How about the Coastal Celebration for December 2008's flagship?

Hey there DENelson83, why not?, works for me. The arrival of the 'Coastals' have ushered in a new era of ships at BCF and this year we been fortunate to see this era unfold, month by month, from their arrival, open houses, crew training, inaugural sailings so why not top this great year of 2008 with the last, newest and hopefully least 'bug-plagued' Coastal. Let's sail out of 2008 on the Coastal Celebration!

I hope this is the proper thread for raising this suggestion so here it is. How do all you folks feel about starting January 2009 we salute the Queen of Prince Rupert as Flagship of the month? All indications are that by Summer 2009 the QPR will be relegated to the 'history' pages of BC Ferries. I will reveal within the next 2 or 3 months a large QPR 'project' that I will be looking for some input on and maybe more. This ship is extremely special to me and I believe the same feelings are shared by many of those who have sailed on her and the thousands of coastal British Columbians she has so faithfully served for 48 years. Come to think of it, one could almost call this fine ship, "The Last Queen to 'Rupert' and Beyond".

It's a good suggestion if you ask me. The Flagship for January 2009 will be organized by SS San Mateo but I'm pretty sure he'd be pretty open to that suggestion.

I have been looking back at our flagship photos over the last two plus years, and two things stand out: - We have had a lot of really great photos submitted, and up as the header of the month
- To date a Spirit vessel has yet to appear as our flagship. Maybe soon we will rectify that.

The Flagship for January 2009 will be organized by SS San MateoJust a thought, but since some consider January to be a time of "new beginnings," Maybe the flagship topic can involve the beginnings of our ferry systems. Either first ships, or launchings of ships, or even the latest and greatest ships in the fleet. I am also still a fan of interior views. ~LeC

In case you're wanting to do some lobbying on flagship ideas, here's the schedule of moderators assigned to upcoming months' flagships: ================

March 2009 - Queen of the North
April 2009 - Karl
May 2009 - Scott
June 2009 - Flugel Horn
July 2009 - John H.
August 2009 - Coastal Skier
September 2009 - S.S. San Mateo

March 2009 - Queen of the North I know this is the default, but I have a feeling we should tone down the Queen of the North banner a little bit. E.G. we could use the WCF Banner (The one above the Flagship Banner) similar to how it was changed for the holidays except with a silhouette of the Queen of the North with Queen of the North 1969-2006 next to it. Just a suggestion though...

I'm with Ship-Rider 16 on this one. I realize that the Queen of the North shouldn't be forgotten, but I'm pretty sure there's other things that happened in March that are worthy of commemorating.

I like Cadmunkey's idea. It's abstract and different.
This has been voiced a few times in this thread in the past, but I don't think we've ever seen this as a flagship.
What about a photo of a pre-BCF coastal steamer? I'm thinking photos of Union Steamships, BCCSS (CPR), or CNR's Princes.
There's a photo in Robert Turner's book "Those Beautiful Coastal Liners" of the Princess Kathleen passing under a snowy peak while on her Alaska run that I would love to see as a forum flagship. I know there may be some copyright issues with that particular photo, but that's what I'm thinking of.

There are countless subjects that could be featured as upcoming months' flagships without re-visiting the Queen of the North. Let's turn the page on that sad saga.

Perhaps, since it isn't our aim to resell or redistribute the image, or make money from doing so, it might be allowable to post such a picture as long as it is properly attributed to the original photographer.

re the March 'North tradition, thanks to those who've spoken up re the perpetuity idea.
For those who like the "Queen of the North" March-tribute tradition, now is the time to speak up, as so far consensus is indicating that March should be a regular moderator-rotation month for flagships.

I'll add to my opinion on the subject--nothing says we can't do a banner specifically for March 22.

In my opinion it would be quite okay to give the North a rest this March. How about we make a point of remembering her passing in March of 2011, 5 years after the loss of that fine ship.
In its place, we could use the month of March to remember ships that are gone, such as the steamers, or early BC & WSF ferries, vessels that have been gone for say 20 years or more. Examples: the Queen of the Islands, the Princess of Vancouver, the Suzie Q, the Anscomb....

I fully agree with this idea too, but what to have in march now...
I'd go for a Spirit or WCK's passing ships. Perhaps a minor terminals? Has this been done, I know we did major terminals a little while back and there were some good entries of minor terminals.

We have yet to have a Spirit as our flagship. While many members have voiced their opinion that they are boring ships to be on, not many have denied that they are good looking ships. I think it may be time to showcase the biggest ships in the fleet.
If it's not too much effort on the moderators' part, I like the idea of a March 22nd memorial flagship for the QotN.

Alright, I'll speak up and say a few things in regard to the March flagship. First of all, I think it would be appropriate to change the header on March 22nd to a photo of the Queen of the North. How we decide on choosing a photo should be discussed, however (i.e. do we have an entire vote just for that one day?) Secondly, I like the way you think Nick, I think the Spirits (even though they have in fact appeared on the header in the past) deserve their own month, despite much controversy that I'm almost positive will develop as a result. "Why are we doing these big ugly boring ships? Why not the V's?" etc. etc. Reading all the other suggestions, I think they're all great, no complaints, but we may have to push them to the summer. But again, love them all, and keep up the good work!

Although I have made a minimal amount of posts to the forum, I have spent many many hours reading the huge amount of information and opinions. In doing so I have discovered that there are many very talented photographers who probably have some amazing pictures of two of the most prominent vessels in the fleet, the Spirit sisters. And, I agree with Nick and NewFlyer that having them as the flagship who be very cool.
I also think that it would be interesting to see a picture (if anyone has one) of the two Spirits docked at TSA, because it is not very often that you see both of them stopped in the same place at the same time.

Some ideas I have (a few probably have been suggested already) (theme titles in parentheses): - Spaulding designed vessels (Art Of Spaulding)
- Vessel interiors (Inner Beauty)
- Vessels under construction/undergoing MLU or other major upgrade (Ferry (Re)Birth)
- [Vessels in use after retirement (The Afterlife) - this would be restricted to pictures that show how the vessel was used after retirement and not showing the vessel in decrepid condition
