We need to also consider photo sources. There is a desire to have some pre BCF's Blackball stuff. Unfortunately even the old timers among us have few if any pictures from that time that are our own. We have to borrow them from other sources, and I think that is fine providing there are no copyright infringements. Lastly, I believe that at least one month each year should be set aside to celebrate our pre 1960 coastal steamer heritage of CP's BCCS, Union Steamships, etc. Well, at least down here in the States, I believe there's a copyright exemption for usage in a non-profit, educational situation. But I could be wrong. And I love the idea of the BCSS/Union steamer... periodically I feel like few members around here are aware that BCF and its predecessors date back well before 1980.

Speaking of steamers, I was at Port Alberni today, and I stopped by the Lady Rose office, by the Alberni Harbour Quay.
They have a restored "Bamfield lifeboat" on display, as well as an outside wall mural of the Valencia.
I picked up a brochure on the Lady Rose / Frances Barkley ships, as I intend to ride one of them this spring.

Okay Here's My Insight Using the same list as Chris. Bold Text is Modifyed July: Queen of Vancouver /Esquimalt (...never been acknowledged before...)
August: North Island Princess (Largest forum member sailing aboard this ship in August 06)
September: Spirit of Vancouver Island (Collision with Pleasure Craft in 2000)...
Or...September: Queen of Nanaimo/New Westminster (Interior Upgrade)...
Or...September: Kuper (Bought from the State of Utah)
October: Non-BC Ferry Month (Post a Picture of a Non-BC Ferry)
November: Queen of Burnaby - Replaced Queen of Sidney around about this time in 2000
December: Northern Adventure
January: Quinsam Or Kuper (Both had Big Milestones)
February: Nimpkish! ( Was initially sent up North temporarily, but is now stuck up there until further notice...)
March: Either a Non BC Ferry Month or the Queen of the North (QotN Is the Ship for March 2007 Don't forget)
April: Queen of Chilliwack
May: Coastal Class Ship (Around the Time the Coastal Celebration Arrives Completing the Coastal Class)
[EDIT]June: Queen of Oak Bay (Pleasure Boat Collision because of one Cotter Pin June 30th)[EDIT]I thought it might be a good idea to bring this back up. So, Do We Agree With these suggestions?

my thoughts are not to have a set out schedule, but to instead have a quota of various areas/eras/fleets of ships to allocate amongst the 12 months. So please resist the temptation to layout a 12 month list. I'm not too big on having a particular month for a ship....except for something obvious like March 2007 to honour the 1 year anniversary of QueenNorth's sinking. Other than that, most any type/fleet of ship can be for any month. And yes, you can expect to see some Washington-State and Alaska ferries featured.....so for those who are distracted by such global realities, you may want to secure your vallium supply soon.

July 2007 is coming up soon. Nominations will start on June 1st....and I'll start a new thread for this, by the end of May.
But for those who like to plan ahead: ------------------------------------------------------ For this first month of the Flugian-Calendar, let's choose a picture of a private-company ferry, that is a ship that is retired; and that was sailing in BC prior to the start of BC Ferries.
ie. - Blackball - Sparky's - Gulf Islands - CP - Etc.
This should be one of those categories where there are numerous possibilities.
Please give feedback on whether this should be limited to company livery/era, or if a ship such as Kahloke could be included in her "Langdale Queen" incarnation. Do we have an adequate supply of pre-BC-Ferries pictures of ships such as Chinook-II, Kahloke, Smokwa, Princess of Vancouver, etc?
-------------------------------- ps (for those of you who can't get enough Vitamin-V or Vitamin-C....fret not, as you might still get your Alberni or Saanich sometime this year too.....)

I have a black and white shot of the Kahloke (or is it Langdale Queen?) that I've never ascertained which incarnation it is (it's head-on, in the dock, at HSB).
Or for that matter, a lovely color shot of the Chinook II at HSB in 1957. ;D
Anyway, I move that there be no powder blue in contention for this month only.

