At first I didn't really like Norad for the Northern Adventure, but when you put it NorAd, it gives it a little better meaning. Emphasize the "Ad" in the name and you can refer to the history and meaning of her name - a marketing ploy rather than a tribute.

I'd always been thinking of it as the 'Nad, but NorAd is probably more palatable.

Researching a little further, NorAd is also the name of a santa tracking website.
How does "The Sleigh" sound? ;D

That's a funny one, Nucksrule. I've nicknamed the Super C's the "RICE class", from my belief that we'll get a fourth Super C sometime in the future, to be named "Coastal Experience". Oh, and the Northern Expedition can be nicknamed "Endeavour," so the three northern vessels would all be named after Space Shuttles.

Oh, and the Northern Expedition can be nicknamed "Endeavor," so the three northern vessels would all be named after Space Shuttles. Help me out, re the mystery 3rd Northern vessel that would share a name with a space shuttle: 1) Northern Discovery - same as a space shuttle 2) Northern Endeavor - as you suggested, re a nickname 3) ?? Let's consider the rest of the present & past shuttle fleet: - Enterprise - the 1977 test vehicle - Not a ferry (but an aircraft carrier, twice) - Columbia - the first operational shuttle - ok, so that's an Alaska ferry. - Challenger - not a ferry (but a tall ship) - Discovery - a possible future ferry, mentioned above (also a pacificat and Capt. Van's ship) - Atlantis - not a ferry (and not Ms. Morissette) - Endeavor - already mentioned above, as a ferry nickname just curious what your 3rd ferry was. Columbia? ---------------- late brainwave edit: So your're calling "Norad" a space shuttle, re the Santa thing?

NORAD is also the North American Aerospace Defense Command. A conglomeration of Canadian, American and Mexican?? defense departments, specifically Air Forces. It was formed during the Cold War to defend against a Russian Air attack over the arctic. similar to NATO.

There may be a Mexican observer but I don't believe they are part of NORAD. They rotate command and sometimes a Canadian General is bossing the troops around inside Cheyenne Mountain, in Colorado Springs. There was a great documentary on building it and how they discovered weaknesses in the mountain itself and it was in danger of collapsing.

I'm posting this op-ed here because it's sort of related to ferry nick-names. (Beside which, I couldn't find a dedicated sarcasm thread.)
This was in today's Province, and my mom pointed it out to me. She actually got quite a kick out of the nick-name someone came up with, which I've highlight in the article.
Das boot, and dis boot, now B.C. ferries The Province
Sunday, December 30, 2007
B.C. Ferries has unveiled its latest German-built superferry, The Spirit of Three-Sailing Wait, with a traditional First Nations welcoming ceremony followed by a speech from company CEO David Hahn.
"Using German boatbuilding expertise the ferry came in before schedule, under budget, and its trans-Atlantic journey from the Flesburg shipyards (except for a torpedo mishap involving the Lusitania), was uneventful," Hahn said.
Hahn then announced a fare hike, the 814th so this year, and a new service by which you can pre-book a place at the rail of your preferred sailing from which to throw up your Sunshine Breakfast.
"We're hoping this will cut down on the line-ups and generally streamline the ferry-sailing experience," Hahn said.
B.C. Ferries Corporation is ending 2008 on a high, with the public enthused about its newest vessels that were designed with the West Coast's distinctive lifestyle in mind.

I wonder if the BCFS lawyers will be calling the CanWest lawyers about that editorial piece? I know that we do that kind of thing all the time on the forum....but a published article is different.
The issue that I see is the article's fabricated comments that were attributed to a real person (David Hahn).
The humour is funny though, especially re the Sunshine Breakfast railing toss.

It might be interesting to see, because putting something in print like that (with someone's name attached) could technically be considered libel or even some measure of defamation of character. And there was no specific author noted in the piece.

Well if CBC can get away with it by dissing the Prime Minister and many other politicians on 22 minutes, why would BCFS sue? In fact, isn't that considered frivolous?

Funny. Will this New Vessel Be Serving Constant Complimentary Sunshine Breakfasts. How Long Till We Hear something like this..?
Pieces of Lost BC Ferry Found BC Ferries officials quietly walked along the shores of a Turkish ship breakers yard where pieces of a long lost BC Ferry were found. The ferry, used to run on various major routes in the 60s and early 70s. According to BC Ferries the ship was made with cheep steel which was showing poor result with various leaks, which crews plugged them with duct tape and posted pages from playboy magazine to hide the tape. The BC Government, under the NDP in 1974 secretly hid all information on the vessel and quickly after sent it to the Alang ship breakers yard. They received only $150,000 for the vessel, which cost about 1,000,000 to build. To compensate for the loss, the NDP bought the German built Stena Danica later renamed Queen of Surrey and Queen of the North. It is unknown how the parts were found in Turkey but proof of it actually being of the vessel is true as the Ship's Bell was found. The bell gave a clue to the name as it spelled out "Queen of Ri__ mo_d". Three of the words look to be Scratched out. On the other side of the bell spray painted on is the Word "Acoa" similar to the name given to the former BC Ferry Queen of Victoria which was Renamed Queen of Ocoa. Other Pieces found include broken structure from the old news stand, various pieces of the funnel identified by the pastel blue and white, various parts of the hull with identified pages from playboy magazines, and half of the BC coat of arms. BC Ferries Plans to hide the remains by recycling them to be used in new ferries and hiding the ship's bell in the President/CEO David Hahn's office.
To end this without going fully off topic here's a new Nickname, with a nod to the Beatles... (Singing) "Island in the Sky With Diamonds"

It is interesting to see what we suggested and what has actually occured.
The Kuper has not really received a nickname, we don't talk about 'er enough. The Coastals tend to be refered to with CR, CI or CC out of ease. NorAd and NorEx seems to be the forum standard.
As for the Northern Discovery I want to see NorDic become the standard, which may be appropriate if she comes online during 2010.

Actually, according to PCL Driver, the Coastal Celebration is the C-Cell, like a battery. Let's hope she has a little more voltage than that though. And I prefer Markkarj's name for the Northen Discovery: The Nor-Disco (Yeah! ).

I actually thought it was a moderator who was experiencing a flash from the past and sneaking something extra onto my post. I resemble that comment. Does anyone remember that kids' music album "Sesame Street Fever" from 1978 or so? The cover had muppets (Grover & 2 others) dressed & posed as the BeeGees. ....and the nickname "C-Cell" makes me thing "soft-cell", which makes me think of the song "tainted love". Now if we're going to call the C-Renaissance the "Renney", then should we nickname the other Coastal-ships for Canucks coaches too?
