So much for better maintenance Port Townsend / Keystone - One Boat Service Due to a steering problem the M/V Illahee is out of service until further notice. An alternate route is Edmonds/Kingston. Updates will occur as the conditions change. I wonder if this yet another case of rudder flop.

Herg you were close it is Chuckanut Drive. One of my favourite drives in North America. We used to take it about every other month when I was a kid. Our Sunday afternoon outing. Drive to Seattle via Chuckanut - stop at the Turkey House restaurant in Mount Vernon on the way down. And either eat at Ivar's Captain's Table or Black Angus. The prerequisit stop at Northgate for a load of See's Chocolates and then drive home. Back then Pier One imports on the waterfront just down from Ivars Acres of Clams was so cool. We had nothing like that in Vancouver.
The delays on the Canadian side could be from some intelligence or staff shortage. Or maybe the guards are working to rule for some reason. If the latter we should see a leak to the news media soon lol.

2nd day of bad luck for the Bainbridge Island Route:
Seattle/Bainbridge Route Due to police activity the Seattle/Bainbridge route will be delayed until further notice. The M/V Wenatchee will be diverted to Edmonds. Updates will occur when more information is available.

I wonder if the Kaleetan will be diverted as well. It wouldn't make sense to divert just that one vessel.
Vessel watch showed both the Puyallup and Sealth at Colman Dock and the Kaleetan heading towards Bremerton.

Whatever it takes:

Thursday, August 23, 2007 10:14AM Pt. Defiance/Tahlequah - 8/23 Update The Hiyu will sail at 12:50pm from Point Defiance and the 1:15pm sailing from Tahlequah.
Thursday, August 23, 2007 11:18AM Point Defiance/Tahlequah Route - Update There is heavy truck traffic and the truck space only was sold out. Expect delays with the smaller Hiyu.
*************************************************
Heavy truck traffic? For the Hiyu? Probably 4 trucks at once. (And I do say that with respect.)

Yeah, four full-sized semi-trucks would do it, now that I think about it.

Hiyu to Operate on the Point Defiance-Tahlequah Ferry Route Through mid-September Date: August 28, 2007 (SEATTLE) Washington State Ferries (WSF) announced today that the regular vessel on the Point Defiance-Tahlequah route, the Rhododendron, will be out of service until mid-September for repair. WSF had hoped to have the vessel back in service this week, but has since learned that repairs will take longer than expected. The 34-car Hiyu, the smallest ferry in the fleet, is operating on the Point Defiance-Tahlequah route in the meantime. Because the Hiyu carries fewer vehicles than the Rhododendron, travelers are encouraged to avoid peak periods or use other ferry routes if they have to travel to Vashon Island. “We expect some delays on the Point Defiance-Tahlequah route and sailings will sell out earlier than usual,” said Steve Rodgers, WSF Director of Operations. “We apologize for any inconvenience this causes our customers.” Route information, including wait times, will be updated regularly on the WSF website at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/The 60 year-old Rhododendron is at Foss Shipyard in Seattle for repairs to the rub rail approximately four feet above the waterline. “We’re working with our shipyard partners and the U.S. Coast Guard to repair the vessel and have it back in service as soon as possible,” said Paul Brodeur, WSF Director of Vessel Preservation and Maintenance. Built in 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland, the Rhododendron is the only vessel of its class in the WSF fleet. It operates year-round on the Point Defiance-Tahlequah route from Tacoma to the south end of Vashon Island.

To help clear vehicle traffic during busy travel days, WSF will add evening sailings on Friday and Sunday at 10:00 pm from Port Townsend and at 10:45 pm from Keystone. This schedule will continue until the regular winter schedule goes into effect on Tuesday, October 9th.
As of Monday, September 10th, the Port Townsend-Keystone ferry schedule will be:
DAILY LEAVING PORT TOWNSEND: 6:30 am, 8:00 am, 9:30 am, 11:15 am, 12:45 pm, 2:15 pm, 3:45 pm, 5:15 pm, 6:45 pm, 8:30 pm and on Friday and Sunday only, 10:00 pm.

WSF typically runs two boats on the Port Townsend-Keystone ferry route until Columbus Day in October. However, due to vessel availability, WSF is switching to the one-boat winter schedule approximately one month early.
WSF expects some sailings to sell out early, especially on weekends, and travelers are advised to adjust their travel plans to avoid lengthy waits.

I think that due to the time of year that WSF is going to have to add that extra sailing every night to ease the traffic congestion.
It is too bad the Coast Guard could not grant another extension for the Nisqually until the end of the two boat service schedule, but looking at it, they already have been granting extensions for years.
