The flagship theme for May & June is "Ferry Artistry". You're probably wondering what that means. I don't have a hard and fast definition for it, but I do have some ideas of what I think ferry artistry could look like, inspired by photos I've seen here in the past, and a few that I have taken myself. So, here are some loose definitions of what could qualify as ferry artistry:
> a peek-a-boo view of a ferry behind some landscape feature where that feature is just as prominent, if not more, than the ferry itself. This thought was inspired by a photo I saw on the Forum awhile ago that was taken from Newcastle Island showing the funnel of a C-Class ship behind the island. The funnel was all you could see of the ferry. I think Low Light Mike might have taken that one, but it is a very cool, artistic, shot.
> A unique aspect of the ferry itself - maybe a shot of something we don't normally photograph
> A stylized aspect of the ferry, like an interior shot of the seating, for example, that plays off light, or some interesting aspect of the scene. Maybe you run through one or more Photoshop filters to make it more visually interesting; not sure exactly what that would look like, but that's where your creativity comes into play.
> A ferry drawing or model - not a photograph at all. It would have to be your own work, but if you've drawn a ferry, painted one, or modeled one, either physically, or in a program like Sketchup; any of those would certainly qualify.
> A part of a ferry in a really beautiful scene, like a sunset or sunrise. I know we've done sunrises and sunsets before, so I'm not necessarily looking to reproduce that theme, but maybe a silhouette of the railing with the beautiful scene behind it, or part of the ferry with the beautiful scenery; something other than the whole ferry in the photograph.
What I don't want to see is our typical photo showing the entire vessel, unless it's been drawn, painted, or modeled - I will accept those. While I know those photos can be beautiful, and even artistic, we do that all of the time. What I am looking for here is a bit of creativity to go beyond what we normally do, and to find inspiration in unique aspects of the ferry world. I realize that's kind of hard to define, so I'm going to be pretty lenient on what is accepted because it isn't well defined. I also know we have some very talented photographers and artists in our Forum, and I, for one, am really looking forward to see what you all come up with. It's a challenge - a challenge to think outside the box and let your creative juices flow.
Oh, and any ferry in the world is eligible. I'm not going to restrict that. So, have some fun with this. It should be interesting.
You may submit up to three (3) photos.
Usual size restrictions apply. For further information, please see our Forum Flagship rules, located here.
Nominations will end on Sunday, April 28th at 6:00pm PDT. Voting will commence shortly thereafter.
