For one day- yesterday- there was the novelty of three vessels on route five, as Quinitsa did at least one trip out of Swartz Bay. The arm-chair anti-BCF crusaders must have been in heaven with Quinitsa on the busy Route-5. You know, the "The ships are a bus, not a cruise-ship" crowd. You want utilitarian, you've got it. Well those good times are over now. Quinitsa is utilitarian, but unlike her successor on the Denman route, women aren't forced to share bathrooms with men and their dodgy habits... maybe that counts as an 'amenity'. When I encounter the 'cruise ship' mindset, I try to point out that there really are no frills on our ferries, that the food services and news stand/gift shops generate revenue, and also provide gainful employment for crew who are onboard due to Transport Canada crewing regulations, as opposed to the number of people who would be necessary just to operate the vessel from one dock to the other. People also don't understand that ferries going through Active Pass are partly tourist venues, and if they look slightly fancier than the utilitarian WSF vessels, that's understandable. I think back to David Hahn and his contention that BC Ferries was in fact competing with a lot of other tourist experiences in our province... he made a very valid point.

The Queen of Cowichan is on her way into Departure Bay right now....right behind the Queen of Oak Bay, and totally empty. She heads back to Horseshoe Bay at 2:30.

The Queen of Coquitlam just left Departure Bay empty, behind the Queen of Oak Bay....but now the Coquitlam is heading north up the Strait of Georgia. Her first scheduled sailing is at 2:30 today, from Departure Bay.

The Quinitsa arrived back into Berth 2 at Fulford Harbour by around 8:30 this evening. She departed Denman West around 8:15am today, and made a brief stop at both Buckley Bay and Swartz Bay along the way. No service notices hinting of any sudden vessel replacements though

No service notices hinting of any sudden vessel replacements though ***sigh*** And so ends Hornby's fantasy about the new government taking into account the annual interminable delays for people here wanting to get to medical appointments, or doing anything in town during the high season. Yet another year of often spending three or four hours or more, round trip, commuting a distance of a few miles.

Looks like the Coastal Inspiration is out for a test run right now, passing by Departure Bay, heading north in the Strait of Georgia.

Thanks for the update 'Departure Bay', I was wondering what that whooshing sound was that breezed by my ear a while ago. Must have been the total collective corporate sigh of relief emanating from the BCFS bastion in Victoria.

Can't confirm but it looks as if the Spirit of Van Island has left Tsawwassen & making it's way for Deas Dock.

Bowen Queen now at Denman West. I'd go over tomorrow just for the novelty of seeing one of my favorites there, but I suspect she's not staying.

Kahloki sailing down Trincomali Channel headed for Fulford Harbour. I am kinda curious the reasoning on doing maintenance on Kahloke during the off-season peak instead of peak season. I would personally maintenance on Kahloke in summer with Quinitsa replacing her on Horby Island route because it would be good opportunity to increase capacity on route while doing maintenance on main vessels during summer.

I assume that she's doing dock fitting in a number of locations, and then returning to Hornby (per something I saw on a Hornby facebook page). She seems the natural ship to replace Kuper (Thetis route) and Klitsa (Mill Bay route).

But why couldn’t BC Ferries do that in summer because Klitsa could have gone into maintenance during the summer months which would mean the Kohloke on the Mill Bay route with an increase car capacity. Kuper could have gone into maintenance before or after the peak season with Kahloke replacing her. I would have hoped that BC Ferries would have foresight like with Bowen Queen on the Quarda Queen II route during the peak season and also with the Quarda Queen II replacing the Tackek on her route too during the peak season.

I was hoping she was going to Point Hope for a stay, I need another ship to monitor....

Niggling point... italicizing ship names is a valid nod toward maritime journalism... but it doesn't really work if you spell the name wrong. You're right, Blue Bus Fan- it would indeed have been nice if BC Ferries could have put Kuper or Klitsa into refit when Quinitsa would have been very useful- during summer. Their excuse was that they wanted Quinitsa in reserve for possible unscheduled relief. Pretty lame, I'd say, and disrespectful to a community that had to see her sitting doing nothing for a good part of the summer, as they took six to eight hours to do a round trip to a city twelve miles away, as the crow flies.

With all the problems besetting the Salish class vessels, perhaps we should delineate the folks at Remontowa Shipyards as 'refitters' and not builders. Correct me if I'm wrong but overall weren't the final results from Flensburger for the 'Coastals' and the 'Northern Expedition' somewhat better? Let's hope the Damen builders in Romania do a first-rate job on the newest batch of 'newbies' that will join our fleet in the not too distant future.

The Orca didn't stay long last night, but the Raven is still here this morning, tied up in berth 1.

I think once they work out all the glitches on the Salish Class, they would hopefully they become reliable. I personally, think BC ferries is going to get crap out Damen builders in Romania because it seems like Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Ferries are having the same problems with the M/V Veteran and M/V Legionnaire.
