The Evergreen State might be able to fit into the Bellingham yard's drydock; I'm not entirely sure...a quick check of Google Earth indicates that the drydock is long enough but not wide enough. On the topic of the Fairhaven (Bellingham) Shipyard and Drydocks... I have seen this Advertisement in the Pacific Maritime Magazine (pacmar.com) for a while now. This scan came from the May 2009 issue. Not sure when they are getting it (or is it already there?), or even where they are going to put it! Cheers! ~LeC

Ah! See, I wasn't aware of the new drydocks they had coming in. Google Earth's photo is a couple of years old for that shipyard... so they DO have accomodations big enough for the Evergreen State.

It also indicates at the WSF web site that MV Spokane is due back in service next week and MV Evergreen State a week later. This is almost a month behind schedule listed on the two contracts. Life doesn't always live on paper. Things change. (Besides, I won't swear they went in on time, either.)

FYI - Spokane is back in Eagle Harbor this morning.

Which is too bad, because it wasn't in Todd's long enough to have any sort of exterior painting done...

Just received word from Barnacle...the Evergreen State has not been painted either.

So the blurb I found online mentioned the ability to work on "full size" Washington State ferries. That's kinda vague and could mean just the Supers and smaller, but does this now mean there is someone else than can dock a Jumbo MkII besides Todd? According to the flyer the docks got the beam but is it long enough?

It's probably the one mentioned in this article: www.bellinghamherald.com/602/story/714378.htmlFrom what I can tell, it would be able to handle any WSF vessel except for the Jumbo Mark II vessels (10 feet too short for those ones).

What's your definintion of 'too long'? The Supers can be lifted by Dakota Creek Industries' big drydock, but they hang out the ends like a foot-long dog on a regular bun.

I was going by the following quote in the article: "The new 500-foot semi-submersible barge will be able to lift vessels up to 450 feet, while also accommodating vessels that are wider." I didn't take into account the "end hanging out".

With MV Spokane back to work at Edmonds/Kingston, is there any update on the status of her painting?

Given that it wasn't at Todd's long enough to have any serious exterior painting done, I would suspect that--at best--a touch up job might have happened. Might, mind you.

How did the project to update and paint the Evergreen go? I think she is now at Eagle Harbor getting ready to return to service next week.

...which means by logical extension nobody's seen it yet. (Actually I saw it last week on its way back to the nest, with the house freshly painted, as well as--I THINK--the interior of the auto deck. I didn't get that good of a look as I was busy with my own boat.)

I only got one good pic of Evergreen on Monday, and it's not that great because she's somewhat hidden, but the parts you see in this pic look fresh and clean:

The exterior didn't look that bad to begin with; you can't tell that it hasn't been painted until you get up close to it.

Just wondering if WSF has any current maintenance projects in the final stages of planning that will include the painting of the vessel? The last painting projects (2009) seem to be those of MV Spokane and MV Evergreen State and (2008) MV Walla Walla?

Check the "Doing Business with WSF" portion of the WSF website and then look up the bids for maintenance. The newspaper notice in the PDF bid packets always have the easiest list of info for stuff that needs to be done to the vessels, including painting.

EGFleet covered the where to look; frankly, I kind of hope there won't be any paint applied this winter, because winter paint jobs don't stick to the boat. The Yakima was last painted in the winter, and the paint was peeling off in sheets by summer.

Guess I need new glasses, but I don't see that section on the WSF website with the new site revision. They now seem to have a section titled "Current Projects", but the latest info in that section describes the work on MV Evergreen State and MV Spokane. BTW: This section contains a nice photo of MV Evergreen State being painted at the Bellingham shipyard.

It takes a bit of digging since they revamped the website: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Ferries/business/contracts/Contracts.aspx?category=&fiscalyear=&awarded=And I note the bid specifications on the Chelan contain: PREPARATION AND PAINTING PORT AND STARBOARD CURTAIN PLATES PAINTING OF VESSEL HULL, ABOVE THE WATERLINE............... PREPARATION AND PAINTING OF PASSENGER DECK EXTERIOR PREPARATION AND PAINTING OF PASSENGER DECK EXTERIOR, TROUGHS

Here's the direct link to the "Doing Business With WSF" section: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/business/contracts/(it's not easy to find with the new WSF homepage design). The "upcoming projects" section does mention that the Yakima will be repainted during dockside work (late spring/early summer). It also states that either the Chelan or Sealth (or maybe both) will be getting exterior painting. The Kittitas did get exterior repainting during her recent drydock stint.

If you want to follow the longer road, click on 'Business' at the top of the page. Under "Procurement & Acquisition," select "Ferries Contracts." Under "Legal Services & Contracts," select "Contracts Search." Browse "All," and click on "Search." So yes, it's a bit obscure.

I hope it's the Chelan that's getting the exterior paint... the Sealth looks pretty good from what I've seen.
