yeah, or if they were ACTUALLY SMART ENOUGH TO MAKE THE SUPER C'S SPIRIT SIZED!! Gawd. That is my rant for today. Why on earth did they have to make them just 370 cars? Why not 420 or something like that.

I have one word to add to that and it is the reason "money". If BCFS was subsidized more, that would have left room for more money to be spent on the new vessels, heck, you might as well buy the cats and sell em for scrap. The value of that is probably about 100 mil for all three or more?

They probably would of made them larger, but I don't think there's a real need for it. In the off season, it's pretty quiet. So what if they need an extra boat for two days over the long weekend. That's cheaper than paying for the fuel to run the engines that push the Ferries around, because the bigger they are, they more fuel they need. Logical explanation there.

So then what do you do about the Route 2 having more demand than Route 1? Use the same vessels? I do not believe that is a very good solution. If BCFS wants to accomadate more, they need to build bigger vessels so that they do not have to keep giving crew OT.

Two Super C's will be the primary ships on Route 2, plus a regular C at peak times. If each of those Ferries are full, after each one has left the terminal once, that means they have taken 1080 vehicles. Compare that to the current summer seasons, with 3 C's on the route, which turns out to be 1020. Doesn't seem like alot, but that's 60 more cars that got on, and 60 less cars that will sit in the lot. We don't need to bring out like 10 Ferries to run on Route 2, which will sail to the mainland every 10 minutes, to have absolutely no sailing waits, when a 1 or more sailing wait occurs.
BC Ferries has been doing the occasional OT sailing during the night, since they've been created. Whether we like it or not, there's going to be waits.

The SOVI will be out next Tuesday and the Saanich will be replacing it. A Tuesday night the SOVI usually wouldent be full, but I bet the Saanich will be. 80% full on the SOVI is probably like 100% full on the Saanich.

Well it looks like the SOVI is still running today as they have cancelled whatever they were doing on the SOVI today cause of the below zero temps I would assume the snow and cold has something to do with it. So the SOVI is running today. The Mill Bay ferry is about 23 mins behind due to the crew having to manually operate the ramps due to the power outages. Also the Chilliwack is having mechanical problems. Our ferries arent used to the cold and snow! Sunday there were 3 sailing waits for the Mill Bay Ferry!

Wow... of all the ships, you would think the Chilliwack would be used to the cold weather considering where she came from! Well, if the straight freezes over, at least we have one ship that can at least break ice! LOL….

Mayne Queen Refit: Dec. 5 - Jan. 26 Posted December 01, 2006 Swartz Bay - Southern Gulf Islands
On Tuesday, December 5th, the Mayne Queen will be removed from service to undergo a regular refit. This refit will involve large-scale engine work, exterior and interior painting and updated passenger signage.
During this time, BC Ferries is pleased to supply the Bowen Queen as the replacement vessel for sailings between Swartz Bay and the Southern Gulf Islands.
All sailings will remain as scheduled.
BC Ferries looks forward to returning the Mayne Queen to service on January 26, 2007.

Why in the world did they make such an earlier service notice than the Queen of Alberni mid life refit and there is no difference in vehicle size on the Mayne Queen and Bowen Queen

Because they're doing fairly significant modifications to the Mayne Queen, and will probably make her pretty much identical to the Bowen Queen, interior wise. Which means they will get rid of the carpet, and install the new blue linoleum. BC Ferries likes to announce these kind of modifications, and it gives the regular riders the heads up with the vessel change, plus it keeps us Ferry Geeks up to speed with current vessel placements.

Service Notices - Tsawwassen-Southern Gulf Islands
Otter Bay Service Disruption Posted November 24, 2006 Otter Bay Terminal

During the closure, the following sailing will not be available:
Tsawwassen – Otter Bay · December 5th & 6th, 10:10 am sailing

Queen of Capilano Refit, February 19 - April 5 Posted December 05, 2006
The Queen of Capilano will be out of service on the Bowen Island route from February 19 through April 5, 2007 for a refit and installation of a new propulsion system.
For this time period, the Bowen Queen will be the replacement vessel. Because this is a smaller vessel than the Queen of Capilano overloads are expected during commuter sailings. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead, if possible travel outside of peak sailing times, or arrive at the terminal early for their desired sailing. Car pooling may be an option for some customers.
The Bowen Queen has a 70 car capacity and a 400 maximum passenger and crew license compared to an 85 car capacity and a 457 maximum passenger and crew license on the Queen of Capilano.
Commercial customers please note that vehicles over 10 tonnes GVW (10,000 kg) are restricted to centre lane loading only on the Bowen Queen. This means that there will be reduced capacity for commercial vehicles traveling between Horseshoe Bay and Snug Cove while the Queen of Capilano is in refit.
Food service will be available on the Bowen Queen during the refit period.
BC Ferries looks forward to returning the Queen of Capilano to service on the Bowen Island route on Friday, April 6, 2007.
It looks like the Cap will be getting her refit!

Finally! The Cappie will get her much needed refit, seeming the last one was in January 2004. Also, intereting how they've posted the notice over 2 months in advance.....

They're probably giving the advance heads- up for those commuters who might be able to adjust their work hours, as there's going to be people regularly left behind at peak times for the six weeks the Capilano is out. The commercial traffic might also have to adjust their schedules.

I hope they give her a nice new paint job too! She's looking a little rusty these days. If they do paint, will strip off the old, or just go over? Does anybody know what decides these things?

With these annual refits they give the Ferries now, they usually just grind the rust off, and touch up the paint. They don't usually paint any more than they have to.

re Nimpkish:
That's great timing for a Island ferry nerd like me....right during my week-off between Christmas & New Years.
I'm thinking about using that for a nice day trip.

I'll go, if we can get a carpool together, and head up there, and manage to return home by the evening of the same day. Otherwise, I don't really feel like spending the money to drive up there alone.
