Ferries getting refits in 2008.MV Howe Sound Queen Capital Upgrade Posted November 23, 2007 Monday, December 3 – January 2008 On Monday, December 3 the MV Howe Sound Queen will be removed from service to undergo a capital upgrade—phase two of a project that commenced April 2006. This work is expected to take approximately two months and will involve a major upgrade to the passenger lounge. This upgrade will include new tables, chairs, flooring and drop ceiling as well as new bulkhead linings. The crew accommodation areas will be reconfigured, as well as improved washroom facilities for the public. During this time, BC Ferries is pleased to supply the MV Bowen Queen as the replacement vessel for sailings between Crofton and Vesuvius. Commercial customers are advised that vehicles over 10 tonnes GVW (10,000 kg) are restricted to centre lane loading only on the MV Bowen Queen and available commercial vehicle capacity will be limited. All sailings will remain as scheduled between Crofton and Vesuvius. BC Ferries thanks its customers for their understanding and apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause. Complete schedule information is available at www.bcferries.com or by calling our Customer Service Centre at 1-888-BCFERRY (223-3779) between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm daily. Temporary Replacement Vessel Posted December 20, 2007 From January 2 until approximately June 20, the MV Quinitsa will be removed from service to undergo extensive upgrades. During this period, the temporary replacement vessel will be the MV Kahloke. As the MV Kahloke carries 20 less vehicles than the 50-vehicle carrying MV Quinitsa, commercial vehicles are strongly encouraged to travel at non-peak times. All sailings will remain as scheduled. However, to enhance service, extra sailings may be added and sailing times altered during heavy traffic periods. BC Ferries appreciates your patience during this time and looks forward to the return of the MV Quinitsa. Temporary Vessel Replacement Posted January 02, 2008 The Spirit of Vancouver Island will be removed from service on the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay route from Monday, January 7 through Tuesday, January 22 for regularly scheduled maintenance. The smaller Queen of Saanich will be the temporary replacement for the Spirit vessel. The Spirit of Vancouver Island is scheduled return to service on Wednesday, January 23.

MV Queen of Cumberland Annual Refit Posted January 22, 2008 January 28, 2008
On Monday, January 28, the MV Queen of Cumberland will be removed from service to undergo scheduled maintenance. This work is expected to take approximately one month.
During this time, the MV Bowen Queen will be the replacement vessel for sailings between Swartz Bay and the Southern Gulf Islands. All sailings will remain as scheduled.
As the MV Bowen Queen is a smaller vessel, overloads may occur. Where possible, passengers are encouraged to plan ahead and consider car pooling, travelling outside of peak sailing times and/or arriving at the terminal early for their desired sailing.
Commercial customers are advised that vehicles over 10 tonnes (10,000 kg) GVW are restricted to centre lane loading only on the MV Bowen Queen. As a result, available commercial vehicle capacity will also be reduced while the MV Bowen Queen is in service.
BC Ferries thanks its customers for their understanding and apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

So as posted in the Service Notices thread, the N.I.P will be going in for refit during the summer.
Will her old dogwood carpets and old things from the interior be removed?

I think they have already been removed.
If they haven't, they undoubtedly will. They've pulled it all out of just about every other ship in the fleet.

Does anyone know what other ships havent had any of the old dogwood furniture etc removed? The three V's and Queen of Tsawwassen still have the old carpets and furniture. Except the Saanich had her interior redone to match the way the Spirits were originally laid-out in 1997.

I can confirm from what I know that the NIP's Carpets Still are Dogwood. However the last time I rode the NIP was...in the summer I believe. If I decide to take a ride on her sooner or later I can confirm this.

You're right! I wonder if she has to go back to Deas or if it'll continue on home to her familiar surroundings of Crofton-Vesuvius.
On another note, does anybody know where the MV Quinitsa is having her major refit done?

The Quinitsa is in fact at Deas this time. Much of her car deck was shrink wrapped last time I saw her.

With the same question in mind, after checking the SiiTech tracking page, I looked through RBI to find that now the SoVI is scheduled to be back on Monday, though who knows how accurate even that is especially considering that the night before she was anticipated to be back in service there still is no service notice contradicting this still-posted ETA for a return to service.

So I was looking at the Amended CFS contract, and on the Mill Bay route it listed the Klitsa as a vessel. Will she be replacing the Mill Bay?

I just noticed on siitech that the QoCumb is at Deas. I think that might be a first for her, or possibly for either of the 'Cumberland' Class vessels, can anyone confirm? So I was looking at the Amended CFS contract, and on the Mill Bay route it listed the Klitsa as a vessel. Will she be replacing the Mill Bay? This was pointed out when the Amended CFS Contract first came out and some discussion has been had about this question, though it was so long ago I'm not sure where it can be found (look for it around the time that the amended contract was released). Could this be a contingency in case of an unexpected breakdown? Why would they have a backup if whenever the Mill Bay's been out of service in the recent past the route has simply gone out of service? How could they adjust the Klitsa or the docks to be compatible with eachother as we know the Mill Bay to be the only ferry in the fleet capable of properly fitting the docks of the route? So many questions

I'm pretty sure the berths for that route have adjusters on them, so the dolphins can be brought in or out (closer or farther from the ramp) with a tug. It wouldn't be a big deal to make the berths compatible with the Klitsa, I don't think.
I'm going up-island tomorrow (unfortunately not for the CR open house), so I'll get some pics.

That's news to me; I remember many times in the past people talking about this being a big flaw of the route, that no other vessel could easily serve the route, but I'd be all too happy to be corrected on that, can anyone verify coxnnick's near certainty?

They have an extra K-Class vessel with the Kuper in service, and they should be getting the Albon Ferries once the new bridge opens up. So why not put a new boat on the route? The Mill Bay is getting pretty old.

they also seem to keep the klitsa is good shape (least on the outside) so it would be a good idea maybe any one know how much more fuel the klitsa uses then the mill bay?

Wonder why the SOBC is going to be out for 5 weeks instead of 4? Or is 5 weeks the usual period?
