Yes we have had a White Christmas here on the inner North Coast. Perhaps we will have a White Easter also. My house this evening after another 40 cm falling in the last 24 hours... We didn't get a white Christmas this year, but we did get a white Boxing Day, though this far south of the border people look at you crosseyed and scratch their heads when you mention Boxing Day. Our first blizzard (and our first significant snowfall when you exclude the 1/4" we got last week which paralyzed Philly for hours ;D) of the season dumped about 12" (30cm) at our house, though east and north of us got 30" plus (80cm plus). The snow will likely be gone before next week though as the temperatures are forecast to rise to 50F (9C) or so with rain.

ooh that looks so nice like a winter wonderland! I would love to have that much snow especially over the holidays. For me a White Christmas would be perfect just how Christmas should be. Maybe I will have to move north!

Ah you just wish you were back into restoration with all the flooding you are going to get around there BCinNJ. Na...most people (i.e. builders) here don't understand drainage and water seepage control, so most peoples' basements are in a constant state of "flood" and unusable as finished living space anyways. I'm constantly shaking my head and muttering, "idiots" while trying to explain the most simple concepts of water management.

The snow has not gone away here yet! In fact for the last two days we have been enjoying near blizzard conditions with temperatures around -10 to -15 oC, very strong northerly 'outflow' winds and ~50 cm of new snow. Its hard to judge how much has fallen as it blows into deep drifts in some place and a few feet away there is nothing. Clicking on the photo shown below will open a video on my Flickr site. It shows a District of Kitimat snow blower cleaning the street in front of my house. You will be able to see that they get rid of the snow by depositing it on my front lawn. I now have an average depth of snow there in excess of 1.5 metres (~5 feet). BTW, snow clearing on residential streets here (such as the one I live on) is a three step process. First a grader passes along one side of the street windrowing snow to the centre of the road. A while later the grader returns, this time on the opposite side of the road. The windrow in the centre of the road can be 1.5 m high by 1.5 m wide. Then some time later the blower comes. These are big machines and can blow snow a long distance (50+ metres) away. In the past they have taken out windows in people's houses (although that is rare). They used to use two person blowers - one to drive and the other to run the blower. The old machines were very loud and have all been retired. I saw one of the same type of old blowers in use at the Cypress Ski area on Vancouver's North Shore a few winters ago. The weather has been quite severe on the north and central coasts both in coastal and inland areas. I think I know why they cancelled this weekend's Nimpkish sailing.

:)just tuned in and was going to email wettcoast/whitecoast and see if my global report was rite and you were to get a real white dump while we were to get your wett stuff! I like all the book reviews, as they remind me of all the titles that are living with me in this retirement ships locker of mine. It's nice to revert from electronic medium to the old hard copy! and listen to the rythem of the pounding rain! :)mrdot.

We have had 40 or 50 cm of new damp snow here today. The power went out at about 6 PM, and is still out. I suspect a tree laden with heavy snow was the culprit.
To send this post I am on a lap top and am connecting to the internet via a Telus cellular internet USB device. It works.
My snow blower works with or without BC Hydro and it has had a workout today.
Cheers everyone!

Must be easy taking the Christmas lights down from the outside of your house. Some people have to get up on the ladder; you guys just put on your snowshoes, and reach up a bit...

Update: The snow ended over night with a total fall of 50 cm. That on top of the 60 cm in the back yard, and up to 200+ cm in the front yard.
Power outages = two. The first one started with about 5 minutes left in the Super Bore game. That left a lot of sports fans in dire straits. At about 10:20 the lights came back on, and then went off again just after midnight. The second outage ended at about 6:30 this morning. My son was happy as he got a snow day off from school (There was no heat in the buildings).
The weather has now settled and we are supposed to get a sunny day or two. The avalanche risk must be extreme.

For the first time in many many years, we have actually had a covering of snow on the ground, since shortly after Christmas. But not as much as you on the north coast! Snow has become unusual enough here that a potential storm brings out the "all news all the time" media blitz of snowmagedon. Of course it is never as bad as they say. They actually closed the schools last week for the non-event!
All I can say is where were these wimps when I was in school. Growing up in Burnaby with steep hills a factor, I was used to schools closing with very little snow. Our passtime on those days was watching cars either attempt to get up the hill or watch cars slide down the hill, with the bets whether they would reach the Lougheed Highway or not. Moving here the schools hardly ever closed.
The temp is all over the map as usual though with 1C on the weekend to -15C right now as I type.

Maple Ridge is receiving its first 2011/2012 snow dump tonight. It's visible on the DriveBC webcam at the Pitt River Bridge, and at the webcam location it's just starting to stick. At my place it's been snowing since around 14:00, sticking for about a half-hour now, and we'll have a good six inches by morning if it keeps falling like this.
Here's the webcam: images.drivebc.ca/bchighwaycam/pub/html/dbc/192.html
Later edit: Here are a couple photos I just took. Nothing special, but it shows what's needed:

Yes we have snow on the White Coast; about 15 cm on my front lawn. So far we have had 5 small snow falls which have mostly melted away. They are saying that another winter just like the last is 'our gift' this year.
Mid November and BC already has its first snowmobile avalanche fatality. Not a good start!

I had to take my g/f to Nanaimo today to write and exam and when we left this afternoon around 1pm it was snowing like crazy on the north side of Nanaimo but then down towards Departure Bay there was nothing, lol! It was crazy! Victoria has nothing and there is a little trace of snow on the Malahat on the trees.
