It's that time of year again, where graham does anything to get a photo. Campbell River-Quadra Island: Temporary Vessel ReplacementTemporary Replacement VesselPosted September 11, 2006Effective Sunday, September 17, with the 6:15 am sailing from Quadra Island, the Bowen Queen will temporarily replace the Powell River Queen on the Quadra Island/Campbell River route. The Powell River Queen will leave the route for two weeks to undergo temporary repairs to the car deck. Customers are reminded that while both vessels have the same overall vehicle capacity, the amount of over height space is reduced on the Bowen Queen. Drivers of over height vehicles should arrive at the terminal early, and if possible avoid peak traffic periods. The Bowen Queen will remain in service on the route until the Powell River Queen returns, which is expected to be September 30.

The Bowen Queen will remain in service on the route until the Powell River Queen returns, which is expected to be September 30. It's almost seems as if BCFS is trying to make things more difficult, in this case for people with motorhomes that BCFS even publically predicted, returning from a tournament (I'm assuming that the traffic mentioned probably has something to do with the tourney on Quadra)... " Expect Heavy Traffic Posted September 12, 2006
September 13A high volume of traffic is expected on Wednesday, September 13 with two large groups of motor homes traveling that day. Heavy traffic periods are most likely to occur on the 6:30 am, 8:25 am, 12:20 pm and 4:25 pm sailings from Earls Cove. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead, travel outside of peak times, and arrive at the terminal early for their desired sailing. BC Ferries thanks our customers for your cooperation and patience when traveling during this especially busy time period." " Expect Heavy Traffic Posted September 12, 2006
September 14 & 15A high volume of traffic is expected on Thursday, September 14 and Friday, September 15, with two large groups of motor homes traveling on those days. Heavy traffic periods are most likely to occur on the 8:10 am sailing on September 14 and the noon sailing on September 15, from Powell River. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead, travel outside of peak times, and arrive at the terminal early for their desired sailing. BC Ferries thanks our customers for your cooperation and patience when traveling during this especially busy time period." " Heavy Traffic Expected Posted September 12, 2006
September 14 - 17A 22-team slow pitch tournament is being held on Quadra Island from Friday, September 15 to Sunday, September 17. Due to the high volume of traffic expected for this event, two to three sailing waits are possible throughout the weekend on this 10-minute run for departures from Campbell River terminal to Quathiaski Cove. Heavy traffic is expected to start on Thursday, September 14, with the 3:30 pm sailing from Campbell River, and continue to the end of the service day and into the weekend. On Sunday, September 17, the players and their supporters will be leaving Quadra to return home. As a result, delays can be expected for sailings departing Quathiaski Cove over much of the service day. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and consider traveling on their bikes, as foot passengers, or earlier in the day to avoid delays."

Berth Closures September - June
Posted September 13, 2006
Horseshoe Bay TerminalThere will be a major upgrade of Berth one and Berth two at Horseshoe Bay terminal starting mid September with completion scheduled for June, 2007. The project will prepare the berths for the arrival of the new Super C-class vessels later in 2007. The work includes demolition of some old marine structures, modifying wing walls, constructing new dolphins, increasing the travel capability of the foot passenger gangway, building a new flow deflector wall adjacent to Sewell’s Marina, and upgrading the electrical sub-station feeding the berths with shore power. Throughout the project, there will be berth closures resulting in different unloading and loading patterns for Horseshoe Bay customers. Delays may occur at peak sailing times. Berth two is scheduled to be closed first, followed by Berth one. BC Ferries appreciates the patience of our customers as we work to upgrade infrastructure at our terminals. Departure Bay TerminalThere will be a major upgrade of Berth two and Berth three at Departure Bay terminal starting mid September with completion scheduled for June, 2007. The project will prepare the berths for the arrival of the new Super C-class vessels later in 2007. The work includes demolition of some old marine structures, modifying wing walls and some dolphins, adding a service wharf in Berth two to permit independent vessel storing through a side door and upgrading the electrical sub-station to feed the berths with shore power. The Berth two ramp will be upgraded by converting it to full active lift hydraulics and installing a new double lane upper ramp. Throughout the project, there will be berth closures resulting in different unloading and loading patterns for Departure Bay customers. Berth two is scheduled to be closed first, followed by Berth three. BC Ferries appreciates the patience of our customers as we work to upgrade infrastructure at our terminals.

