MV Hiyu

There are no routes that suit the Hiyu. It's too small and too slow. Well WSF should retire the Hiyu, or are they waiting for her to turn 60?

Hello! I'm new to this forum and very glad I found it as I LOVE sailing on the WSF and am fascinated by them! So does anyone by chance know where the MV Tokitae will start service? I'm guessing it would've been posted here already but maybe I missed it? Will Tokitae go to Mukilteo/Clinton? Anacortes/San Juans? Seattle/Bremerton? Fauntleroy/Vashon? I sure wish WSDOT would post some new photos of her and update their Flickr album on her as there are some great photos here! The Tokitae will be in service in January 2014 they still haven't decided on which route it be on.

San Juans: Elwha, Hyak, Yakima, Chelan Backup: Sealth, Kaleetan Inter Island: Evergreen State/Sealth Anacortes-Sidney(BC): Chelan Port Townsend-Coupeville: Kennewick, Salish Mukilteo-Clinton: Tokitae, Kittitas/Cathlamet Edmonds-Kingston: Puyallup/Walla Walla, Spokane/Walla Walla, Hiyu/Sealth Seattle-Bainbridge: Wenatchee/Puyallup, Tacoma/Puyallup Seattle-Bremerton: Walla Walla/Kaleetan, Kitsap/Kaleetan Backup: Sealth Faunteroy-Vashon-Southworth: Issaquah, Klahowya, Tillikum Backup: Sealth Point Defiance-Tahlequah: Chetzemoka Backup: Sealth, Salish, or Hiyu Standby: Sealth/Hiyu, Kitsap/Kaleetan

I think that Washington State Ferries should just find a route that best suits the Hiyu. Like maybr a third boat on the Kingston run, or some other run that has an available slip for it to park in at night.

Well I was trying to say if the Salish was on the Seattle-Bremerton and if breaks down, will it be a 1 boat schedule, or will the Hiyu cover the Salish if there are no other boats available. At Bremerton? One would suspect that the Hiyu would go to Pt Defiance/Tahlequah and the Chetzemoka would be bumped to Bremerton/Seattle... That makes more sense. The Chetzemoka is bigger and faster.

I'd say that's the most likely scenario, yes. Well I was trying to say if the Salish was on the Seattle-Bremerton and if breaks down, will it be a 1 boat schedule, or will the Hiyu cover the Salish if there are no other boats available.

So since the Salish is up in Port Townsend-Coupeville(Keystone), if a boat breaks, will they use the Salish, or Hiyu. I bet if the Salish breaks they would use the Hiyu.

I noticed that the Cathlamet's stack pipes are taller than the other Issaquah boats. Why are the pipes taller?

I guess the described boat is a mystery. I must say the Safe Passage does not look as bad a I thought it, which of course is not a reflection of how well it may have worked. So, we know the KdT design does not work well, I think they ought to be sold off. How about we try to "design" a concept of one here using our knowledge and intentions. Here is my criteria, feel free to add to it: Length 270-280 feet Width 72-76 feet 7 lanes Center divider/stairway, 3 lanes on one side, 4 on other 80 + Cars 500 Passengers 11 foot Draft Rudder and Propeller protected with Skeg Reduction Gear Drive 4 stroke Diesel (x2) Power Controllable Pitch Propellers Passenger Space set inward from rail for outside narrow passenger walkways I know this feels a lot like a Steel Electric, however, only in approximate size, this boat would be a simpler and less expensive Vessel to build and operate. I'd draw one up, if I knew how, let's see what you can do. I still vote for the State also buy an extended SteilacoomII for a replacement for the Hiyu, a spare, and for use at PD/T and summer at Keystone. Ferrynut has a great drawing he did for us here on Lummi Island when we thought we might have to run to Bellingham. It's a 276 foot 72 car version with a single pilot house, looks absolutely wonderful. because it has a smaller Passenger Space, the stairs are farther inward, which would facilitate better Inter-Island Spin. Maybe he will post the drawing. Jim Well there still has to be more room for the passengers. Heck, the KdTs have room for 750 passengers, if you are to increase the amount of cars, you should increase the amount of passengers, basically, the bigger the boat the bigger the passenger cabin. Also it's the Pacific Northwest, so the walk on passengers need some area to be if it rains(which about 60% of the time it does) so they don't get wet, also Port Townsend-Coupeville (Keystone) route gets some waves that come over the bow, and nobody whats to be outside during that!

Anyone been up on the new Ferries wheel in Seattle on the waterfront?? I bet that would be a good place to get photos of the Seattle boats! Yes, I got a great shot of the Wenatchee up there in February. I just haven't posted them yet. I will post them later today, they are on my laptop and I don't want to turn it on at 1:15 am.

Is there even any talk or thought of making the Sealth carry 124 cars like her sisters?

It looks like the Sealth is going to the San Juans to replace the Yakima and the Salish is heading to Vashon. I guess we needed one breakdown/boat swap before the return of the Walla Walla: Beginning Tuesday, Apr. 9, the 64-car Salish will service the F/V/SW route while the 90-car Sealth returns to the San Juan Islands to temporarily replace the Yakima. The three-boat weekday schedule will continue to be in effect. Please plan for additional wait times during the morning and afternoon commutes due to the decrease in vessel capacity. It also looks like the Hyak is having some difficulties. I saw her at Vigor next to the Tokitae earlier today. She was supposed to be replacing the Kaleetan at Bremerton after her drydock time to allow fro the Kaleetan to go in the yard, but that does not seem to be the case. Well, at least the Walla Walla can take her place when she comes into service!

Not sure when they moved...perhaps during their rebuilds when they added the 2nd car deck. I found a picture of Kittitas with the same setup moored alongside Colman dock: The older pics of the issaquahs on evergreen fleet's page shows different rescue boat davits on the pickle fork (ala Evergreen class). Something tells me the original locations were probably pretty problematic. S Wheres the exhaust pipe all i see is a funnel

Why don't they allow anyone on the top deck of the Issaquah class? I checked the other pages and I can't find it.

Why don't they allow access up on the upper deck on the Issaquahs, I looked at all the Issaquah classes pages and I can't find it.

500th post! Not that I'm aware of, but both Jumbos, the Supers (although not sure about the Elwha), and the Issaquahs have been there. The Tilikum was the only E-State (I think) that has run that route and as you know the Salish was the sole KdT that has ever served that route - and docked at Bremerton. I remember that one day I was looking at vessel watch like 4 yrs. ago and saw the Elwha working in Seattle and Bremerton. I rode the Salish when it was in town and it was so slow it took like 70-90 minutes to get from Bremerton to Seattle I also know one weekend the Evergreen State was on the Seattle- Bremerton route in 2000 because of a boat (I don't remember which one had a emergency maintenance).
