Blast from the past time. I was digging through a box full of old stuff today, and ran across some old airline ticket jackets and timetables - remember when they used to use ticket jackets? First up is an AirCal ticket jacket from 1986. AirCal was absorbed into American Airlines right around that time. Unfortunately, American severely cut back and/or eliminated the routes AirCal used to serve. We saw this again a few years later when USAir bought out PSA. Almost immediately, they axed the every half-hour shuttle flights, dubbed "PSA Expressway" between LAX and SFO. Next is a real rare find, a Wien Air Alaska Ticket Jacket with the route map on the back cover. I'm not sure what happened to Wien. They just quietly folded in the mid 80's. And last, I managed to hang onto a San Juan Airlines timetable from 1988. Founded in 1947, San Juan Airlines faithfully served the San Juan Islands and Puget Sound region up until 1989, when a disastrous partnership with United Airlines sucked the airline dry and then spat them back out again, quite dead, I'm afraid. There's a newer airline called San Juan Airlines that serves the islands from Boeing Field, but they never quite filled the shoes of the old San Juan Airlines that I remember. San Juan Airlines Route Map, 1988 San Juan Airlines was a staple in the islands when I was growing up. I flew on them numerous times over the years. My favourite San Juan Airlines memory is getting to sit in the co-pilot seat on one of their 9 passenger Cessna 402's, which happened a few times. That was the best view on the plane, and it was really exciting coming in and out of Sea Tac, besides getting to see everything the pilot was doing.

I used to collect airline ticket jackets and timetables, mostly from flights I had been on or those close family members gave me after their flights. Here are a few oldies that I just found and scanned in. It's kind of neat to have them because ticket jackets are a thing of the past. United Airlines Ticket Jacket, 1988: this was actually a San Juan Airlines flight from Seattle to Bellingham during the short period that San Juan Airlines was absorbed into the United Airlines system as one of their regional feeders. It wasn't long after this that United bankrupted the small airline and forced them out of business, which was really sad, because San Juan Airlines had been a staple of the islands since 1947. Speaking of San Juan Airlines, here is their timetable in 1987. I flew them quite a bit when I lived on Orcas as a kid, especially if I was continuing down to California. Seattle would be the connecting city. a couple of pages out of their timetable An old Alaska Airlines ticket jacket from 1990 And, from the same era, a Horizon Air ticket jacket from 1989. This was a flight that I was on from Victoria (YYJ) to Seattle (SEA). As I recall, the plane was a small 19 passenger Fairchild Swearingen Metro III, which Horizon had several of back in the day. Lastly, an AirCal Seattle timetable from 1986, which I believe is about 1 year prior to AirCal being absorbed into American Airlines. They weren't a bad little airline. I flew on them one time from Oakland to Seattle back in 1982 on a first generation 737-200 series.
