This thread is for you to suggest your ideas on the next lineup of nerd-candy.
This would be the decision on which ship will be the "ship o' the month" for each month between July 2007 and June 2008.
This gives you lots of time to think these issues through, and for this thread to grow and sway the minds of the undecided.
Sometime closer to July 2007, us moderators will conference to discuss how the actual ship selection will be made. There are as many possibilities for the selection process as there are possibilties for the ships themselves. So the mob-method won't necessarily work. And the decision is guaranteed to leave some folks disappointed; so don't take it too seriously. Be warned that some of us moderators (well at least one of the moderators) enjoys messing with the keeners' minds.
So have fun, and for these calendar-girls, you are encouraged to think outside the box.

I would like...
(I would like a trip to Europe!)
I would like to see the OLD Kahloke/Langdale Queen, preferably in Black Ball colors if it can be managed.

I know this was originally a BCF forum but sometime after the WSF trip, can we have a pic of a WSF?

How about July we do a best of the best or better yet, plan the WSF trip in July and have a WSF pic , or we can just have a freestyle for July. September will be hard cause you cannot just choose one pic from the net. Unless Mr. stapleton lets us use his pic if he goes over there. January on I'd like to change too.

Here's some ideas....just ideas:
I think there's room in the 12 months to include some non-BC ships, such as an AMHS vessel which might sail through BC waters.
Also a WSF or Euro ship.
Also some historical ships of yester-year.
Lots of possibilities........and we've got lots of time to think them all through.

Hey Ferry-Chaser-Man, don't be greedy... share! ;D Besides, there's always the angle that maybe we shouldn't repeat any that we've done this year, until we've worked through rather more of the fleet. Otherwise it's going to be one huge Alberni-fest.

Is the Queen of the North going to be the ship of choice every March? I'm not objecting, just asking...
(reviews list again)
...sheesh. Just one of the original six, that's all I'm asking...

So, what is included in the "Original Six" ? To reiterate, the choice of the 2007-08 monthly ships is long off still, so there's no reason for dispair. Just because someone posts a list of 12 ships now, doesn't mean that those will be the ships. I'd rather see a few ships (or types of ships) suggested now, along with reasons why, instead of a full calendar list of 12 ships. It's easier to discuss & think about the ship choices when they aren't presented in a full-list that makes you think they are cast in stone.

Ooops. I keep adding a sixth boat when Peabody only started out with five. *blush* Queen of Richmond, anyone? (Peabody kept five boats out of the sale to WSF but the Malahat never went north. Number six, the Smokwa, was added later.)
The original five: Chinook II (Sechelt Queen), Quillayute, Bainbridge (Jervis Queen), Kahloke (Langdale Queen), and Smokwa. These are the vessels that comprised the foundation of BC Ferries, and periodically on this board I feel like their existence is largely ignored. I know that really isn't the case, of course, but... anyway, I'd like to see one boat take a turn as the flagship--preferably the Langdale Queen (though if someone can find a good photo as the Kahloke, in Black Ball colors, I wouldn't balk ;D) because she was the oldest and, at 101 or 102 years old when the hull was finally cut up, I daresay she will hold the "longest life" record for some time to come.

...Number six, the Smokwa, was added later.) My dad has a particular connection to the Smokwa. Working for the CBC on the Beachcombers show in Gibsons in the 70s he sailed aboard the venerable Langdale Queen to and from Horseshoe Bay where the Smokwa had sailed only a few years earlier. His most interesting connection to the Smokwa, though, comes from his days growing up in Halifax, Nova Scotia; I've shown him pictures of the little steam ferry, and he's confirmed to me that he did in fact see and sail aboard her during her brief career there before a bridge made the ferries redundant and allowed her to be sold to Peabody's Black Ball Line.

If the photos are from when Black Ball operated from the actual Gibson's Landing then they would be rare photos indeed; if they're from after 1955, however, while still as valued, the photos would have been taken from the Black Ball terminal at Langdale, near Gibsons. I think it would be nice to have one or two months to historical ferries/ships - maybe one that operated pre-BC Ferries including or not including the Princess Ships (which could be another month, but I don't know if we have much selection for those).
There are only two seabuses, but we could have a month for the best "passenger" ferry, which could include any of the high-speed passenger ferries or little harbour ferries (Vancouver and Victoria).
Here's another idea - ferry terminals. It's not so easy to get a pretty terminal shot, but it could work.
There could also be weather specific photos. A ferry snow picture for a winter month, a storm photo for a fall month.

What I could do is get a list of 20 or 30 options, then put them into a free online survey and get everyone to rate between 1-5 which ferries/ideas they would like for the coming year. Then I'd just take the top 12 rated ideas and try and match them up with the months. That's the only way I can think of making this descision democratic:) I'd do it on this forum, but we're pretty limited with what we can do with the forum polls.

Just another idea.... What would people think if we had a "BC" Ferry for one of the months? MOTH ie: Needles, Galena, Balfour, Harrop. Just an idea ;D

I agree with that idea.
I think it's too tough to try find some sort of meaningful reason for a ship for a particular month.....except for something like Q-North for March.
So I think it makes sense to just pick 12 ships/things, and randomly allocate them to the 12 months of the year.
Otherwise it just gets too silly.........

Here's some possibilities:
- current BC Ferries ships - historical BC Ferries ships - Ministry of Highways ships (current/past) - WSF ships - Historical pre-BC-Ferries pre-WSF ships (ie. Puget Sound, Black Ball, etc). - CP & Union Steamships ships - Terminals

Well, if we're looking for a WSF ship with a BC tie-in, may I respectfully submit the Evergreen State,, grande dame of the San Juan fleet from 1959 to 2000 and #1 Sidney boat for most of same?

Okay, my 2-cents worth...
Go with BCF's vessels for 8 moths of the year, then others for the remaining 4 months. Literally anything goes except that each ship featured has to have a BC connection. (This is, after all, the Ferries of BC Forum...) As an example one month could feature a WSF or AMHS vessel but the shot should be taken in BC waters, or the vessel should at least be one that has regularly been seen of in BC waters now, or in the past. For the Northern Adventure - Sonia, we could have a photo of it operating in Caribbean waters, or the Spanish Mediterranean.
We need to also consider photo sources. There is a desire to have some pre BCF's Blackball stuff. Unfortunately even the old timers among us have few if any pictures from that time that are our own. We have to borrow them from other sources, and I think that is fine providing there are no copyright infringements.
Lastly, I believe that at least one month each year should be set aside to celebrate our pre 1960 coastal steamer heritage of CP's BCCS, Union Steamships, etc.

I think we should be allowed to have one WSF a year IMO. Not just all BC due to we have a community in Washington State to cater to.

And what about those of us who aren't able to ride the BC ferries with the regularity some of you enjoy . I would suggest a month for an "other North American Ferry", and one for "World Ferry" (I guess I could concede to one month split between both ). I also like the idea of devoting one month to a historical BC Ferry as suggested previously, and possibly a month devoted to historical BC passenger services (again, okay, maybe one month for both...greedy BC Ferries picture takers ) The idea of one or two months dedicated to "other ferry services" in BC waters as Wet Coast Kid suggested is great...this would allow coverage of all the other ferries in BC, as well as allow for a couple of more chances for the WSF and AMHS ships to appear. This would make it: BCF - 7 WSF - 1 Other ferry services outside BC and WA - 1 Historical ferries and ships in BC waters - 1 Other ferry services traversing BC waters - 2 To quote Wet Coast Kid: my 2-cents worth...
