I for one really appreciate the monthly flagship voting. I'm surprised that more users aren't participating in the vote. The photos are always excellent no matter the quantity available and picking favorites is difficult but fun. I did miss out on May's vote because I didn't happen to log on in time so maybe a bit of an extension to the voting period would help spur on more participation on the voting end of things.

I think to get more people to do put more photos in is we allow different people to win different like the people who winers from last month cannot enter this month flagship contest. Maybe allow other people do flagship contest every couple of months, also do repeats of good old flagship contests.

Response to your suggestions: 1) Excluding previous winners: I foresee this accomplishing the exact opposite of what we wish to do. We want to encourage all members to participate, even if they are previous winners. We do have a rule regarding previous winning flagship entries, but that is to encourage variety. 2) Voyager's Choice: Stay tuned. 3) Repeating themes: This is something we have to do already. There are only so many themes we can do over the seven (?) years we have been doing this.

What would it take to revive the flagship photo contest?
An infusion of active members. There isn't that much activity on the board anymore, and a lot of our long-timers have wandered off. I've wandered off a fair bit myself, and largely stay on the southern half of the board because it's where my (waning) interest lies.
I don't participate much in the photo contest because if it's a BC-themed subject I'm less interested to start with, and as a result I'm not well-prepared to submit anything (i.e., I got nothin'). When I do join the BC fray, it's something from the Black Ball era that tends not to be of interest.
But on a practical level, we've discussed before that there is truly a limit to innovation when it comes to taking new and different photos of boats.
Maybe it's just run its course.

3) Repeating themes: This is something we have to do already. There are only so many themes we can do over the seven (?) years we have been doing this. There still hasn't been a "Photos from Howe Sound" month. Anyways, I agree with westernflyer here. Additionally we could have some non-ferry themes to change things up a little. There is a whole litany of topics buried under "Other Forms of Transportation." Many people have great photos of Cruise Ships, which opens up a good amount of possible topics. This would still keep with the maritime tradition of this forum. Also, since there are six moderators and one administrator, simple math tells us that there could be five voyager's/member's choice months, if everyone is ok with one turn a year. However, February is always "Your Favourite Photos" of the previous year so it could easily be cut to four.

There still hasn't been a "Photos from Howe Sound" month. I think the stuck-out-tongue emoticon serves to delay it for a few more months.

One idea I have for the flagship is "Old and New"; a picture of two ferries, one no more than 10 years old and one at least 35 years old.
Some examples of combinations that would work;
Samish&Yakima Klahowya&Samish Tokitae&Kittitas Queen of New Westminister&Coastal Celebration Queen of Alberni&Coastal Inspiration Malispina&Fairweather

Some more suggestions I have;
>The Oldest Ship; Any picture of the NIP (BCF's Oldest Ferry), The Evergreen (WSF's Oldest Ferry), or the Malispina (AMHS' oldest ship)
>Eye of the Storm; A picture of a ferry in choppy seas or pouring rain, that sort of thing...
>Sisters Together; A picture of two ferries in the same class together
>The More the Merrier; A picture of at least 3 different ferries
>The Beautiful Islands; Any picture of a ferry in the San Juan Islands (Doesn't necessarily have to be a WSF, Both Guemes and Lummi are part of the San Juans, either of those two boats would be eligible, as would any ferry that sails in the Islands.)
>Your Favorite Pictures; No real theme; just having a flagship where members can submit their favorite ferry pictures in their collection.
These are my ideas for Great Flagships.

These are my ideas for Great Flagships. A number of these suggestions have been used in the past. They could however be used again if the last time we did such was say three years ago. I do like the 'More the Merrier' suggestion and I don't think that we have ever done that.

I like "more the merrier." This would probably end up with a lot of Active Pass and Orcas Island as well as some terminals.

Here are four new ideas I thought of.
>In Memory of...; any picture of a ferry no longer in service
>Twilight of their career; A picture of any ferry with no more than three years until it's planned retirement date
>The Outsider; a picture of at least two ferries, one or more on their typical route, and one that's not (For Example, the Kitsap&Yakima in the San Juans)
>The Big Boats; Open to interpretation, but I was thinking any picture of one of the five largest ferries in either WSF or BCF.

Mr. Horn has already picked the theme for the August-September flagship, and it's a good one, but I would like to take this time to announce that the theme for the October-November flagship will be taken from this thread, what we are calling the "Suggestion Box." We will pick what we deem to be the best theme idea from this thread, and do that for the October-November banner. So, this is a chance for all of you Forum Members to submit your ideas for what you want to do as a theme, and possibly get your idea chosen. For the theme we choose, we will give proper credit to the individual who submitted the idea. I thought I would bring this up now to get everyone thinking about it, and time to submit your ideas. The October-November flagship theme will be chosen sometime in early August.

My suggestion (as if I haven't made enough of them already...) I was thinking we should do a flagship of ships that have been retired recently. (the definition of recently could be open to interpretation, but I was thinking any ship lost/retired on or after March 22, 2006.) ===== also, any of my previous suggestions are fair game...

I know I have probably already exceeded my suggestion limit, but here is one more idea. It's a crazy idea that just might work... I was looking at this thread, and it got me thinking. What if we voted on our favorite ferry, and then did a flagship featuring whichever boat(s) come out on top? The WCFF's Favorite Ferry... =====

New theme idea - ferries and landmarks! That's actually a pretty good theme idea. We'll keep it in mind for future flagships. Places that come to mind: > Seattle: WSF ferries with the Space Needle in the background (kind of an obvious choice) > Victoria: Coho or Clipper with BC's Parliament buildings, or Empress Hotel > Vancouver: any ferry sailing under Lion's Gate Bridge - this one's an interesting choice because that could be a BC Ferry or Washington State Ferry (i.e. MV Wenatchee) > New York: a Staten Island ferry with either the lower Manhattan skyline, including World Trade Center, or a shot with the ferry and Statue of Liberty I'm sure there are others out there, but thanks for suggesting this theme.

Our forum flagship theme for display during months of OCT-NOV 2017: Voyager's Choice If you enjoy participating in flagship nominations and if you have an idea that you'd like to see as the theme for our current round of nominations, please share your idea here. No point in jumping to a poll, unless we know if there are some ideas here that we can get consensus on quickly and simply. So, if you have a passion for the flagships, and if you can think through the criteria so that it's workable and understandable for us to use, please share your idea. Those who speak-up soon will be heard, and will get their way (as long as it's workable and appropriate for this forum). (this attempt at running a simple process is courtesy of my laid-back summer vibe)

I think we should do a B-Class theme: Those were two terrific boats that will be missed by many. A flagship to honor those venerable Queens may be a nice sendoff for them...
