I'm getting a weird feeling from the New Westminster's horn now. It's gone to that haunting minor chord after the repairs, and it sounds amazing, but... Call me crazy, but it almost sounds like she's sad. Like how the Nanaimo's whistle used to have that little hiccup at the end of its soundings, as she was approaching retirement - almost like she was choking up, knowing her trip to oblivion was near and she'd never see Active Pass again. Given that the rest of the West's sisters are gone from the fleet and sailed off into that great yonder, maybe I'm not far off.
Or maybe I'm just weird and I'm reading too much into things that aren't things.
Don't try to tell me these ships don't have souls though.

No need to be rude. :v Can't a girl have beliefs? lol Seriously though, I wonder how the 'West's horn went to a minor like that. Didn't they replace the thing that made her whistle sound off? -qod

That also brings this to train horns, there is a metal diaphrams in the horns, that could also be cracked.

Was that a Flugel Horn sounding right at the end of the video? I can't decide between the Sunshine Breakfast joke, the All Aboard Breakfast joke, or the fantasy "Coastal Burrito" joke.

I posted a question about the love-hate relationship with ferry whistles, to the Galiano Island community Facebook page. Some interesting responses, for people who hear them on a daily basis Here's the link: HEREThe latest ship whistle, the V2V Empress, is disliked.

Exciting times are to come ahead! I never use the ferries ever except for once or twice during the summer so I should have some whistle recordings up soon! For some it’s their commute but for me it’s always exciting to go on the ferries, it’s a joyful experience!

For some it’s their commute but for me it’s always exciting to go on the ferries, it’s a joyful experience! I look forward to them. When I was young, my parents and I would do 2 trips a year from Vancouver Island to the mainland: Easter and Thanksgiving weekends. - One year we took a "new" ferry called Queen of Surrey, which was really a used European ferry formerly named Stena Danica. - One year we took a real "new" ferry called Queen of Coquitlam, and there were escalators on it.

I just heard from a BCFerries customer relations agent and she told me something about the Queen of Nanaimo's whistle. Apparently the Nanny's whistle became unreliable and needed a lot of maintenance so they replaced it with the single tone trumpet and sold her old whistle as we already know. I find that interesting. Would say your source's info is not totally accurate.
This is what I know:
Yes, her whistles were replaced with a single unit (Kahlenberg KM 250) to ensure she met Transport Canada's regulations so she could sail under her own power in Canadian waters into international waters as part of her journey to Fiji.
Her whistles were/are in working order. They consist of Air Chime: KM 250 KM 200 KM 165
Currently being restored cosmetically.
Yes they were sold - to ensure her voice would remain in the Gulf Islands.
She will be heard again - just not as soon as you, I and everyone else would like! Just glad her memory will continue and this important part of her was not sent to Fiji.

My yearly review of Ferry Whistles is now out! Merry Christmas everyone! Its pretty crazy that the New West shakes the deck I didn't have my tripod so just put the camera on what I presume are the life jacket locker up by the bridge on the port side. Was the only place that I could find that was not blasted by the wind!

Hello everyone! First post here, showing off my collection of Airchime whistles. I have a setup similar to the Coastal Celebration, consisting of an Airchime KM 165, 200, and 250. Attached are some photos and a video clip of the setup. Surprisingly they don't use as much air as you would think. The few short blasts in the video were from 30 gallons of 120 psi air. The 165 is new old stock from the Royal Canadian Navy, the 200 is from a Canadian ore ship, and the 250 is from a blast warning system in Colorado. The manifold was custom built by my friend in Texas. I also have a KM 85 from Sisters Island Lighthouse, a 110 from the Canadian Leader, an iron ore ship, and a 135 from an unknown ship that was scrapped in India.

The Queen of New Westminster’s whistle from July 2019. It sounds like the Queen of Burnaby’s whistle somewhat now, except for that one note

Does anyone in this thread know about air chime whistles and their makings? Is it even possible for the Queen of New Westminster to sound like it does in this video? It’s so strange because it went from a minor chord after being repaired to almost sounding like the Queen of Burnaby’s Airchimes , this really puzzles me It's not possible, because that's the Queen of Vancouver in that video, and her horn sounded a different chord to the Queen of New Westminster.

Back in 'the day' the New West never served on Route 1. It was always the Vancouver, Victoria, Esquimalt & Saanich. That changed in 1993/4 when the Spirit twins came on line. I always thought that the V-class horns sounded great echoing through Active Pass.
