whales did their thing for a few minutes and as they cleared the port and eventually stern the voice said, "No extra charge...." Engines fired back up and we continued on. Sort of fitting I guess since I understand there was an Orca whale captured on Penn Cove years earlier they named Tokitae. Welcome to the Forum! Terrific video.

This showed up in the "Spotlight" section on the WSF homepage:
This most likely is temporary repairs.

This showed up in the "Spotlight" section on the WSF homepage: I am happy to hear they will finally be fixing these ramps. I am also happy to have found out that the Samish is on track for completion, delivery, sea trials and her service entry all to happen Winter-Spring 2015 and will enter service in the San Juan Islands. Yay! I will get to ride her because I travel to Friday Harbor all the time.

I was walking on the ferry yesterday morning, and noticed at least one ramp had been modified. I snapped a quick pic, before the cars started to roll. It appears to be a slightly curved piece of metal, installed just prior to the sharp edge: Brad/Clinton, WA

For those who may ask, this is not the permanent fix for the ramps. One of the weekly bulletins stated that this is a temporary measure to test how well the tapered curve will work before doing the finished work. Tokitae will be taken out of service for the permanent fix.

I took my first ride on the Tokitae on July 30th, ironically the day when she broke down in the afternoon. I also got a chance to grab some sunset shots (the first on this forum, probably) on September 13th. Thru shot approaching Mukilteo: MV Tokitae approaching Mukilteo - Washington State Ferries by SolDuc Photography, on Flickr Perfect morning lighting. While Mukilteo/Clinton is a short run the 144s are designed to work throughout the system. The Bremerton and San Juan runs are much longer and the cabin space will be needed and appreciated. Someday a 144 will have to fill in at Winslow or Kingston and the cabin will seem small.

Is the galley on the Tokitae at the Mukilteo or Clinton End? And Which end is the elevator at?

Is the galley on the Tokitae at the Mukilteo or Clinton End? And Which end is the elevator at? To my knowledge, the cafeteria on every ferry is on the No. 2 end, which would be the Clinton end. Also, Tokitae has 2 elevators, one on each end. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, I'm not 100% on these facts.

You are right about the elevators but I am not 100% sure about which end the galley is on for every boat. I know it is on the No. 2 end of the Tokitae because I was looking at a vessel layout/plans sheet.

Whoa. The Tokitae is working Edmonds-Kingston! (And the Yakima is headed for Eagle Harbor.) I did not see that one coming!
Anyone know how well suited it's proving to the route? Are all passenger cabins open?

Are all passenger cabins open? One of our group members mentioned that the Yakima came from SJI instead of the Hyak because she needs some attention at Eagle Harbor. They only had to run her on Ed-K until they could free up the Tokitae. For sure, a last minute change. Let's see if any of the list members get up there tomorrow to check out the upper deck, which should be open.

The Yakima was used yesterday because the Tokitae was doing the annual AFECT cruise. The Yakima was running on reduced power and needed to get to Eagle Harbor, so The Tokitae was moved to Kingston. The galley is not open, but I believe the upper deck is. I really was hoping that our crew would be able to work on her, but the Spokane was made the #1 boat. Here's a shot from Kingston while we were just getting ready to make the first run of the day. Tokitae and Spokane at Kingston by zargoman, on Flickr

I did see her from far as I was driving home and thought that was a super, until I realized that boat had the 45º Exhaust tip at the end of the of the stack and it came to me that it was one of the new boats! Did they put the Walla2 on hold or did it go back for inspection or such?

ok that's what I thought... didn't think that it was due for an inspection.... as far as I know, they would never move the Spokane, it has run between kingston and edmonds for all my life... 17 almost 18 years now... i remember riding on it when I was 4.... the Puyallup was 2 years old then

It's all a matter of perspective. (The Walla Walla was actually first to leave Winslow in 1997 when the Tacoma came on line; the Spokane didn't leave until 1998 when the Wenatchee came along.)

ya I still got the photo of me from one of the last year the Walla2 was permanently assigned at Winslow.... I was about 3 or 4 months old, but not to get off topic, Tokitae's main route is Mukilteo am I correct? I only ever been on that run once and rode it once both ways...
