Originally, the amidships “bump out” was envisioned to create more sun deck space and an expanded amidships lounge & gift shop areas below in the passenger cabin overlooking the water. In afterthought, it might not be a good idea from a maintenance perspective as it is a bit radical and would probably cause complications financially and physically for WSF crews to clean the windows but I would like to see a ferry with a year round gift shop so I will have to update this design with a relocated gift shop area. I think I will remove that middle “bump out” back to a traditional WSF amidships design.

Hello,
After browsing through the new 2040 plan proposal, I thought it would be fun to share my idea for the state’s next class of ferry. I thought here might be a good place to do that.
Now while the state wants to continue building 144’s and is apparently researching building more 202 car, Jumbo Mark II’s, I’ve wondered if perhaps a class of ferry in-between the two might work? I’m currently looking into following a career in naval architecture and this is my concept for what I call the “172 Auto ferry” or I guess could be called the “Jumbo Mark III” class ferry perhaps? I came up with this design a couple years ago but never finished it as you will see the design is missing many things like bow anchors and such which I haven’t yet added. As you will notice the ratio of car capacity to vessel size is probably not the most realistic but this design started out as more of an exterior design study for my portfolio but I am now drawing up more realistic designs.
This 172 design concept is based on the original Jumbo’s and I envision would be direct replacements for the Walla Walla & Spokane. The current design is about 440 feet in length and would carry about 1,700 passengers. On the top decks, I enclosed and modernized the bridges and added a wrap around sun deck promenade with sun deck level cafeteria like on the Super Class which I think would make for a really fun & attractive ferry to ride. While I figure that the state won’t be building anything like this anytime soon, it’s fun to imagine what a new large ferry might look like after the completion of the Olympic class ferries. Hope you all enjoy.

I think WSF should have an open ship sailing where you can check out the ship while it's underway. That would be cool. An open ship sailing would be awesome! I’ve always thought that WSF should have “Maiden Voyage” events where they sell tickets or something to sail on the boat's first commercial voyage across the sound. Save

Perhaps the Kalakala could be recycled into one of the new state ferries? Then she could live on as a new state ferry. They could maybe put some of her metal into the new Chimacum? I don't know if that would be possible but that would be really cool considering Kalakala was a recycled ship from the start and Chimacum may be put on the Bremerton run just like the Kalakala.

Did you get a chance to test the ramps up to the gallery deck by chance or get a feel for them in terms of steep angle? No, not yet but I did stay on the car deck for a while and watched them load the cars and the ramps sure are sharp at the top! Several trucks/SUVs came very close to scraping. I have relatives who commute daily on Tokitae with a Chevy Equinox and they have had issues. I will have to keep up with them on it. Anyone have any idea on how the ramps will be fixed?

I sailed on Tokitae several times over the weekend. I drove on and walked on. From my experience she is doing great so far! I can't believe how smooth she sails, by far the most comfortable ferry I've ever been on. She didn't rock or shudder once on every crossing, it was hard to believe. I've never been on a ferry so stable. Perhaps, I just got lucky with calm waters? The only thing I have on Tokitae is that there doesn't seem to be proper A/C or ventilation in the passenger cabin. Every time I went above, the cabin seemed warm and stuffy. Does the ship even have an A/C system? The crew had the cabin doors open so I wonder if perhaps the warm air blowing in impeded the A/C? Other than that she seems perfectly fine. I attended a family reunion on Whidbey and everyone who arrived on her boasted about how wonderful she is. I can already tell when Samish hits the San Juans it's going to be awesome! Tokitae in Clinton by Theo Anderson Photography, on Flickr

For those who missed it, Wenatchee looked awesome during the Maritime Festival on Saturday. She looked as if she could have been part of the festivities! Wenatchee by Theo Anderson Photography, on Flickr

Looks like Samish is finally getting paint. I attended the Maritime Festival over the weekend and noticed the Royal Argosy sailed right in front of the Tokitae & Samish. Tokitae & Samish on May 10th: A Royal visit by Theo Anderson Photography, on Flickr

Here is the footage I got, I hope it shows up. There were complications & delays in putting up the launch structure so I was able to get footage of them finishing it before the roll out. I like the fact they did a night roll out because if not only added different scenery compared to Tokitae's roll out but was REALLY cool in general! I didn't realize the ship was that massive!!! It was quite impressive. Thankfully this morning, the thick fog and rain finally cleared right before the Samish went by my Aunt's house allowing me to get some great footage!

Hi everyone, The weather turned out great this afternoon and I got great shots of the Samish passing through the Saratoga passage. She passed just in time for the Victoria Clipper IV to pass by right when I was taking a video, turned out fantastic except when my camera died right before they passed each other! It would have been a great shot. Anyways, I got tons of video of the roll out and sail by so I will be posting that on Youtube soon. Samish Saratoga Passage 1 by Theo Anderson 23, on Flickr

Hello all, I couldn’t find the introduction area so I guess I’ll introduce myself briefly here. My name is Theo Anderson, I am 18 years old and I am a huge Washington state ferry enthusiast! Anyways, I attended the roll out of the Samish yesterday until late in the evening. The Samish was officially rolled out last night on Dec 21st and was scheduled to be taken to Vigor this early this morning around 6am according to one of the project directors but Samish & the Maiah H tug appear to still be in Holmes Harbor as of 3pm today. I am currently staying at a relative’s on Whidbey Island who lives directly across from Hat Island and she hasn’t passed yet. The Maiah tug keeps going on and offline & the other tug appears to have gone dark for some reason on the ship tracker website. It is very foggy so i wonder if that affects the departure? M.V.
