Graham will be happy to know, that he will have access to the Saltspring-Crofton, and Chemainus-Thetis-Kuper Island routes, as BC Transit is opening up a new route, effective September 5th. The Cowichan Valley Regional Transit System is introducing a new bus route connecting Chemainus, Crofton and Duncan effective Tuesday, September 5.
Southbound buses to Duncan are scheduled to connect with ferries arriving from Thetis and Kuper Islands at Chemainus and Salt Spring Island at Crofton. Northbound buses will connect with ferries departing to the islands.
There will be four round trips Monday to Friday with an extra run on Friday night. There will be three round trips on Saturday.
For complete transit information visit www.busonline.ca or call 250 746-9899.www.bcferries.com/schedules/notices/notice08280602.html

Now how long till SSI gets public transit.
If Bowen Island can have it, why not? According to Wikipedia, Bowen has about 3000 residents, whereas SSI has over 9000.

But Bowen Island just so happens to be part of the GVRD (Greater Vancouver Regional District), who's GVTA (Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority) has a far stronger mandate to make such improvements within its boundaries. In fact, recently when transit was expanded to Lions Bay from 3 peak-hour-only conventional busses to those plus all-week all-day community shuttles (so called mini-busses), the fare-zone boundary was pushed out to include these areas in zone 2 instead of zone 3 as before (Vancouver is zone 1, and the 2 other zones encircle it like bull's-eye), saving transit users between $1 and $1.25 per trip to or from Bowen Island / Lions Bay.

According to Wikipedia, Bowen has about 3000 residents, whereas SSI has over 9000. re Salt Spring Island: - I think that SSI, and other Gulf Islands have other community based transport initiatives that some are trying: such as bike sharing and car sharing, as well as maybe a more successful time of hitchhiking. - I'm not being sarcastic here, I really think that these islands are looking at local transport solutions other than conventional transit. Of course, I don't live there, and that's just opinion, based on things I've read in local Gulf Islands newspapers and seen on community hall bulletin boards. Logistically, the island is likely too small to have economies of scale re a transit bus yard (the facility that repairs & maintains the buses), and so this would likely make conventional transit unfeasible too. TsawwasenTerminator has already commented on GVTA re other local authorities in their initiatives. I don't know how important SSI transit would be to the Capital Regional District. Re the "Where", the logical bus routes for SSI would likely be some looping runs around the Island, especially connecting downtown Ganges to Fulford ferry terminal, and connecting Fernwood to Ganges.

on saltspring there is already a shuttle bus service that you can call and book to pick you up at any of the 3 terminals. a regular bus service was tried about 10 yrs ago and did not work out. i believe that because of the size of saltspring and how the population is spread out that transit would not really work. it would be very highly subsidized by other routes in the victoria transit system

they had used small buses about the size of a small 20 passenger school bus at the time. the current company, gangesfaerie.com, uses 12 and 15 passenger vans and seem to be fairly busy in the summer.

Was the Saltspring service of ten years ago a proper, subsidised, public transit service? If they can do it on Bowen, I can't understand why it wouldn't work on Saltspring.

Also Bowen Island is widely considered far more of a bedroom community to Vancouver than SSI is to Victoria. The Ganges Faerie MiniShuttle does seem to meet the needs of many travellers, acting much like Translink's "Community Shuttles," except for the fact that it's only one vehicle (as far as I know), and on-demand instead of scheduled. You can find their website here:www.gangesfaerie.comHere is their service area (red dot to red dot):
