I wonder why they didn’t bring bigger vessel to route instead of MV Seath?

I wonder why they didn’t bring bigger vessel to route instead of MV Seath? Well, the obvious answer is that nothing bigger was available. Issaquah and Samish are broken, Kennewick is smaller, Wenatchee and Chelan are in for maintenance and inspection. Any other options within the realm of realistic possibility?

Some News....
Reservations Available Feb. 2 for Travel Between March 28 and May 8 As Washington State Ferries continues to operate under the constraints of the COVID pandemic, it will extend its current schedule through May 8. Currently vehicle reservations on the Anacortes/San Juan Islands and Port Townsend/Coupeville routes are available two weeks or two days in advance of the sailing date through March 27. Vehicle reservations for the period between March 28 and May 8 will be released at 7 a.m. PST on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
A modified “peak season” service will begin on May 9 for all routes and run through Saturday, Sept. 25. This will bring increased service to the San Juan Islands and add a second vessel to the Port Townsend/Coupeville route. International service to and from Sidney, B.C. remains suspended due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Reservations for the May 9-Sept. 25 “peak season” will be available on March 9. Reservations can be booked online or by calling 206-464-6400 and speaking with an Information Agent. Customers can also call that number should they have questions or need additional information.
Please consider limiting your travel to only the most essential trips while service continues to be constrained by the pandemic.
To sum it up, it appears as if the San Juans will be operating the regular Summer schedule, minus the 5th dedicated Sidney boat. The 2 boat Port Townsend schedule will be the same minus the final Friday and Saturday round trip. Also, the Facebook post by WSF today noted a third boat will be returning to North Vashon, with 8 hour service days on weekends, like the former Fall and Spring schedules.

The Pt. Townsend - Coupeville route won't be going to a 2 boat schedule until June 6th at the earliest...
"Although WSF had previously scheduled a second boat to return to the Port Townsend/Coupeville route on May 9 at the start of this year’s peak season, COVID-related crewing shortages have forced WSF to delay providing this additional service until at least June 6.
All reservations that were made on the #2 vessel through June 6 will be cancelled—customers are encouraged to check their itinerary to see if they’re affected by this schedule change.
Customers whose reservations have been cancelled will need to secure new reservations for an available sailing. If you need assistance rebooking your travel, you can call 206-464-6400 to speak with a customer service agent.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding while we continue to navigate this unique and challenging time."

I don't even want to know what the reason is for the crewing shortage this year, given the relative low community spread of COVID in WA state all winter and the rapidly increasing percentage of vaccinations...

Well, here's another shoe dropping:
Luckily they were able to crew the Spokane as the B1 yesterday to help with the Memorial Day traffic load, majority of which didn't even fall to Bremerton at all, but still nice nonetheless.

Ferry Alert: Faunt/Va/SW - Route Reduced to 2-Boat Service on Sundays Starting this Weekend
Until further notice, the Fauntleroy/Vashon Island/Southworth route will be reduced to two-boat service on Sundays beginning on July 4. Starting this Sunday, the route will operate on its current Sunday schedule without the #3 vessel. Customers should plan ahead and check the schedule online to verify sailing times.
This difficult decision was made as a result of ongoing crew shortages and the need to reallocate limited resources throughout the ferry system. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding as WSF works to maintain as much service as possible.

Heh. From WSF Twitter today, referring to one-boat service at Bremerton this week through October:
Not too surprising though. No sense trying to crew another boat that doesn't even work well on the route if you're critically short of crew already.

Continuing the on-going saga of staffing shortages, new reservations for the San Juan Islands and Port Townsend routes are not being accepted for the Labor Day holiday weekend due to staffing shortages and possible cancelled sailings. There is a rumor going around that some of the "sick" are basically staging a walkout in protest of the governor's vaccine mandate for state employees. At this point, that's just a rumor, as reported by the Islands Sounder - see link below. In any case, glad I'm not going to Orcas this weekend. link to Islands Sounder article: www.islandssounder.com/news/ferry-service-disruption-expected-over-holiday-weekend/

It seems like the service disruptions that were predicted for Labor Day weekend never materialized - the boats all seemed to be running. Instead, it's this weekend. Both Yakima and Suquamish were out of service last night due to lack of crew, and this morning, Yakima and Tillikum are out of service. Looking at Vessel Watch last night, it appeared that WSF threw the schedule out the window and were running boats to clear the lots as needed. When I looked at it, Samish was running to Friday Harbor when it would normally be running to Lopez only (per the schedule). Don't know what happened after that.

Bad week for WSF, to say the least. Let's recap: Monday Anacortes - San Juans: Tillikum was still out of service for mechanical problems. San Juans went to winter 3-boat weekend schedule. If I remember correctly (a lot has happened this week), Samish resumed service in the evening WednesdayAnacortes - San Juans: Chelan out of service until the evening due to crewing issues. Yakima did the 1:55pm trip to Orcas to help out. It's a scheduled sailing that doesn't normally operate on Wednesdays. ThursdayAnacortes - San Juans: Chelan out of service again until mid afternoon - resumed service with the 3:40 sailing to Shaw & Orcas Seattle - Bainbridge: down to one vessel service all day due to crewing issues Friday: Here's today's issues - almost all routes impacted:Anacortes - San Juans: Tillikum out of service due to crewing issues, so no inter-island today Mukilteo - Clinton: 1-boat service due to crewing issues Edmonds - Kingston: 1-boat service due to crewing issues Seattle - Bainbridge: Walla Walla shifted to Bremerton to replace Chimacum. 1-boat service with MV Tacoma Seattle - Bremerton: Chimacum out of service due to crewing issues - Walla Walla replaced it F-V-S: 2-vessel service due to crewing issues Point Defiance - Tahlequah: no service due to crewing issues. ALL ROUTES: Temporary Schedule Changes for Several Routes Start Saturday, Oct. 16
Washington State Ferries will temporarily operate reduced sailing schedules on most routes beginning this Saturday, Oct. 16. The change will help offer more predictable and reliable service systemwide in the face of crewing shortages due to a global shortage mariners that has been worsened by the pandemic.
Therefore the following changes to service will begin this weekend:
• Seattle/Bainbridge, Edmonds/Kingston and Mukilteo/Clinton: One-boat service instead of two
• Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth: Daily two-boat schedule instead of three
• Anacortes/San Juan Islands: Daily three-boat schedule instead of four with no vehicle reservations
The updated schedules that will begin on Saturday are currently listed as “inactive” on the schedule page online and will become active this weekend when they begin.
Reservations for San Juan Islands Route
In an effort to accommodate customers affected by the service change who still need to travel, new reservations for travel in the San Juan Islands has been closed until further notice. The suspension is intended to leave capacity for those who were on cancelled sailings who still need to travel. Customers with reservations for sailings no longer in service will be given priority on other sailings and loaded on a first-come, first-served basis. Existing reservation holders whose sailings were not affected should still plan on arriving to their departing terminal at least 45 minutes before their scheduled sailing.
Customers who choose not to travel during this time will not incur a fee. Those passengers who need to travel standby without a reservation may encounter delays and should get to the terminal early.
We will continue to provide updates as they become available. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to provide reliable service during this challenging time.
