This probably isn't the right place to post this message, but I want to thank everyone who voted for my pic of the Illahee for the February Flagship Forum banner. I was actually surprised at how popular this one turned out to be. going into this, I was certain one of the historical pictures would have been chosen, and sort of figured #8 (the Quinault in Black Ball colours submitted by evergreenfleet) would be the one to beat, so I'm honoured that my picture made it. It will be fun to see what Queen of the North submissions people present for the March Flagship Forum.

I'd like to state a rule since this is the QotN's 2nd Time as Flagship. I'd Like it if The Image That Won the Flagship Last Year (Pictured Below) Not Be Eligible So Another Image Can Be Used. Mods, Your Thoughts?

I believe that that is the right thing to do, also. My question is 'are other entries from last year that did not 'win' eligible this time around'? Or should we be asking for other photos or post cards that were not used last time?
Perhaps we should be choosing an image from when this vessel sailed under the name Queen of the North?

I would fully agree that images that did not win could be eligable again and see if they win.

Would it be possible to allow drawings this time around? whidbeyislandguy has a couple and I faintly recall seeing another drawing posted on this board a long time ago.

My first entry for this month is a DOT shot taken on Howe Sound in 1975 when the North was known as the Surrey... This picture was not entered last time around. Full-size is here. Second entry, one of my photos, this time... This picture was also not entered last time around. Full-size is here. Third and final entry, again one of my photos, and this one was in the running last year but I have reworked it to fit into the 1x4 aspect ratio... Full-size is here.

Mods, Your Thoughts? I've always felt this to be a great banner to honour our fallen Flagship, though have always been irked by the red tinge. As such I've made up this banner, atleast in a format that fits this forum thread, though I'll happily either expand it to appropriate size or submit my own if concensus isn't had.

This photo of the Queen of Surrey in Howe Sound was taken in February 1976 on slide film and was an underexposure, making the shot a little more dramatic. It tied for first place in the first annual BC Ferries photo contest. Full size here: i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj178/Jimpilch/Ferries/Banner/QON4Crop.jpgEdited to replace oversize pic with the resized one

Well, I just went through this last month for the first time, so I can help you out here. The first post in this thread tells you what the dimensions need to be (960 x 240 max). You also need to save a reduced version of your entry (800 x 200 max) to post directly to your thread as an IMG, so we can see directly what you are submitting without having to go to a link. You then provide a link to the full size image (960 x 240 max) you are submitting. You'll want to add text to your image that says "Ferries of British Columbia Forum", or something like that, plus any other text you want to add talking about the photo. Look at the examples already posted here for some ideas. I really like your Queen of Surrey pic in Howe Sound. I'm looking forward to seeing all of your entries

Jim Pilch:
Re the Johnstone Strait picture: Where did you take this photo from?
ie. dock at Sayward, Hardwicke Island, a passing ship?
"every picture has a story....."

Thanks ! ps: I've changed it to an ftp-link for this message here, but you'll want it as an IMG "display-size" (ie. less than 800px wide), so that it can be used in the nomination thread. ============ pps: did Dave Thorne tie you for first-place?

Sorry about that, should be OK now. No, I believe his name was James Watson, Engineering Superintendent at the time. His picture was of a propellor.

I believe I was working on a tug named the Dauntless II and we were waiting weather at Adam River with our log tow.

If you look at this picture, can you hear a drum, and someone calling out "Attack Speed"? My wife thought that the floating structure looked like a bunch of oars protruding from the ship. Sort of like the Roman galleys had, in Judah Ben Hur's day..... (resisted the joke of the command "Ramming speed", oops)

Actually, when Bill Vander Zalm was Premier, he floated a plan to cut holes in the lower sides of all the major ferries, and have welfare recipients use long paddles to row, just as that picture suggests; thereby saving fuel, and justifying the Province's welfare budget. BC Ferries management, being the non-privatized, unimaginative types that they were at the time, balked at the idea, so Bill came up with his second welfare strategy, "give 'em a shovel."

Sounds like an urban-ferry-legend, because we all know that Zalm's "pick up a shovel" comment came in the late '70's, long before he became Premier. (us ferry folks like to be picky & accurate....even about the satire. And by saying that, I'm being satirical). ;D Good one though, Neil. But it makes me wonder: Did the Zalm ever say or do anything significant or controversial about BC Ferries, during his 1986-91 term as Premier? (pardon the off-topic, but it's the weekend.... ;D)

(pardon the off-topic, but it's the weekend.... ;D) Oh, come on, Mr Horn; he may have said it in the '70s, but everyone knows it didn't become official Social Credit policy until after the Zalm was elected Preem. Of course that's what I meant. The Spirits were launched in '93 and '94- I suppose they may have been conceived on his watch. Couple of factoids, minor coincidences..... Extremely few female political leaders in this country; two of them, both from BC, suffered similar fates. Premier Rita Johnston, elected head of the SoCreds, crashed and burned as the Zalm's successor at the hands of Mike Harcourt, and Prime Minister Kim Campbell, annointed by the Tories following Ben Mulroney's dad, annihilated by Jean Chretien's Liberals. (This irrelevancy moderator sanctioned, as he says, due to the weekend.)
