the coquitlam is sailing for the oak bay today, anyone know if she is in refit or is there a problem with her? There is no service notice for this!

The Oak Bay will have gone into refit then. There would be no service notice, as there would be no change in level of service. But I do recall the RBI originally showing the Oak Bay being out for refit by April 1st (tomorrow). So perhaps she has gone in one day early. It has also been two years since she was last pulled out of the water. I've just checked Siitech, showing her sitting down at WMG in North Vancouver.

The Queen of Burnaby is now also at the Vancouver drydock. Assuming she's sitting on the Seaspan Careen now, side by side with the Queen of Oak Bay, which would be in the larger floating drydock.

She'll be sitting in the water, along the west side of the pier. The two drydocks will be rafted side by side on the east side of the pier.

Drove along Esplanade earlier this evening. Both the Burnaby and Oak Bay are lifted in drydock, and the welding continues on the QoNW at the west side of the pier.

I can confirm that Queen of Burnaby is in the Seaspan Careen with a fresh coat of bottom paint. I suspect she will be heading for Deas shortly as well.

Queen of Nanaimo Replacement Posted April 17, 2008 The Queen of Nanaimo will be out of service on the Tsawwassen - Southern Gulf Islands route from Saturday, May 3 until Friday, June 6, 2008 for scheduled maintenance. During this period, the Queen of Tsawwassen will be the replacement vessel. Because this is a smaller vessel than the Queen of Nanaimo, some overloads may occur at peak sailing times. Reservations are recommended. The published schedule remains in effect, except over the May long weekend from May 15 to May 20, 2008 when additional sailings will be available. For complete schedule details, visit www.bcferries.com or call 1-888-BCFERRY (223-3779) between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm daily. Alternate throughfare service to the Southern Gulf Islands is also available on the Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay route. BC Ferries looks forward to the Queen of Nanaimo returning to service prior to the summer season.

NICE! We'll have to try and plan a trip where we just happen to pass the Tsawwassen in Active Pass while riding a V-Class as well. May is already shaping up to be another busy Ferry trip month ;D .

re Queen of Nanaimo repairs: www.bclocalnews.com/vancouver_island_south/saltspringislanddriftwood/news/17807869.html====================== Ferry docked in May By Amy Geddes - Gulf Islands Driftwood - April 16, 2008 Oil leak warrants vessel repairTo fix a stubborn oil leak from the Queen of Nanaimo’s propellor blades, the vessel will be taken out of service and docked for a re-fit from May 2 to June 6. Stepping in as the relief vessel will be the Queen of Tsawwassen that will service the the Long Harbour-Tsawwassen route until repairs are complete. “[The oil leak] has been ongoing now for a number of months,” said marine superintendent Capt. Chris Frappell at an April 7 meeting with the Salt Spring Island Ferry Advisory Committee. B.C. Ferries attempted to fix the leak several times last year, said Frappell, but the problem was not satisfactorily addressed. This time, he said, docking will occur for a longer period to ensure the blades are fixed. “We should get a good seal on them,” Frappell said about the blades. “The issue of the oil leak will hopefully be cured once and for all.” Although the current leak was first observed several months ago during a routine dive inspection, B.C. Ferries staff said they were waiting for a relief vessel and dock space to become available to make repairs. Every two to three weeks since the leakage was discovered, divers have been monitoring the vessel while it’s been docked in Long Harbour. “What we can see from the dive pictures is small droplets,” said senior master Lewis Mackay. “But when you add up drops over months it can amount to enough oil that it’s visible on the surface.” “As a rule we’re not seeing it when sitting in the harbour,” said Mackay. “We’re thinking it’s leaking more when we’re underway.” Frappell said oil has been seen on the ocean’s surface while the vessel is in transit. At the advisory committee meeting, the public voiced concern about the Queen of Nanaimo being taken out of service during the May long weekend. Because the Queen of Tsawwssen has a reduced passenger capacity, B.C. Ferries officials were asked if the vessel could meet the demand during this time. Steve Anderson, B.C. Ferries’ manager of fleet deployment and scheduling operations, saidthat despite the capacity challenge, it is simply a matter of May being when dock space is available. “We are looking at adjustments to the Route 9 schedule to have the Queen of Tsawwassen make extra trips to and from Tsawwassen over that weekend.” said Deborah Marshall, B.C. Ferries’ media relations officer. ===========================

How many vessels have had, or will have, two refits this 'refit season'? I know that the NorAd and Q of Nanaimo will have had two. Are there any others?

I would suggest that the Alberni will be taken out of service sometime before the summer to give her a Once-over so she performs well for the Summer.

“We are looking at adjustments to the Route 9 schedule to have the Queen of Tsawwassen make extra trips to and from Tsawwassen over that weekend.” said Deborah Marshall, B.C. Ferries’ media relations officer. This leads into an interesting question of how much can they tweak a 1-boat schedule? I would think that it would require certain creativity and liberties being taken with regards to scheduling to stuff additional capacity into this route in any meaningful fashion utilizing a single vessel. Unless they are planning at modifying the Victoria-side of the SGI scheduling as well to potentially provide additional THROUGHFARE options via Rte-1, then simply modifying a Rte-9 schedule would not seem to be the best answer utilizing a single boat out of Tsawwassen. Certain events/activities are pre-planned by SGI residents timed to coincide with BCFS schedules, although I am not sure how many of them would head to the mainland as opposed to the island (short of family ties or specialist appointments). I can't foresee that BCFS could just run a "Friday-type" schedule willy-nilly on Rte-9 and expect it to suffice the traffic volume and flow patterns created by the lack of capacity with the Tsawwassen for Nanaimo substitution. Then again, I am not the planning wizard nor media relations person, so I am befuddled by what the heck they plan to do to make this work smoothly (and have serious doubts that it will be anything remotely near smooth....)

As I am planning to seize the moment and take a ride on our beloved Tsawwassen, I hope they do not figure this obvious solution out: Keep the QofT up at Little River for the month, and bring the Burnaby down to rte 9.
Assuming that's not going to happen: focus on through routing via SB through the month, and if needed for the long weekend, perhaps have the Saanich and/or Vancouver make one stop each at Village bay on the Friday and Monday taking some Mayne and Saturna traffic off the Tsawassen. Publish 8 pm( or 8:20) and 10 pm sailings for those nights, spreading the reservation load around. The V's often make an extra round trip anyway on long weekends.
Would be fun to watch a rookie stern in landing of a V at Village.

Your suggestion has been evaluated, and as it may have some merit and almost make sense operationally speaking, it has been completely discounted and will never see the light of day ... Too easy of a solution to work in the current atmosphere ...

Speaking of the Queen of Burnaby, she's steaming towards Tsawwassen right now. If it's timed just right, both the Nanaimo and Burnaby will be at Tsawwassen shortly.

The Oak Bay still hasn't left Deas yet. She's supposed to be running today. But unless Siitech is a little bit screwed up, it almost looks like she might be starting to be leaving the facility undertow. Hard to say just yet.

The BCFS vessel tracking page is currently showing the Queen of Oak Bay In Port at Deas. It's funny because I have never seen a vessel appear on the tracker before like that. They usually don't appear on the tracker until she's back at home base, HSB in this case. Perhaps this is happening because today was the originally planned back-in-service day.
