I'm planning to be on the Alberni 3:15 from Duke Point, so I'm hoping for an exciting ride:)

This was an item tonight on atleast CTV's local news broadcast. Though our Queen of Plastic spokesperson, Marshall/Dykes, reasured that surely "they're being given complimentary meals," the story started with mention of passengers being forced to stay aboard for the "12 hour" delay "north of Bella Bella" due to "oil contamination" that officials "don't know how it could have happened".

due to "oil contamination" that officials "don't know how it could have happened". These things do happen, sometimes directly from the manufacturer (refiner). Contamination can also be introduced if, for example, you are fueling your vehicle in the rain and get a lot of water into the tank (and your fuel/water filter/separator is not working correctly or is clogged/full). Oil contamination is usually a larger problem. Anyone mechanically inclined KNOWS how bad it is when you get anti-freeze in your oil -- the why of it and the cost of fixing the underlying problem makes even rich people cringe. Let's hope that is not the case in this adventure!

They may need to get the Rusty old Rupert (QPR) fired up and ready to head north again. It seems that the NorAd is again having some 'issues'.

LOL - maybe it was rust flakes that contaminated the oil. Whatever the case, if it is a case of contaminated lube oil as reported by the local 6-oclock news, then draining, flushing and refilling whatever the lube oil is in should do the trick. Afloat for 12 hours plus? One would think that they have cleaned filters and are working on this. Maybe waiting for a shipment of some new lube oil for the refill.
Depends though too on the cause. As stated -- in terms of a car with antifreeze in your oil - you are calling a hook and sourcing out a new engine all the time while on hold with your bank getting your HELOC extended ....

....re Norad stuck at Bella Bella:
It will be interesting to see how the passengers & their vehicles get to Port Hardy.
Will it be a 24 hour wait, and finally arriving at Port Hardy?
Will they get transferred to Nimpkish at Bella Bella, and then get offloaded at Bella Coola (unlikely, but adventurous)?
Or is this no big deal, similar to a weather delay (other than that this might be the start of another out-of-service period for the ship)?
If they will be delayed for another 24 hours or so (just speculating), I wonder if the passengers could go ashore to Bella Bella and experience some local culture (tours, museums, etc). Too bad it's not at Klemtu, which is more interested in tourism (or at least that's the impression that I got from an old Discovery-Coast brochure).

BC Ferries didn't have enough staff to operate vessel on New Year's Day. Jan, 02 2008 - 4:10 PM VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) - About one-hundred people were turned away from the Galiano ferry on New Year’s Day because BC Ferries didn't have enough staff to operate the vessel. 101 people had to take the long way home after a Galiano to Vancouver ferry was four staff members short. That means the ferry can only carry 750 people instead of 977. Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall says that's a stipulation of the transport Canada licensing system to ensure enough staff in the event of an evacuation. She says a service notice was posted in advance. Passengers weren't happy about a less-than-full ferry sailing away without them, forcing them to come back to Vancouver via Swartz Bay - a costly and time-consuming alternative. ============================= Galiano Island ferry passengers upset about extra long trip to Lower MainlandWednesday, January 02 - 02:20:27 PM Reshmi Nair TSAWWASSEN (NEWS1130) - BC Ferries claims it did all it could for 100 ferry passengers trying to get from Galiano Island to the Lower Mainland, who spent the first day of 2008 stuck on board a ferry vessel for hours. The detour that sent them the wrong way seems to be common procedure for BC Ferries. Instead of going directly to Tsawwassen, the ship carried those customers all the way to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island before backtracking and heading to Tsawwassen on the Mainland. So a trip that should have lasted an hour or so turned into more than four hours for 100 people likely returning from holidays. BC Ferries communications manager Deborah Marshall says "The Queen of Nanaimo was full and we had about a hundred passengers that had to go via Swartz Bay to get back to Tsawwassen." Marshall explains it happened because the corporation has to juggle around what little staff they have during every major holiday. She says they often cannot reach the safety requirements set by Transport Canada that say each vessel must have a certain ratio of staff to passengers. "We knew in advance that we didn't have enough crew to reach the higher licence...to carry the maximum amount of passengers... so we did put out a notice last week advising customers on Galiano Island that if the vessel is full they would have to take a different ship." The BC Ferry and Marine Workers' Union has not officially responded, but News1130 has heard from one staff member who believes BC Ferries just doesn't want to spend the money required to better staff the route.

I wonder if all passengers are still aboard the ship of if they managed to disembark in Bella Bella while the oil issues are being rectified. That's a long time to stay idle on the NorAd. As of now, she's still stopped just south of the Bella Bella terminal: orca.bcferries.com:8080/cc/settings/includes/maps/route13.html

A "time-consuming" alternative yes, but a costly one? It costs the same either way. And the second quote makes it sound like the Queen of Nanaimo went to Swartz Bay and then to Tsawwassen, which I'm sure is completely wrong.

Both the Alberni and Esquimalt are at Tsawwassen right now. Spirit of BC has also cancelled "one sailing" (how do you do that?). And Alliford Bay - Skidegate and Quadra-Cortes are down due to weather.

I'm now hearing from CBC that instead of putting in fresh oil they put in waste oil. BTW passengers were being flown home and some are still aboard with their cars.

Well, apparently the Queen of Esquimalt has cancelled "two sailings" and it's only one round trip. I guess BC Ferries needs to get some consistency in their terminology.

re NorAd:
What if the oil-shutdown had happened 1/2 way through Queen Charlotte Sound?
I think they got lucky, having the engine-shutdown occurring so near to McLoughlin Bay.
