no but my grandfather worked over 38 years at bcferries and because i am great friends with the senior master on the new west and having a free bcferry pass i took my grandfather on her for a entire route 1 service day on her and i decided to use the pull chord as its the proper way to do it every trip through the pass

Jimmy: this is usually how people get their ferry forum accounts deleted... - YouTube action will be taken, unless you self-delete your video first. I suggest that you self-review your YouTube account, and remove any other stolen items. PS: I'm not sure that the unauthorized copy video was posted on this forum, but it shows the character of a regular member who posts here frequently. (big thanks to a friend who brought this to my attention)
@jimbojet, you need to do the right thing and delete those items you have 'borrowed'. Passing off other people's work as your own is never acceptable.

Just so everyone is up to speed here - we've reached out to the member and let him know that this is not acceptable and to correct this immediately. We as mods do our best to patrol for stolen content, however we can't always catch everything.
I would encourage everyone to:
- Watch for content of yours that has been stolen (pay extra-close attention to repeat offenders); - Bring every instance of it to our attention (posted to the forum or not, it is still good for us to be aware that it is occurring and take corrective action if needed); and - Report stolen content on other social media platforms to Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
Thanks.

Thanks. I understand the irritation of those who get their photographic work taken without acknowledgement, even if it has rarely happened to me... not being a photographer. Although, a couple of days ago, I did let Nauticapedia know that the photo for a ship in their database was actually mine, and not from the person it was credited to. We live so much of our lives online these days that there needs to be some ground rules for the stuff we post, even if it isn't a hard and fast matter of copyright. I do a lot of genealogy, and in my trees posted on Ancestry, I make sure everything I get from someone is properly credited, if the website doesn't do it for me. Even a single piece of info that someone forwarded to me in a message is credited, if they're okay with that. It's just civility and respect. Maybe there's a sense of entitlement sometimes about stuff that is 'free'. I understand how that can come about, but we need to do better.

(although he hasn't responded) I've deleted that post, so it doesn't clutter this thread with old-drama. Ferry horn videos have always surprised me with their popularity. For a while, I was being contacted by a person who happened to be blind, who loves ferry horns and gets a lot of enjoyment from viewing those kinds of videos.

I really wanted to showcase the New West’s whistle seemingly changes slightly or majorly year to year. I hope one day it goes back to the Signature E Major but we’ll see...
(Apologizes for the less than stellar framing in the earlier clips, I was still learning how to use a DSLR)

Here are the last of my 2021 recordings, the crew on the New West during the summer were absolutely amazing, almost every sounding was pull cord! However the Spirits rarely used their three tone whistle this year when I was on Mayne in the summer... and the Celebration drops a tone, but oh well. Also I have switched cameras for this video, if you notice a difference please say so!

I recorded Queen of New Westminster's horn today but my recording doesn't sound like how I expected it to. Is this how it normally sounds? I think it sounds much better on other videos compared to my recording. Maybe it is my camera settings? I didn't really listen to the horn because I was focusing on taking photos so I can't remember if it sounded like my recording. Also, what is a "pullcord" horn? Does the horn have multiple ways to work? My recording link is on this post.
Depending upon where you are and the quality of your microphone. In your case, you were far away and dealing with wind.

Yes it does so the pull cord is a manual string that connects from the wheel house to the funnel or mast then another manual method for horns is the Pull lever or Pull bar which is as it’s name suggests a bar that is just pulled slowly downwards and lastly the most common method is the switch or button which sends a electronic signal to the air solenoid valve in the whistle which then opens fully to allow air to rush out and then closes once one’s finger is off the button or switch. Thanks. Do they sound different? The button soundings have been a little off recently. Last time I went on the New West she sounded only two tones with the button. With the pull cord however she sounded all three tones. In this video it sounded like only two tones were sounding.

This is what it sounded like at the beginning of spring break. Note the last two soundings are with a pull cord. The clear way to tell is a slower start and each trumpet coming in separately. She also changed in tune recently, don't know how or why but...

She also changed in tune recently, don't know how or why but... I can’t help but assume that the bass note of the whistle on the New West has stopped working. Which means it’s sounding 2 out of 3 horns, similar sounding to what the Queen of Burnaby had in her later years Video courtesy of CS16:

In the videos it sounded like the bass note was missing but I promise it sounded. I hope that BCFerries are able to repair the solenoid or clean the whistles or do whatever they do before the summer season…

Mayne Queen horn now sounds broken

The Mayne Queen is definitely out of tune and I work on her time to time and when I sounded her whistle which I posted on my youtube channel it emitted a sound even the captain had never heard. That said in other ferry horn related news the QoNW has finally had her horns repaired and she is sounding by far the most beautiful I’ve heard her sound in my twenty years of being alive and I hear her nearly every day when I work on the Celebration, She sounds almost like the Vancouver right now and her automatic button horn sounds equally as good as her pull cord. I have a few recordings of the New West recently and when they use the pull cord just right she sounds all three tones with a proper E Major, her push button sounds just like the Burnaby without the bass note.

Here's the New West sounding the best she has in a while! I'll have another video at the end of the summer with more soundings. The Celebration's Swartz Bay end isn't sounding her middle trumpet and it sounds quite bad...

Summer Whistles Dump! The New West in my opinion sounds better than the Nanaimo did, very cheery and in tune! Also, I heard the Seaspan vessels sounding their whistles, it sounds like just a KM250 equivalent. They were not consistent with their soundings. I also have never heard myself the crew using the pullcord at Tsawassen before this…

i'm no expert on ferry horns but that did not sound right! I think they just pulled the handle a little slower, sounds like the Alberni normally does, with a Db minor at the end.

They should remove the video that say "unavailable, this video is private"
