Is this the vessel that they are building for the Saltspring run?

I am really suprised none of us have managed to find anything out with respect to the new I Class Vessel that should be being built right now. I really just made this thread to see if some of us can try and exercise our "contacts" to try and get some info on this thing. The curiosity is killing me Also, seeing the Coastals be built step by step makes me want to see more!

shh... BC Ferries is building the new I class ferry in the same underground chamber where they keep the confiscated Queen of Richmond documents... but you didn't hear it from me, folks.
Seriously though, I thought I saw a glimpse of it under construction during that Daily Planet segment about BC Ferries... it's actually looking okay, about the same stage as the Coastal Celebration.

Is that the "I" class vessel the one being built in Germany or the one that is being built in BC?

Answer: here, in Canada. from BCFS website: Joining the Fleet in 2008
By the summer of 2008, another new ship will join the BC Ferries team, allowing for the retirement of the 45-year-old Queen of Tsawwassen. The new 125-car intermediate size ferry, which is currently under construction at Vancouver Shipyards in North Vancouver, will initially sail on our beautiful Earls Cove – Saltery Bay route on the Sunshine Coast. The new vessel will offer a comfortable lounge, a snack bar and a new state-of-the-art lifesaving system.-------------- And here's a link to a page with more BCFS info: www.bcferries.com/about/newbuild/newintermediate.html

Thank you. Now I'm confused, after reading the article. I'll tell you, what I do know. The Superstructure for a new BC Ferry is under construction here in Victoria. The hull, being built in Vancouver, will be towed to Victoria and the ferry will be assembled here. Question: Is this the same ferry?

It might just be, shipdaughterwife, as we've seen little work to anything but the hull, the latest visual update apparently being from that Discovery Channel program Daily Planet's tour of the former CFI building at Vancouver Shipyards that I managed to miss myself (hoping for a repeat, though). Considering the lack of work above the hull in North Vancouver, it would be quite feasible for WMG to tow it out to their Victoria Shipyards at Esquimalt for addition of superstructure. What's your source on the superstructure you mentioned being built in Victoria?

i heard that the hull is about 75% completed, and the super structure supports are being built as we speak.

My sources are very reliable and do not wish to be identified. I do have relatives and long time friends who work for various companies, that operate out of Esquimalt dry dock. I have known for months that Vic Ship is building the superstructure for a ferry. I heard that the construction started sometime after the NorAd left the area. Just how much has been built, I do not know---but one part is very recognizable. If I find out more, I'll let you know.

Does anyone know if the in-construction "I-Class" ship will likely have some of the same problems that the Capilano & Cumberland have?
This would be re poor-fuel-efficiency, and the RAD / Z problems. From what I can tell, the I-Class looks like an updated version of the Cap/Cumbie.
Does anyone know (or care to speculate) on the amount of thought that may (or may not) have been put into this new ship's design? Do you think the Cap/Cumbie problems were taken into consideration?
....just wondering.
Maybe Mr. "Katawa-Senior" has an inside scoop on this one?

Does anyone know (or care to speculate) on the amount of thought that may (or may not) have been put into this new ship's design? I'm willing to speculate on that. What they seem to want to do, is build a more 'suped up' version (nope, no hydrolics on this ferry) of the current (disfunctional) I-class. With a bit of Skeena Queen thrown in. So no, not really much thought into this design. Do you think the Cap/Cumbie problems were taken into consideration? nope. Keep in mind, the Capilano's most recent problems happened after they designed the ferry. Worst case scenario: The new Inlet Crosser becomes a victim of the RAD-swapping between I-ferries. -------- At this point in time, it's pretty well anyone's guess as to what's really going on regarding the new I-Class, but it's not that hard to be able to compare it with the existing I-Class.

The Cap/Cumbie problems were specifically related to the RADs, and the company that made the initial purchase RADs isn't even making them anymore, let alone the fact I believe they're out of business (hense the lack of replacements). The ships were not inefficient until the put the MB's on the Cap. The Skeena's problems were related to a flawed engine design, whcih in the end became effective but sadly cost several million dollars to retrofit to this point.
And just because a ship looks like "the Cap with some Skeena thrown in..." does not give you the information you need to make a judgement on its mechanical design.
