But I know that there are some reason, that the NorEx will have this strengthened propulsion train. I believe BCFS specified Ice Class 1A standards due to the ability to withstand log hits on the propellor(s).

That´s correct. So we call this internally the "log-class" instead of an "ice-class". The reasons is, that there are no specifications how to strengthen a propeller to withstands logs, so one chooses an ice-class.

Looking at the plans and layouts - all I can say is wow. Many of the deficiencies of the NorAd and the things that many missed from the QoftN seem to be addressed. I agree. The ship also looks like it'll be considerably larger than any of the previous Northern ships, at nearly 150 meters in length (longer than the C-class ships). A question: if the Queen of the North would not have sunk, do you think BC Ferries would have had two of these ships built (one each to replace QOTN and QPR)? Or would they have had this one as the QOTN replacement, and perhaps a smaller version of the same ship as the QPR replacement (given that the QPR primarily sails to the Queen Charlottes, a route with lower traffic requirements)?

It should be reminded to all that the BC 'Liberal' Party - more SoCred taking into account the backgrounds of the majority of their cabinet ministers since taking power from the NDP provincially - partly won their current power through the promise of delivering 3 newbuild northern vessels to the people of BC as crown-owned assets; this was before the sinking of the Queen of the North, though, granted.

This ship looks very nice in all respects - a far cry from what they got in the Sonia purchase. Its auto capacity at 130, is 27 less than what the QotN was once listed at. The North was listed at 115 at the time of the sinking due, I believe, the installation of the MacGregor doors dividing the car deck into six zones.
I note that the ship can be fitted with ramps, but won't be, at least to begin with. This does not make a lot of sense to me. Adding 1 lane wide ramps fitted up against the centre machinery casing could boost auto capacity by +25, and also allow for increased revenue during the busy summer season. It would, I believe, still allow lots of room for over height traffic. They could arrange it so that the lower level had an ~2.5 m clearance, while the upper level would have ~2.0 m clearance. Such ramps should be fitted prior to delivery.

Here's a small clip of an old BC Ferries Employee Newsletter dated back to August 1996. It includes a concept drawing of the New Northern Vessel they had planned for their 10 year plan, that was just getting underway. Other articles include goals for getting the First Fastcat competed, the First Century Class Ferry completed, and Duke Point Terminal being complete. I'm glad BC Ferries waited on the new Northern vessel...the NorEx is alot nicer looking, because this one looks like on of the Stena Vessels. If you want to read the rest of the page of this newsletter, have a look at: i99.photobucket.com/albums/l291/ferryman_2006/File0005.jpg

Here's a news report from an old Global News investigation from the late 90's I'm assuming. This is one of a few things on a VHS that Airchime (Alan) had given me nearly a year ago. (PS, does the news reporter look familiar, Markus? ;D )

A very interesting story. I remember talking with a fellow from BC Ferries who told me that the QPR was an asbestos-filled ship, and even after all of the asbestos abatement, it would still be an asbestos-filled ship. It looks like they had two designs in mind for the ship... a bare-bones model, and a more "upscale" one. It seems the new Northern Expedition will be far larger than these early concepts, although I understand the Northern Adventure is more of the QPR replacement while the Northern Expedition is the Queen of the North replacement.
