Hello. I’ve already done some posts in this forum, but thought I would introduce myself.
My name is Alex. I am 23 and live in Victoria. As a kid I would frequently take the Skeena Queen to visit my grandma on Salt Spring. My hobby in the recent couple of years has been to take my bike on the ferry and explore the gulf islands and other places in BC. My goal is to cycle onto every ferry in BC ferries fleet (or at least get close). So far I have biked on the following ferries:
Mayne Queen Queen of Cumberland Skeena Queen Klitsa Quinsam Bowen Queen Queen of Oak Bay Queen of Capilano Island Kwigwis Salish Heron
Looking forward to sharing and learning more in this forum!

Hi all, I'm new to this forum. Love living on the west coast and have been on ferries regularly since I moved to the southern gulf islands. My son Ollie told me to join this forum. Been riding BC ferries since I was a teenager.
My favourite ferries are:
Queen of Nanaimo Mayne Queen Spirit of British Columbia Spirit or Vancouver Island Malaspina Sky Powell River Queen Bowen Queen
I have to say, I'm not crazy about the Salish class. Hate the slopping deck.
I'm not sure what I can do to contribute to this forum but will try to do my best. Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum, and Happy New Year. I'm not crazy about the Salish class either. Visually, I think they're ridiculously tall. I don't think they were built with future needs in mind, given that the main route nine vessel is smaller than the Queen of Nanaimo. The lineup for food in the mornings is really long. The lounge is... meh... just really generic. On the positive side, the outdoor spaces are really good, with a fair bit of space always protected from the wind. The problem with the car deck is not so much the incline, but the time needed to open and close the hatch; really impractical on a multi island run. A single large deck would be preferable, but maybe a smaller hull was more economical to build. I don't think these are boats for ferry fans. I think they're just efficient transportation. Us fans are losing out with fleet standardization... but, admittedly, we're not who the system is built for.

On a busy route it winds all the way down the passageway and clogs it up so people have to squeeze by. The problem with the slopping deck is that it's not covered: You bake in the summer and freeze in the winter. If you have mobility issues it's hard to get into your car. I definitely still prefer the Queen of Nanaimo. It might be old but it was comfortable, roomy, reliable and looks a heck nicer than the Salish class. Perhaps one day we can build our own ferries in BC like the old days.

I wish I had the chance to go on the Queen of Nanaimo, but I only become a real ferry fan this summer. It's too bad the modern ships are so bland on the inside, most just have no personality. I went on the Queen of New Westminster for the first time a few months back and it was so nice, it felt so much more comfortable than the coastal/spirit class vessels. I hope the next batch of ships can have a little more personality to them!

Welcome aboard! If anyone wants a taste of what BC Ferries and their ships used to be like, indulge yourself with a trip on the Coho. Happy new year to all!
