Interesting note about the Sidney indeed. During our circlepac trip a few weeks back, I can recall hearing from several crew members, that the Tsawwassen is too small for the Powell River-Comox route. Though I like the design, and might even be nice to have two of those working in tandem on Route 9.

Wow, It's the Ferry from the Future. Would have been nice having the SoVI Divided By 4. It almost looks like an open deck version of a modern P&O/Stena Vessel. Why didn't the government go with any of these plans. Maybe they didn't want to sink money into the Ferry system and focus on something else. Maybe they were too busy oooing and awwing the Fast Cats. This Ship probably would have been slightly better than having the Island in the Sky.
Comparing traffic patterns today to back then. We need it and we don't need the extra capacity. It really depends if it's the 5:00 on a Friday, or the 3:15 on a Tuesday. Or comparing all traffic at normal times to traffic during a long weekend or an event like the Filburg Festival. Oh, and if they didn't take the Burnaby in for refit at Spring Break or near long weekends You think we'd be complaining about getting left behind?

Looks like a catamaran design. Probably would be faster than the Burnaby, might have made one more round trip per day. That would decrease the need for a bigger boat. But all is in the past.

I was just thinking that the size of the bridge is way of proportion on that design though, as if they took the spirits and shrunk them, but kept the full size bridge. How much space would they really need on the bridge of an intermediate vessel? It also looks an awful lot like the ships run by the Cape May-Lewes ferry service after they were modernized. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8f/Twincapes.jpgupload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f6/MVCapeMay.jpgAnd just imagine, with a projected in service date of 1998, that ferry would have been in operation for ten years already by now.

And, well, the Cape May was up for sale for a while (though I couldn't find the actual sale brochure again), so we could just buy one now if you like the look

I've been going over this for awhile with other group members but how would a Coastal without a 4th deck sound for Tsawwassen to SGI and add platforms? Say Markus, could you possibly draw up plans for one? What other route could use a 240 car vessel? I considered Swartz Bay to SGI but I am not sure if that is complete overkill. Would Saturna Island like more tourists or keep isolated?

If you took a coastal, removed Decks 4 and 5, that would be reasonable, IF it fit into the current Gulf Island berths. If you have to rebuild all the berths then there would be no point.

I think even a single decked Coastal would be way out of the league for what is needed on route 9. Also, it's not likely it would be able to maneuver very well in Long Harbor, let alone fit into the berth there.