Time for the Updates Powell River Queen Returns Posted September 28, 2006The Powell River Queen will return to the Quadra/Campbell River route on Saturday, September 30, to resume service effective with the 6:15 am departure from Quathiaski Cove. An update will be provided if there is any change to these plans. Winter Vessel Returns - Oct 2 Posted September 28, 2006On Monday, October 2, the 115-vehicle M.V. Queen of Chilliwack is expected to begin service as the winter vessel on the Saltery Bay – Earls Cove route. The vessel will resume service with the scheduled 5:40 am sailing from Saltery Bay. Updated information will be provided if there is any change to the expected return date of the Queen of Chilliwack. Queen of Cumberland Annual Refit, October 5 - 27 Posted September 28, 2006 Bowen Queen Temporary Replacement VesselThe Queen of Cumberland will be out of service on the Swartz Bay to Southern Gulf Islands route from Thursday, October 5 through Friday, October 27, 2006 for annual refit. The refit is earlier this year to accommodate dry docking, including a complete grit blasting of the hull and upper works of the vessel and application of a new coating system. This essential work cannot be completed in the usual mid-winter timeframe due to weather constraints. During the refit the Bowen Queen will be the replacement vessel. Because this is a smaller vessel than the Queen of Cumberland overloads and delays are expected at peak sailing times. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead, if possible travel outside of peak sailing times, or arrive at the terminal early for their desired sailing. Car pooling may be an option for some customers. To encourage car pooling and foot passenger travel during the refit period, BC Ferries is offering free parking at Swartz Bay. To be eligible for the parking offer, Southern Gulf Island customers must register in advance at the Swartz Bay administration office. Customers must bring proof of residency on the Southern Gulf Islands to be eligible for the special parking offer. The Mayne Queen will provide an additional sailing to and from Otter Bay (Pender Island) on Thursday, October 5; Friday, October 6; Monday, October 9; and Tuesday, October 10 as follows: Leave Swartz Bay: 12:40 p.m. Arrive Otter Bay: 1:20 p.m. Leave Otter Bay: 1:30 p.m. Arrive Swartz Bay: 2:10 p.m. Commercial customers please note that vehicles over 10 tonnes GVW (10,000 kg) are restricted to centre lane loading only on the Bowen Queen and Mayne Queen. This means there will also be reduced capacity for commercial vehicles traveling between Swartz Bay and the Southern Gulf Islands while the Queen of Cumberland is in refit. Food service will be available on the Bowen Queen during the refit period. BC Ferries looks forward to returning the Queen of Cumberland to service on the Southern Gulf Islands route on Saturday, October 28. Expect Delays Posted September 29, 2006 Saltery Bay - LangdaleStarting Thursday, September 28, the water mains at Davis Bay are being replaced. Maintenance crews will be working on this project Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm (excluding statutory holidays). All traffic connecting between Langdale, Earls Cove and Saltery Bay will be affected, as this work is expected to result in delays of 30 to 45 minutes along the Sunshine Coast highway over the next two months. Between September 28 and November 28, passengers are advised to expect possible traffic delays on Hwy 101 and allow additional time to make their desired sailing. Updated information will be provided if there are any changes to the status of this project.
That is All.

The QUeen of New Westminster is experiencing an electrical problem and has been temporarily removed from service.
The Queen of Vancouver will sail in place of the Queen of New Westminster until our engineers determine the problem and facilitate repairs.
The Queen of Vancouver will depart Tsawwassen at approximately 11:15 am --- one hour later than the Queen of New Westminster was scheduled to depart.
As the Queen of Vancouver is a slightly slower vessel, it will run off schedule.
The Queen of Alberni, the other vessel operating on the route, continues to operate on schedule.
A further update will be provided when more information is available.
Maybe a late night if the Vancouver does three round trips.

And now we're seeing the effect of this in the two vessels on the route bunching up. This image captured from 2:09pm, just after the Queen of Vancouver left Duke Point terminal, shows the Queen of Alberni fast approching from Tsawwassen terminal

...And they certainly aren't doing all they can to getting things back on track for the many people delayed by the Queen of New Westminster's problems; after checking back a few times, I haven't seen the Queen of Vancouver pushed beyond 17.7knots.

It would be kinda hard for the Cowichan to do a round trip on Route 30 from the Drydock in Vancouver.

It looks according to the CC the Queen of Vancouver arrived at Duke Point at 7:07pm and isent sailing till 10:45pm. Looks like she would of been floating around for a bit in order to let the Alberni in at 7:45pm. I think I see something in the dock at Duke Point according to the webcam.

The Sannich did a MDS at 4pm from Swartz today, probably to get some of the commercial traffic backed up.

I want to know why in the world has the Queen of Capilano not been going to refit. It's a sister ship to the Queen of Cumberland and I don't even the last time there was a ship that was on the Bowen route except for the Queen of Capilano. Isn't it over due for refit. Does any one know when it's last one was?

The Capilano's last refit was in January of 2004. This was the refit which put her in the new BCF colours. Her replacement at the time, was the Bowen Queen. I remember this, because I was coming in on route 2, Queen of Oak Bay one afternoon, I watched the Capilano sail from the Spanish Banks, to Horseshoe Bay. Overdue? Most likely. She's still having RAD problems, and she's looking a little rough around the edges, with the paintjob. My prediction is, she'll be out for refit this January, hopefully.

The Queen of Vancouver is at Tsawwassen in berth 2. The Queen of Cowichan is at Deas in refit. The Queen of Cumberland is in the Esquimalt Drydock right now along with the Queen of Saanich. The Cumberland dosent run out of TSA she runs out of Swartz Bay.