Man! I forgot about my picture of the Brentwood, though it's a little blurry... anyway, I have contenders. Which ought to make up for my complete inaction in the WSF month. *blush*

How about a month or two for ferry terminals, as opposed to a particular ferry, or class of ferries.

Post by Mike C on May 31, 2007 13:42:16 GMT -8
hmm... a particular 'region' of ferry terminals i.e. Sunshine Coast?

I like the idea of ferry terminals too. I don't know if we need to limit it to a region, but maybe a limit of 1 or 2 entries per member would keep the number of photos down to a managable amount and force us to be creative:)

We are going to change how we determine the "Category" for the month's flagship.
Instead of the old-way of choosing a 12-month cycle of ideas ahead of time, we're moving to a more flexible method.
Starting with the July07 banner-month, 1 moderator will choose the category/theme/criteria for that month's banner-flagship. We will rotate amongst the Moderators from month to month re this.
ie. When it's San Mateo's turn, he can pick a theme of interest to his areas of the forum, or whatever he thinks needs some representation. When Jordan has his turn, he picks an area that he thinks needs representation.
Don't worry, it won't be endless C-Class.....the variety of the moderators will help to ensure variety in the monthly themes.
So, this thread here can be used for you to discuss/submit ideas for upcoming themes.....that the Moderators can take into consideration. A great example of this is the idea of having "Ferry Terminals" as a theme.
Have fun with this.
Next month for nominations is for the July-07 banner-month, and that "Theme" has already been announced in a separate thread on this page.

Here's some info re upcoming month's themes.
September 07: Queen of Esquimalt, and the pic is being voted on right now....
October 2007: San Mateo's choice.
November 2007: Retro's choice.
(October & November above refer to the Moderator who will be choosing that month's theme and criteria. Look for their threads announcing this info, in the coming days / weeks).

For the next time that it's my turn to pick the month's criteria (which won't be anytime soon), I have a different idea......and I'd like some feedback.
I've been consistently gratefully impressed with the historic ferry photographs that Wet Coast Kid has posted from his brother's collection.
How about a month where all the nominations are from the D.O.T. collection??
ie. that means that only Wet Coast Kid would submit the pics, but that we'd be choosing from what we all agree is a most incredible historical collection of photographs.
Would we be willing to sacrifice a month of nominating our own pics, in order to devote an entire ballot to this man's awesomely respected collection?
(and have I exceeded the adjective-quota yet??)

Flugel, because I love competition so much. I am going to have to say NO! (no offense to you Jim I love your pics but I love competition) I'll remind you that this is not a competition between members, but just between the actual photos. I actually think Fluge's idea is a good one. It's something different.

Chances are, I wouldn't win anyway. So I would support having a D.O.T. photo selection.

I too am greatful for all of DOT's efforts over the years, let alone greatly inspired and influenced by them, and would be all too happy to have a number of his classic photographs to choose from for the banner. You've got my vote.

In support of this idea I have started to put together an album on my 'photobucket' site. More pitures will be added over the coming days and weeks. One picture from that album is my current 'sig'. IMPORTANT NOTICE RE BANNER DIMENSIONS:
- Starting with the November 2007 Flagship Contest, the Banner Dimensions will change to 800 wide x 200 tall.
This is a 4-to-1 aspect ratio.
The intention of this is to make it easier to fit your various "normal" photographs into the restrictive banner-dimensions. ie. less valuable scenery is lost in the cropping....

You got these two labeled and they sure dont look like the saanich unless she had windows before hand after her lift It is indeed the 'Saanich actually. All 4 V's were given Deck 3 car deck windows, aka portholes on lower car deck, prior to lifting. In the early to mid 90's, the Esquimalt and Saanich had them covered up. Why? I am not sure. A ferry geek speculated idea would be that BCF wanted to have visual differences between the two sets of V's that were built. Ok, that theory is unrealistic I'll admit, but until someone proves me otherwise....my theory will stand .
