BC Ferries needs to start showing some consistency in the #'s that they report for auto equivalents for each vessel in the fleet. The BCFS public website still says this re the HSQ: So what is the 'real' capacity these days for the Powell River class trio?

The BCFS public website still says this re the HSQ: So what is the 'real' capacity these days for the Powell River class trio? I counted 74 cars last summer on a full Bowen Queen, coming back from Saltspring.
There's a heckuva discrepancy between the union's figure for the HSQ and BC Ferries'. 55 or 70? I think we need someone to actually count vehicles on a full load and report.
I looked on the TC ship registry site and saw that Quinitsa is supposedly eleven metres longer than the HSQ. There's no way that's accurate. Seems to me that given the HSQ's length and breadth, the capacity should be closer to 70 than 55.

The break down (again) of the cable ferry earlier today apparently led to a two kilometre backup along the old island highway of people headed mainly toward Hornby. My daughter lost her reservation for the 3:15 from Duke Point, because BC Ferries has nothing in place to compensate people for the loss of their money when a connecting ferry breaks down.
The cable ferry continues to win friends and admirers.

That raises the question as to whether they can even process customers through the two toll booths fast enough for sailings every twenty minutes with two boats. It will also produce a tremendous line up on the east side of Denman, with 100 car capacity to Deman and 25 to Hornby. What a day.

Quote from Darin Guenette: "A sea-water hose burst in one of the engine rooms and water filled up a 'void fluid holding space' that sits below both engine rooms - After that space was filled, some water was seen gathering in the bottom of one of the engine rooms, so as a safety precaution, all electronics have been shut down".
Fortunately, a truck with the capacity to pump out the water happened to be available on Denman, where the barge was sitting. If it hadn't been there, the delay would have been much longer.
It may be that, far from being alarmist, Pete Kimmerly may have missed some of the potential flaws and deficiencies of this vessel. I don't think he predicted hydraulics issues or under designed hoses. Most of his points have yet to be answered by long term service, and who knows what niggling little failures will sideline the barge along the way.

So the NIP sailed at 11:25 and broke down again. The Burnaby did not wait for Texada transfers for her 11:50 sailing.
BTW: Pretty sure the Quinitsa doesn't have Near Coastal II certification (which is the classification for route 18).

No mention of the 'Burnaby adding any Texada service... I wonder if perhaps she refuels on Saturday afternoons and is unavailable. This is a much longer disruption than Denman and Hornby experienced on Thursday. The only saving grace is that it occurred on a less busy part of the long weekend.
Those of us served by the cable ferry whine about being guinea pigs, but Texadians have the other side of the coin- a nearly sixty year old vessel well past its expected service lifespan.

NIP is operating slowly this evening, on one engine. She is having tug-assist to get in and out of the Westview berth.
Video & stills tomorrow.

And, naturally, this breakdown occurs on one of the biggest holiday weekends of the year. Between this and the cable-thingy breaking down on Thursday, it does seem like the bad luck karma has been picking on BC Ferries a fair bit this year. Usually, we hear about one of the San Juan ferries breaking down on the big holiday weekend - so far, so good this year. Hope I didn't jinx it

No service notice yet, but according to Colin Palmer (Powell River Regional District board member) in a facebook post, the following is happening: - Queen of Burnaby has another oil leak problem, and will be taken out of service on July 23 - Island Sky will move to Comox Route, with a couple Texada call-ins - NIP and Quinitsa will do Jervis Inlet route, until NIP breaks down and then it's just Quinitsa
No BCF confirmation of this, yet.

A commenter on Dear BC Ferries was just saying the NIP is out for the running too... But who knows how true that it at this point. A rather unfortunate drama at the end of life for the Burnaby. These repairs cannot be cheap, either. Here's to hoping the Salish class arrive as soon as possible.

Texada has a major arts festival happening this weekend. I can understand the anger of the community over their regular ferry service being cancelled.
One Texada facebook poster demanded BC Ferries bring up the two Albion ferries to fill in. News flash...
