The Coastal Renaissance is on its way in to Departure Bay. Time for service? Oddly, it's on the schedule for the Swartz Bay run tomorrow.

A short photo-essay of a typical exchange of vessels from the Fleet Maintenance Unit (Deas) in Richmond. 1400 September 5th: Island Gwawis prepares to depart berth 3 in Deas Dock. Crew vehicles have been loaded and the Mate oversees FMU riggers releasing lines from the Bridge-wing.
1500 September 5th: Gwawis exits the Fraser River, keeping tabs on the hundreds of pleasure craft enjoying their Labour Day fishing for one more salmon. Complicating factors is the inbound Queen of Coquitlam (unseen) necessitating a "red to red" or "port to port" meeting and tight turn around the crowd.
1700 September 5th: Gwawis cruises past Entrance Island and through the anchorage into Nanaimo Harbour to conduct an exchange with the Island Kwigwis. The shuffle requires docking, discharging crew vehicles and then proceeding to the "VVP" (Visiting Vessel Pier). The ship-move crew then hustle back to Nanaimo Harbour on foot to load their vehicles on the Kwigwis and take over from the operational crew.
Evening of September 5th: having taken over command of the Island Kwigwis the ship-move crew load their vehicles and and proceed to berth 1 in Departure Bay to await favourable tides at Deas Dock the next day.
1530 September 6th: having made the return trip across the Strait of Georgia the Kwigwis awaits clearance from FMU to proceed to berth 4 in Deas Dock. Stiff winds and a flood tide on the Fraser River are reminders that no entrance over the shallow bar and through the narrow approach is totally routine.
1600 September 6th: sandwiched between the Queen of Coquitlam, Bowen Queen (unseen), and Queen of Burnaby the Kwigwis waits patiently while an assist tug makes fast her aft lines.
1700 September 6th: a flurry of Fleet Maintenance riggers descend to make fast the vessel until she departs in a week or so. The ship-move crew shut down the vessel and drive off until the next move...

Tonight, you'll see the Coastal Inspiration and Coastal Celebration trade places for a few weeks. Inspiration will depart Duke Pt for Swartz Bay around 8:15pm, and then Celebration departs around midnight. It'll all performed by the one crew from Duke Pt. Route 30 isn't scheduled to sail the final round trip of the day on Saturday nights nor does it sail the first round trip on Sunday mornings with the off-peak schedule

This sounds like make work project in my opinion because they’re a same size vessel and doesn’t provide benefits to anything.

I understand there was a tentative plan for the Inspiration and Celebration to permanently trade roles, is this some sort of trial run? And if so, what exactly needs to be ironed out? If you or anyone else on here have any further insight I'd be very interested to hear it.

They'll be switching back sometime next week after the Thanksgiving weekend due to a "mechanical limitation" with the Coastal Celebration. Unsure what that means specifically, but shouldn't be too long term.

In Island Class news... Most vessels are now in their home regions. One of the last puzzle pieces is a swap between the K'ulut'a and Aurora. On October 17th the Aurora will leave Quathiaski Cove bound for her home port of Alert Bay. She'll overnight at the government dock before returning to service on the 18th. K'ulut'a will depart Alert Bay before the first scheduled sailing on the 18th and proceed down to the Quathiaski Cove layby berth to serve as the training vessel for Route 23 crews in November and December. Island Nagalis, in the meantime, is penciled in to remain in Buckley Bay until required for Route 23 service.

I enjoyed a few days on Quadra Island recently, and so my spouse and I did a stop-by at the lay-by berth on Pidcock Road. It was good to see the Island Aurora close-up, and to work some photos with the Aurora in the foreground and the PRQ in the background. ---------------- [We stayed on the Heriot Bay side of Quadra Island, and we used our sightings of Tachek to tell us what time of day it was. When we're on vacation without schedules, the ferries still show us the regular passage of time]

The Queen of Coquitlam just left Departure Bay empty (and turned around in the bay while heading out). The Coastal Celebration is still at the maintenance berth, but is running its engines as if it also intends to go somewhere.
Edit: the Coastal Celebration has moved over to the middle berth at Departure Bay.

The Coastal Celebration is now on the Duke Point run, and the Coastal Renaissance Inspiration arrived at the maintenance berth at Departure Bay at about 2 am and is now tied up there.

Malaspina Sky has moved from North Vancouver dry dock to Deas Dock, now Deas Dock is full.
After the next ferry leaves Deas Dock, would the Powell River Queen to move to Deas Dock? It seems like the Powell River Queen would be more important to move to Deas Dock than these other ferries because the Powell River Queen is just moving around without anything being done retired now?
