Dear Sir: I have recently joined this board although I have posted here before. I am active in the New York City area and have a great deal of information regarding the passenger carrying ferryboats and motor vessels in the eastern U.S.
My question is this; Is it appropriate to post information here about single ended motor vessels used in ferry service such as those of New York Waterways or are postings limited to the traditional double-ended ferryboats?
I thank you for your time and look forward to your response.

Most of us are in BC and Washington. Information and photos on ANY ferries in your part of the world will be welcome here. We have a pretty good mix of single and double-ended ferries on our coast, too, so we are looking forward to your input on east coast ferries. Passenger-only ferries count, too. Thanks for posting here, and once again, welcome to our Forum.

I can also tell by your name that you are a bit of a New York City Subway nerd, of which I am as well.

Hi Everyone, As you may know, I have been around here for a while now, but have never been very active, and introducing myself will make me feel better about posting. My name is Spencer, and I live in the Seattle area. I have ridden all of the WSF Ferries, about 1/3 of the BC Ferries, and while I've never actually ridden an Alaska ferry, I've toured a couple while in port. Guy and I are good friends, and we share pretty much the same interests: ferries, photography, and public transit. Also, we're around the same age. I have family that lives on Lummi Island, so I get to ride the Whatcom Chief quite often. I'll try to get better about posting photos of it, as I have A LOT. My other hobbies include: crabbing, driving small outboard motor boats, Boy Scouts, and computers. My favorite ferry is absolutely the Evergreen State! ~Spencer

Sir: I thank you for your prompt response and courteous welcome. I have already posted an update on the ferryboat LEHMAN and have a few other items in the works.
Best Wishes to all here.

When I am not riding the subways I'm usually haunting a pier somewhere. The growth of ferry services in New York had been remarkable. Thirty years ago we had three ferry routes and nine boats. Now we have about thirty routes and over sixty boats so there is always something to see. Thank you for your kind welcome. Larry, RedbirdR33

Hi all,
I was encouraged to join up here by Mr. Cassidy of Busshots, him figuring that I'd find a niche here in terms of naval arrivals in Vancouver and Seaspan Vancouver's modernization as part of the NSPS. Living in Calgary (though having lived in Vancouver for most of my life), I'm rather thirsty for information as to how the NSPS progress is coming along on both coasts, so I'm hoping some of you here can help with that!
I'm currently in the first year of my PhD program, specializing in naval conflict. My main hobby is ship modelling, as you can see in my avatar, and I'm a moderator on ModelWarships.com. I have a 1/350 Burrard Pacific Breeze in the works as part of my first scratchbuild, but it's currently suspended pending other, more pressing, projects. I'm also a big fan of mobile photography, and employ a Nokia 808 PureView as my shooter.
Cheers!

I look forward to your ongoing commentary of things related to Seaspan's shipyard, as the federal contracts slowly progress (we hope something happens) and your take on some of the local shipyard issues. For warship models, what era and what navies are you most interested in? What are some of your favourite ships? Cheers !

Thanks! Here's hoping we do get some things to comment on I don't have a particular limit on what I model, as long as the subject has an engine in it (though there's an Ottoman galley waiting to be built). I'm currently working on carrier HMS Hermes of the Falklands War in 1/700. After that it'll be either the Bismarck in the same scale or HMCS Calgary (the current FFH) in 1/350. I'm also planning on building a fleet of representative Ottoman steam navy vessels, which was encouraged by the four months I spent in Turkey during my undergrad for an exchange - somewhere down the line, I'll be building HMS Agincourt as though she had successfully commissioned into the Ottoman navy as Sultan Osman I.

I'm currently working on carrier HMS Hermes of the Falklands War in 1/700. The Falkland's Hermes always held a special place of interest for me. Probably because she was the last of the era of classic carriers in the Royal Navy, what with the new HMS Invincible as a "Through Deck Cruiser" instead of a classic carrier. Or at least that's my amateur analysis of that 1980s fleet.

You're not far off - Hermes was the last carrier in RN inventory before the Invincibles, though she had been refitted with the ski-jump for Harriers a few years before the Falklands.
Is there a section of the forum where models (both civil and military) are best posted?

Is there a section of the forum where models (both civil and military) are best posted? I think this would be the best thread. Up until now, it's been mainly drawings (hand drawn and computer generated). I think your style of physical models would be fine here. Models by Tim

It's a great time to like ferries in Washington State, with the newbuilds Tokitae and Samish (and the yet-to-be named 3rd Olympic class). A good time to see some turnover in the fleet. Were you able to ride any of the Steel Electrics, before they were gone?

In March 2007 I was able to ride on both a Steel Electric (the Quinault) as well as the Evergreen State--on the Edmonds-Kingston route. They were running a three-boat service on that route with Walla Walla. Riding on these ferries was totally by chance; I had no idea that those ferries would be on that route beforehand. (wasn't a big ferry geek back then) I rode the Evergreen last summer to really get a better memory of what it was like as well as take some photos and videos of the interior to preserve for future generations of ferry fans. I have done the same with the Klahowya, now I just need to ride the Hiyu while it's still in WSF service!

I Always ride the Edmonds-Kingston Route (Seattle-Winslow sometimes), but if I'm gonna ride some smaller ferries, i'm gonna have to ride a different run... I need to do this, as I missed riding the steel electrics and even the M/V Rhododendron!

Hi Austin, and welcome to the forum! You've come to the right place to talk about ferries! It's funny that the first ferry we both rode was the Spokane! Also, I think that means we now have three WA-State forum members around the age of the JMIIs. Ferrynerding is growing among young people... ps: to get fully initiated into this forum's membership, you need to comment on at least 1 ship of each of the 3 main systems on our west coast. I dare you.... (just kidding, but a "One Coast, Two Countries, Three Systems" awareness is encouraged here) So talking about the one coast, two countries, three systems, I was wondering if anybody has sailed on all three ferry systems. I know that FNS and WettCoast have, but have any other people done the same? It'd be interesting to look at statistics for that (ie. those who have sailed on all three systems, two or only one of them)

Hi all. My name is Phil and I have always been captivated by our ferries here in Washington State since I was about knee-high. I think the first ferry I rode on was the Walla Walla (this might explain why she was and will always remain my favorite WSF). My favorite super class ferry is the Hyak, since my brother and I actually got to drive her for about 15 minutes when he was about 12 and I was 8 (under the watchful eye of the captain, of course! ). When I was in third grade, I got a tour of the Spokane, during which I got to blow her horn as she was leaving Bainbridge Island and again as she was arriving in Seattle. I have ridden almost all of our vessels except the Salish, Kennewick and the Hiyu. I have also ridden on the Coho. Unfortunately, I have not ridden on the BC Ferries. My other favorite things are fishing, airplanes, baseball, football, printers (when they work) and computers. -Phil (siegfriedphilip)
